ਸੰਧ੍ਯਾ ਭਈ ਬਿਭੀਖਨਾ ਬੋਲਤਿ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਗੁਮਾਯ ।

sandhayaa bhee bibheekhanaa bolat brind gumaay

A fearsome dusk ensued, and many jackals are howling.

ਪੰਚ ਬੀਰ ਗੁਰ ਤੀਰ ਤਬਿ ਤਿਨ ਕਵਿ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥੧॥

panch beer gur teer tab tin kav naam sunaae ||1||

Five warriors then approached the Guru, I [Kavi Santokh Singh] shall list their names. ||1||

ਦਯਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਰੁ ਧਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਮਾਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੀਜੋ ਬਰ ਬੀਰ ।

dayaa singh ar dharam singh jee maan singh teejo bar beer

Daya Singh, Dharam Singh, and the third the great warrior, Maan Singh;

ਸੰਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਪੰਚਮ ਤਿਨਹੁਂ ਬਿਠਾਯੋ ਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਧੀਰ ।

sangat singh sant singh pancham tinahun bitthaayo de kar dheer

The fourth, Sangat Singh, and the fifth, Sant Singh got seated by the Guru.

ਗੁਰਤਾ ਅਰਪਨਿ ਲਗੇ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਪੰਚ ਸਿੰਘ ਤਹਿਂ ਸੋਹਿਂ ਸ਼ਰੀਰ ।

gurataa arapan lage khaalase panch singh tahin sohin shareer

Guru Ji begin to bestow Guruship upon the Khalsa, as the five Singhs' bodies look splendorous.

ਪੰਚਹੁਂ ਮਹਿਂ ਨਿਤ ਵਰਤਤਿ ਮੈਂ ਹੌਂ ਪੰਚ ਮਿਲਹਿਂ ਸੇ ਪੀਰਨ ਪੀਰ ॥੨॥

panchahun mahin nit varatat main hauan panch milahin se peeran peer ||2||

Satguru Ji stated, "I shall only keep contact with you five; wherever you shall group, you will become the saints of saints. ||2||

ਗੁਰ ਘਰ ਕੀ ਮਿਰਜਾਦਾ ਪੰਚਹੁਂ ਪੰਚਹੁਂ ਪਾਹੁਲ ਪੂਰਬ ਪੀਨ ।

gur ghar kee mirajaadaa panchahun panchahun paahul poorab peen

This is the tradition of the Guru's abode, the five beloved ones were the first to drink the Pahul.

ਹੁਇ ਤਨਖਾਹੀਆ ਬਖਸ਼ਹਿਂ ਪੰਚਹੁਂ ਪਾਹੁਲ ਦੇਂ ਮਿਲਿ ਪੰਚ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ।

hue tanakhaaheea bakhashahin panchahun paahul den mil panch prabeen

If there exists a 'Tankhaiya,' the five shall forgive him and have him reobtain the Pahul.

ਲਖਹੁ ਪੰਚ ਕੀ ਬਡ ਬਡਿਆਈ ਪੰਚ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਸੋ ਨਿਫਲ ਨ ਚੀਨ ।

lakhahu panch kee badd baddiaaee panch karahin so nifal na cheen

Consider the great glory of the five beloved ones; whatever they shall do will always hold meaning.

ਭੋਜਨ ਛਾਦਨ ਪੰਚਨ ਅਰਪਹਿਂ ਅਰਜ਼ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਤਿਨ ਬਾਂਛਤਿ ਲੀਨ ॥੩॥

bhojan chhaadan panchan arapahin araz karahin tin baanchhat leen ||3||

The congregation shall offer food and vestments to the five, and have their wishes fulfilled upon supplication." ||3||

ਇਮ ਪਾਂਚਨ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਤੀਨ ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰਮਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨਿ ।

eim paanchan kee mahimaa keh kai teen prakramaa fir kar deen

In this way, Guru Ji praise the five Singhs and circumambulate them three times.

ਅਰਪੇ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਜਿਗਾ ਅਰੁ ਕਲਗ਼ੀ ਨਿਜ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਸਿਰ ਬੰਧਨਿ ਕੀਨਿ ।

arape shasatr jigaa ar kalagee nij kar te sir bandhan keen

Then the Guru gives his weapons to them and ties royal plumes upon their heads.

ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਗਾਤਰੇ ਤਬਿ ਪਹਿਰਾਏ ਕਟ ਕਸਾਇ ਕਰਿ ਬਿਲਮ ਬਿਹੀਨ ।

shasatr gaatare tab pahiraae katt kasaae kar bilam biheen

Guru Ji adorned weapons and baldrics upon them and tightened their waistbands.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਫਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਚੀਨ ॥੪॥

shree vaahiguroo jee kaa khaalasaa fate vaahiguroo jee kee cheen ||4||

Then Guru Ji acclaimed "Sri Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Sri Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh." ||4||

ਪੰਚਹੁਂ ਸਿੰਘਨਿ ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਹਿਂ ਰਾਵਰਿ ਚਰਨਨ ਅਰਪੇ ਸੀਸ ।

panchahun singhan haath jor kahin raavar charanan arape sees

The five Singhs fold their hands and say "We have bestowed our heads upon your feet;

ਹਮ ਜੈਸੇ ਤੁਮ ਕਹੁ ਜਨ ਲਾਖਹੁਂ ਹਮ ਕੋ ਤੁਮ ਏਕੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ਼ ।

ham jaise tum kahu jan laakhahun ham ko tum ekai jagadeesh

there are thousands like us upon this world, but for us you are the only world-master.

ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਰਾਮਚੰਦ ਜਿਮ ਕਾਨਨ ਕੀਸ ।

brind kripaal kripaa kar taare raamachand jim kaanan kees

The benevolent Guru has liberated many beings, like Ramachandra liberated the Vanaras.

ਜਿਮ ਤੁਮ ਬਡੇ ਬਡੀ ਬਡਿਆਈ ਕੌਨ ਸਕੈ ਲਖਿ ਸਭਿ ਗੁਨ ਧੀਸ਼ ॥੫॥

jim tum badde baddee baddiaaee kauan sakai lakh sabh gun dheesh ||5||

Akin to your greatness, your glory is great; none can understand, you are master of all virtues." ||5||

ਇਮ ਸੁਨਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਫੁਰਮਾਯਹੁ ਹਤਨ ਰਿਪੁਨ ਕੋ ਬਨਿ ਸਵਧਾਨ ।

eim sun shree mukh te furamaayahu hatan ripun ko ban savadhaan

Hearing this, Sri Guru Ji speak, "you must become alertful to kill off enemies.

ਤਰਕਸ਼ ਭਰੇ ਪਰੇ ਜੋ ਹੇਰਹੁ ਆਨੇ ਖੱਚਰ ਪਰ ਗਨ ਬਾਨ ।

tarakash bhare pare jo herahu aane khachar par gan baan

filled-up quivers and many arrows have been brought, having been carried by a mule.

ਬਰਖਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਚਾਰ ਹੂੰ ਓਰਨ ਮੁਰਚਾ ਬੰਦੀ ਮਹਿਂ ਤੁਰਕਾਨ ।

barakhaa karahu chaar hoon oran murachaa bandee mahin turakaan

In all four corners, shower a rain of arrows. The Turks who have sought refuge in the trenches;

ਲੇ ਲੇ ਆਡਿਨ ਟਿਕੇ ਬਡੇ ਬਰਿ ਜੇ ਦੀਖਤਿ ਸੇ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਹਾਨ ॥੬॥

le le aaddin ttike badde bar je deekhat se keejeh haan ||6||

whichever Turks you see arriving from there, finish them off immediately. ||6||

ਅਰੇ ਰਹੋ ਗਢ ਮਹਿਂ ਤੁਮ ਦੋਨਹੁਂ ਹਮ ਨਿਕਸਹਿਂ ਸਭਿ ਕੇ ਬਚ ਮਾਨਿ ।

are raho gadt mahin tum donahun ham nikasahin sabh ke bach maan

Two of you Singhs shall remain in the fort, we shall follow your command and depart from here.

ਤੀਨਹੁਂ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਗ ਰਹਿਂ ਹਮਰੇ ਦਯਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਇਕ ਬੁੱਧਿ ਮਹਾਨ ।

teenahun singh sang rahin hamare dayaa singh ik budh mahaan

Three Singhs shall remain alongside us; Daya Singh is very quick-witted.

ਇਨ ਕਰਨੇ ਹੈਂ ਕਾਰਜ ਕੇਤਿਕ ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਿਦੇਸ਼ਨਿ ਮਹਿਂ ਚਲਿ ਜਾਨ ।

ein karane hain kaaraj ketik desh bideshan mahin chal jaan

He shall perform many good deeds in the coming time, and travel many places abroad.

ਨੌਰੰਗ ਕੋ ਇਕ ਰੰਗ ਰਹੈ ਨਹਿਂ ਪਠਿ ਇਸ ਕੋ ਹਮ ਕਰਿ ਹੈਂ ਹਾਨ ॥੭॥

nauarang ko ik rang rahai nahin patth is ko ham kar hain haan ||7||

Now Aurangzeb's fame shall no longer last; sending [the Zafarnama] to him we shall destroy him. ||7||

ਮਾਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਡ ਬੀਰ ਧਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਇਮ ਕਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਉਰ ਆਨਦ ਧਾਰਿ ।

maan singh badd beer dharam singh im keh kar ur aanad dhaar

Maan Singh and Dharam Singh are both great warriors." Saying this the Guru embodies bliss in his heart.

ਦੂਰ ਦੂਰ ਲਗਿ ਜੰਗ ਪਰੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹੋਤਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਸੁਮਾਰ ।

door door lag jang pare mrit hot pukaar hazaar sumaar

From far and beyond, corpses lied everywhere and the shrieks of the wounded were uncountable.

ਕਈ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਨ ਕਈ ਤਲਾਵੇ ਫਿਰੈਂ ਚੁਗਿਰਦੇ ਧੌਂਸ ਧੁੰਕਾਰ ।

kee hazaaran kee talaave firain chugirade dhauans dhunkaar

Thousands of guards roamed around the encampments and wardrums resounded in all four corners.

ਕਈ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਹੇਲ ਕੋ ਉਮਡੇ ਜਥਾ ਚੰਦ ਉਡਗਨ ਪਰਵਾਰ ॥੮॥

kee hazaar hel ko umadde jathaa chand uddagan paravaar ||8||

Thousands had arrived to lay siege on the fort, as if thousands of stars had come to ambush the moon. ||8||

ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਉਦਤਿ ਨਿਸਾਕਰ ਖਿਰੀ ਚਾਂਦਨੀ ਚਹੁਂ ਦਿਸ਼ ਚਾਰੁ ।

andhakaar mahin udat nisaakar khiree chaandanee chahun dish chaar

Amidst the darkness the moon rose up, and the moonlight bloomed in all four corners.

ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਬਿਲੋਕਨ ਜਿਤ ਕਿਤ ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਫੈਲ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਜਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰ ।

karayo bilokan jit kit lashakar fail parayo jan paaraavaar

The army of the Turks had spread everywhere, appearing as dispersed as an ocean.

ਧੁਖਤਿ ਪਲੀਤੇ ਬੜਵਾ ਲਾਟਨ ਬਾਜੀ ਨੱਕ੍ਰ ਕਿ ਨੇਜੇ ਮਾਰ ।

dhukhat paleete barravaa laattan baajee nakr ki neje maar

In that ocean, fuses of guns were smouldering like the flames of Badava Agni.

ਗਿਰ ਮੈਨਾਕ ਦੁਰਗ ਸਮ ਲਖੀਯਤਿ ਇਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥੯॥

gir mainaak durag sam lakheeyat im satigur chahoon or nihaar ||9||

The horses appeared as if they were crocodiles, while spears appeared like snakes. ||9||

ਪੰਚਹੁਂ ਮਹਿਂ ਕਲਗ਼ੀ ਕਿਹ ਦੀਨਸਿ ਸੋ ਨਿਰਨੈ ਸੁਨੀਐ ਮਨ ਲਾਇ ।

panchahun mahin kalagee kih deenas so niranai suneeai man laae

The way they bestowed the plume to the five Singhs; listen to its explanation as well.

ਸੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਿਖ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਮਤਿ ਥਾਪ੍ਯੋ ਪੰਚਹੁਂ ਮਹਿਂ ਬਡਿਆਇ ।

sant singh khatree sikh shubh mat thaapayo panchahun mahin baddiaae

Guru Ji appointed superiority to the Khatri Sant Singh, who was a well-minded Sikh.

ਤਿਸ ਕੋ ਗੁਰਤਾ ਅਰਪਨ ਕੀਨਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਮਹਿਂ ਤਿਨ ਪਾਇ ।

tis ko gurataa arapan keenas pratham khaalase mahin tin paae

He was the first to have been bestowed with leadership within the Khalsa Panth.

ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੰਧਾਇ ਬਿਠਾਇ ਅਟਾਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਫਤੇ ਬੋਲੇ ਹਰਖਾਇ ॥੧੦॥

shasatr bandhaae bitthaae attaaree guroo fate bole harakhaae ||10||

Adorning him their own weapons, Guru Ji sat him down and uttered the Fateh. ||10||

ਕਿਤਿਕ ਕਹਤਿ ਸੰਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਬੰਗਸੀ ਬੰਗਸ ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਿਖੈ ਤੇ ਆਇ ।

kitik kehat sangat singh bangasee bangas desh bikhai te aae

Some say Sangat Singh, who was a Bangashi and had come from the Bangash region;

ਤਿਸ ਕੋ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਸਥਾਪਨ ਤਿਸ ਛਿਨ ਗੁਰਤਾ ਦਈ ਜਿਗਾ ਪਹਿਰਾਇ ।

tis ko karayo sathaapan tis chhin gurataa dee jigaa pahiraae

Guru Ji had instead bestowed leadership upon him by placing a plume on his head.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਸਿਖ ਦੋਨਹੁਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਤਿਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਕੋਊ ਥਪ੍ਯੋ ਬਨਾਇ ।

satigur ke sikh donahun guramukh tin mahin koaoo thapayo banaae

Both of the Satguru's Sikhs were Gurmukhs; one of whom was bestowed with leadership.

ਤਿਸ ਪਰ ਬਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੁਛ ਬਰਨਹੁਂ ਦੋਨਹੁਂ ਕੇ ਲਿਹੁ ਚਰਨ ਮਨਾਇ ॥੧੧॥

tis par baad naheen kuchh baranahun donahun ke lihu charan manaae ||11||

I [Kavi Santokh Singh] do not intend to spark controvery on this; both Sikhs' lotus-feet shall be commemorated. ||11||

ਸੁਨਹੁਂ ਕਥਾ ਆਗੇ ਜਿਮ ਬਰਤੀ ਚਹੁੰਦਿਸ਼ਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਦੁੰਦਭਿ ਸਮੁਦਾਇ ।

sunahun kathaa aage jim baratee chahundish dhun dundabh samudaae

Now listen to the account of what ensued; the sound of wardrums echoed everywhere.

ਕਿਤ ਦਿਸ਼ਿ ਚਾਹਤਿ ਹੇਲ ਘਾਲਿਬੇ ਕਿਤ ਦਿਸ਼ ਮੁਰਚੇ ਕੋ ਨਿਕਟਾਇ ।

kit dish chaahat hel ghaalibe kit dish murache ko nikattaae

At some places they prepare for attack, and at other places enemies approach the trenches.

ਕੂਕ ਪੁਕਾਰੈਂ ਕੇਤਿਕ ਦੌਰੇ ਹਲਾਹੂਲ ਤੇ ਰੌਰ ਉਠਾਇ ।

kook pukaarain ketik dauare halaahool te rauar utthaae

Some are running whilst shouting loudly and calling attack causing immense commotion.

ਡਰਤਿ ਨਿਕਟ ਕੋ ਪਹੁਂਚਿ ਨ ਸੱਕਈ ਤੱਕਈ ਤੀਰਨ ਤੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੨॥

ddarat nikatt ko pahunch na sakee takee teeran te mar jaae ||12||

The guards were afraid to approach the fort; they knew they would die from being struck by arrows. ||12||

ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਬਨ ਦੇਤਿ ਤਲਾਵਾ ਦੁੰਦਭਿ ਆਗੇ ਬਜਤਿ ਚਲੰਤਿ ।

saavadhaan ban det talaavaa dundabh aage bajat chalant

The guards kept watch in a very alertful state, walking around whilst beating wardrums.

ਛੁਟਹਿ ਤੁਫੰਗ ਖਤੰਗ ਕਿਲੇ ਦਿਸ਼ਿ ਪੌਰ ਤੁਰੰਗਮ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਉਠੰਤਿ ।

chhutteh tufang khatang kile dish pauar turangam shabad utthant

Guns and arrows fired in the direction of the fort and the neighing of horses caused commotion.

ਜਬਿ ਕੋ ਦਸ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਇਕ ਸਰ ਸੋਂ ਮਾਰ੍ਯੋ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਨ ਅੱਗ੍ਰ ਵਧੰਤਿ ।

jab ko das hazaar ik sar son maarayo parayo na agr vadhant

Ever since Guru Ji killed ten thousand with one arrow, nobody dared to proceed forward.

ਬਹੁਰ ਜਾਮਨੀ ਸਮੈ ਬਿਲੋਕ੍ਯੋ ਨਿਜ ਨਿਜ ਥਾਨ ਥਿਰੇ ਡਰਪੰਤਿ ॥੧੩॥

bahur jaamanee samai bilokayo nij nij thaan thire ddarapant ||13||

In the darkness of the night, embodying fear, they all sat at each of their own encampments. ||13||

ਕਰਹਿਂ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਖਨ ਹੁਇ ਭੁਨਸਾਰੇ ਗਢ ਪਰ ਹੇਲਾ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਉਦਾਰ ।

karahin prateekhan hue bhunasaare gadt par helaa karahin udaar

They are eagerly awaiting the morning; anticipating that they will call a large attack upon the fort.

ਮਰੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੁਛ ਥੋਰੇ ਅਟਕੇ ਲਾਖੋਂ ਲਰ ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ।

mare singh kuchh thore attake laakhon lar lashakar sanghaar

The Singhs had been martyred in battle, some still remained; whom had singlehandedly killed thousands.

ਇਮ ਸਭਿ ਥਾਪ ਰਹੇ ਥਿਰ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਸ਼੍ਰਮਤਿ ਭਏ ਤਨ ਆਲਸ ਧਾਰਿ ।

eim sabh thaap rahe thir hvai kar shramat bhe tan aalas dhaar

In this way, the enemies sat fixed at their locations; embodying laziness from fatigue.

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੰਗ ਕੋ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਸਰਾਹਨਿ ਬਡੋ ਬਹਾਦੁਰ ਬਹੁ ਹੁਸ਼ੀਆਰ ॥੧੪॥

guroo jang ko karahin saraahan baddo bahaadur bahu husheeaar ||14||

They all praised the war waged by the Guru, "Guru Ji are very courageous and clever." ||14||

ਇਤ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਰ ਪੰਚੇ ਸਿੰਘਨਿ ਤੀਰ ਤੁਫੰਗਨਿ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ ।

eit satigur ar panche singhan teer tufangan karahin prahaar

Meanwhile, Satguru Ji and the five Singhs are attacking with their arrows and guns.

ਨਿਕਟ ਦਿਖਤਿ ਕੈ ਹਤਹਿਂ ਤਲਾਵੈ ਲਗਿ ਲਗਿ ਗਿਰਹਿਂ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਸਵਾਰ ।

nikatt dikhat kai hatahin talaavai lag lag girahin turang savaar

They kill off any guards they see come near and cavalry troops fall upon being struck.

ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਤਿ ਜੰਗ ਕਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਣ ਪ੍ਰਿਯ ਸ਼ੱਤ੍ਰੁਨਿ ਗਨ ਦੇ ਹਾਰ ।

tripat na hot jang kahu kar kar ran priy shatrun gan de haar

Their hunger for war could not be satiated; the lovers of war continued to kill enemies.

ਆਟਣ ਪਰੇ ਅੰਗੁਸ਼ਟ ਅੰਗੁਰੀ ਐਂਚਤਿ ਪਨਚ ਓਜ ਕੋ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧੫॥

aattan pare angushatt anguree ainchat panach oj ko dhaar ||15||

Due to them vigorously pulling their bow-strings, knots had formed in their fingers. ||15||

ਤਜੇ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਹੁਂ ਸਰ ਬਰਖਾਏ ਪੁਨ ਪੰਚਹੁਂ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਕੀਨਿ ।

taje hazaarahun sar barakhaae pun panchahun singh binatee keen

They showered a rain of thousands of arrows, then offered an request to the Guru.

ਨਿਕਸਹੁ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਮੋ ਭਲੋ ਅਬਿ ਹਠ ਕੋ ਤਜਹੁ ਕਰੇ ਰਿਪੁ ਹੀਨ ।

nikasahu shree prabh samo bhalo ab hatth ko tajahu kare rip heen

"O Satguru Ji, you must leave the fort; now is the best time. Please stop persisting.

ਦੇਖਹੁ ਸਗਰੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਗਏ ਖਪਿ ਇਕ ਰਾਵਰ ਕੇ ਪੰਥ ਅਧੀਨ ।

dekhahu sagare singh ge khap ik raavar ke panth adheen

All the Singhs have attained martyrdom, and there is a Panth subordinate to you.

ਜਹਾਂ ਥਿਰਹੁ ਪੁਨ ਰਚਹੁ ਹਜ਼ਰਾਹੁਂ ਥਿਰਹਿ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਜਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥੧੬॥

jahaan thirahu pun rachahu hazaraahun thireh khaalasaa jagat prabeen ||16||

Wherever you go, you will create thousands more; the sharp-witted Khalsa shall remain eternal." ||16||

ਇੱਤ੍ਯਾਦਿਕ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਰ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਸਭਿ ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਸਿਰ ਰਹੇ ਨਿਵਾਇ ।

eitayaadik bahu baar kehayo sabh haath jor sir rahe nivaae

In this way they pleaded several times; all folding their hands and bowing their heads.

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਿ ਪਿਖਿ ਬਿਕਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਰਣ ਮਾਰਣਿ ਮਰਣੋ ਬਨਿ ਆਇ ।

kripaa drishatt pikh bikase satigur ran maaran marano ban aae

With a merciful gaze, Satguru Ji smile and say, "Killing or being killed is the purpose of warriors.

ਪੰਥ ਹੋਨਿ ਕੀ ਸੋਚ ਨ ਧਰੀਅਹਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਅਕਾਲ ਕਾਲਕਾ ਮਾਇ ।

panth hon kee soch na dhareeeh kripaa akaal kaalakaa maae

Do not worry about the longevity of the Panth; the grace of Akal Purakh is upon us.

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਕੋ ਬਚ ਮਾਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਤਜਿ ਅਨੰਦ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਲਾਇ ॥੧੭॥

pratham khaalase ko bach maanayon taj anand pur bilam na laae ||17||

We have accepted the request of the Khalsa before, immediately leaving Anandpur. ||17||

ਅਬਿ ਹਮ ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਨਹਿਂ ਮਾਨਹਿਂ ਕਹਿਬੋ ਮਮ ਹਿਤ ਤ੍ਯਾਗੇ ਸਿੱਖਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ।

ab ham kayon nahin maanahin kahibo mam hit tayaage sikhan praan

So why shall I not listen to the Khalsa now; when my Sikhs have sacrificed their lives for me.

ਤੁਮ ਦੋਨਹੁਂ ਤ੍ਯਾਗਹੁ ਤਰ ਸਰ ਖਰ ਕਬਹੁਂ ਤੁਫੰਗ ਛੋਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਨ ।

tum donahun tayaagahu tar sar khar kabahun tufang chhor kar haan

You two must now shoot sharp arrows and guns and inflict great harm upon the enemies."

ਇਮ ਕਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਰੁ ਥਾਪੀ ਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਦੋਨਹੁਂ ਬੰਕੇ ਬੀਰ ਮਹਾਨ ।

eim keh kar ar thaapee de kar donahun banke beer mahaan

Saying this, Guru Ji, upon giving the two Singhs a 'Thapi,' made them superior.

ਗੁਰ ਸਮਸਰ ਬਯ ਸ਼ਮਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮ ਪਰੇ ਦੂਰ ਤੇ ਸਮ ਪਹਿਚਾਨ ॥੧੮॥

gur samasar bay shamas guroo sam pare door te sam pahichaan ||18||

The ages of the two were around the same as the Guru, their beards were also alike; ||18||

ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਪਰ ਸਿਰ ਕੋ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਤਬਿ ਲਾਇ ।

haath jor gur charan kamal par sir ko baar baar tab laae

ਭਏ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਮਝਾਰ ਅਟਾਰੀ ਤੂਰਨ ਤੀਰ ਤੁਫੰਗ ਚਲਾਇ ।

bhe suchet majhaar attaaree tooran teer tufang chalaae

Folding their hands, they continuously bowed their heads on the lotus-feet of the Guru.

ਉਤਰੇ ਆਪ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਤਰੇ ਕਹੁ ਤੀਨਹੁਂ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਗ ਨਿਜ ਲ੍ਯਾਇ ।

autare aap kripaal tare kahu teenahun singh sang nij layaae

Then, they once again positioned themselves and continued to shoot arrows and guns.

ਪੌਰ ਠੌਰ ਕੀ ਓਰ ਨ ਗਮਨੇ ਦ੍ਵਾਰ ਅਲਪ ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਆਇ ॥੧੯॥

pauar tthauar kee or na gamane dvaar alap jis pravishe aae ||19||

Satguru Ji then descended from the fort and brought the three Singhs along with them. ||19||

ਪਿਛਵਾਈ ਸੋ ਸਕਲ ਘਰਨ ਤੇ ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਤਹਿਂ ਗੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ।

pichhavaaee so sakal gharan te sane sane tahin ge bhagavaan

The smaller gate remained behind all the houses; Satguru ji slowly approached it.

ਤਕਰੇ ਤਹਾਂ ਕਿਵਾਰ ਅਸੰਜਤਿ ਸਾਂਕਰ ਦਿਢ ਕੈ ਕੁਲਫ ਮਹਾਨ ।

takare tahaan kivaar asanjat saankar didt kai kulaf mahaan

The doors had been locked very tightly; a large lock had been tied with a chain.

ਦੇਖਿ ਦਯਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਖੋਜੇ ਨਹਿਂ ਨਿਕਸਨ ਕੋ ਦ੍ਵਾਰ ਦਿਖਾਨ ।

dekh dayaa singh kar te khoje nahin nikasan ko dvaar dikhaan

Upon seeing this, Daya Singh searched but could not find any means of exiting.

ਵਾਕ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਗਾਢੋ ਇਹ ਮੁੰਦਤਿ ਕਿਤ ਕੁਲੀਦ ਅਬਿ ਪੱਯਤਿ ਪਾਨ ॥੨੦॥

vaak kehayo gaadto ih mundat kit kuleed ab payat paan ||20||

Then Daya Singh stated, "The lock has been sealed very tightly; where will we find a key? ||20||

ਸਾਂਕਰ ਕੁਲਫ ਪੀਨ ਦਿਢ ਲੋਹਾ ਬਲ ਤੇ ਨਹਿਂ ਟੂਟਹਿ ਲਖਿ ਲੀਨ ।

saankar kulaf peen didt lohaa bal te nahin ttootteh lakh leen

Both the chain and the lock are made from a strong iron; they will not break from force.

ਬਡੇ ਪੌਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਕਟ ਮੋਰਚੇ ਢੁਕੇ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਹੁਂ ਆਲਸ ਹੀਨ ।

badde pauar ke nikatt morache dtuke hazaarahun aalas heen

There are encapments near the main gate, where thousands of guards remain alertful.

ਢਹੈ ਭੀਤ ਦਰ ਨਯੋ ਬਨਾਵਹਿਂ ਲਗਹਿ ਬਿਲਮ ਲਿਹੁ ਰਾਵਰ ਚੀਨਿ ।

dtahai bheet dar nayo banaavahin lageh bilam lihu raavar cheen

If the door is knocked down, we can have another built; it will not take too much time.

ਹੁਕਮ ਜਥਾ ਫੁਰਮਾਵਨ ਕਰਿਹੋ ਤਥਾ ਕਾਰ ਹਮ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਸੁ ਚੀਨ ॥੨੧॥

hukam jathaa furamaavan kariho tathaa kaar ham karahin su cheen ||21||

Whatever you command, we shall do just that, and I will understand how to do it." ||21||

ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਿਸ ਛਿਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਬਾਮ ਚਰਨ ਕੀ ਠੋਕਰ ਮਾਰ ।

sun kar shree satigur tis chhin mahin baam charan kee tthokar maar

Hearing this, Satguru Ji kicked the lock with their left leg.

ਤੋਰ੍ਯੋ ਕੁਲਫ ਛੋਰ ਦਈ ਸਾਂਕਰ ਨਿਕਸਨ ਕੋ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ਤਬਿ ਤ੍ਯਾਰ ।

torayo kulaf chhor dee saankar nikasan ko hvai kai tab tayaar

The lock broke instantly and came loose from the chain; they then got ready to exit the fort.

ਤੀਨੋ ਸਿੰਘਨ ਸਨ ਫੁਰਮਾਯਹੁ ਇਹ ਤਾਰਾ ਤੁਮ ਲੇਹੁ ਨਿਹਾਰ ।

teeno singhan san furamaayahu ih taaraa tum lehu nihaar

Satguru Ji then told the three Singhs, "Take a look at this star.

ਹਮ ਤੇ ਬਿਛਰਹੁ ਪੰਥ ਨ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਤਬਿ ਗਮਨੌ ਇਤ ਕੋ ਧ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨੨॥

ham te bichharahu panth na paavahu tab gamanau it ko dhrit dhaar ||22||

If you seperate from us and cannot find the way, then embodying fortitude, follow this star. ||22||

ਕਰਹੁ ਸੇਧ ਇਸ ਤਾਰੇ ਦਿਸ਼ ਕੋ ਹਮ ਕੋ ਖੋਜ ਲੇਹੁ ਤਿਤ ਜਾਇ ।

karahu sedh is taare dish ko ham ko khoj lehu tith jaae

Walk in the direction of this star and look for us;

ਰਾਤਿ ਬਿਖੈ ਜੇ ਮੇਲ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਈ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤਿ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਤਬਿ ਆਇ ।

raat bikhai je mel na hovai bhee prabhaat milahu tab aae

if you cannot find us at night then wait for the morning.

ਚਿੰਤ ਨ ਕਰੀਅਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਨ ਧਰੀਅਹਿ ਖੇਹ ਰਿਪੁਨ ਕੀ ਆਂਖਨ ਪਾਇ ।

chint na kareeeh traas na dhareeeh kheh ripun kee aankhan paae

Do not worry or embody fear; throw dust in the eyes of the enemies.

ਪਰਹੁ ਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਿ ਅਨਿਸ਼ਟਿ ਨਸ਼ਟ ਹੁਇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਇਸ਼ਟ ਬਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਸਦਾਇ ॥੨੩॥

parahu na drishatt anishatt nashatt hue praapat ishatt barishatt sadaae ||23||

They will not be able to see you; all hindrances will be destroyed and you will find us." ||23||

ਇੱਤ੍ਯਾਦਿਕ ਸਭਿ ਭੇਦ ਬਤਾਯੋ ਧਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੇ ਦਰ ਖੁਲ੍ਹਵਾਇ ।

eitayaadik sabh bhed bataayo dharam singh te dar khulhavaae

Saying this, Guru Ji got Dharam Singh to open the door.

ਤਾਕੀ ਅਲਪ ਕਿਵਾਰ ਉਘਾਰੇ ਨਿਕਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਰਖਾਇ ।

taakee alap kivaar ughaare nikase pratham prabhoo harakhaae

Upon opening the small doors, Satguru Ji were the first to exit.

ਸਿੰਘ ਤੀਨ ਪਸ਼ਚਾਤ ਵਹਿਰ ਭੇ ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਤ੍ਰਾਸਨਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਇ ।

singh teen pashachaat vahir bhe sane sane traasan bisaraae

The three Singhs exited right after and slowly forgot their fears.

ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਜਹਾਂ ਕਹਿਂ ਦੇਖ੍ਯੋ ਧੁਖਹਿਂ ਪਲੀਤੇ ਤੁਪਤ ਚਲਾਇਂ ॥੨੪॥

lashakar parayo jahaan kahin dekhayo dhukhahin paleete tupat chalaaein ||24||

Here and there, they saw the enemy army as fuses are burning and guns are being shot. ||24||

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਹਠੀਲਾ ਧਨੁਖ ਕਠੋਰ ਘੋਰ ਕਰ ਲੀਨ ।

shree gur gobind singh hattheelaa dhanukh katthor ghor kar leen

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji are very persistent; they hold a frightening bow in their hand.

ਕਰੇ ਨਿਰੀਛਨ ਈਛਨ ਤੇ ਸਰ ਤੀਛਨ ਭੀਛਨ ਆਛੇ ਬੀਨ ।

kare nireechhan eechhan te sar teechhan bheechhan aachhe been

With their eyes they very selectively picked extremely sharp arrows for their quiver.

ਤਰਕਸ਼ ਭਰ੍ਯੋ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਕਟ ਕਸਿਬੋ ਧਰ੍ਯੋ ਖੜਗ ਖਰ ਜਮਧਰ ਚੀਨ ।

tarakash bharayo karayo katt kasibo dharayo kharrag khar jamadhar cheen

They filled their quiver with arrows, tightened their waistband, and lifted a sword.

ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਬਜ਼ ਧਰਿ ਜੁਗਲ ਤਮਾਂਚੇ ਕਮਰਕਸਾ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥੨੫॥

pesh kabaz dhar jugal tamaanche kamarakasaa bahu keen prabeen ||25||

Taking along a Peshkabz, they also tightened two pistols inside their waistband. ||25||

ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਹੁ ਮੋਲ ਕੇ ਦਿਪਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕੀ ਕ੍ਰਾਂਤ ।

shasatr basatr bahu mol ke dipat prabhoo kee kraant

Upon adorning very valuable weapons and vestments, the Satguru appeared luminant.

ਜਬਰ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਜੇਵਰਨਿ ਲਾਖਹੁਂ ਕੇ ਅਵਦਾਤਿ ॥੨੬॥

jabar javaahar jevaran laakhahun ke avadaat ||26||

Their jewelery encrusted with diamonds and precious gems gleamed very brightly. ||26||
