ਸੁੱਖਾ ਮਿਰਚਾਂ ਤ੍ਯਾਰ ਕਰਿ ਲ੍ਯਾਇ ਗੁਲਾਬਾ ਪਾਸ ।

sukhaa mirachaan tayaar kar layaae gulaabaa paas

Preparing Sukha with black peppers, Gulaba brought it along with him;

ਪੂਰਿ ਕਟੋਰਾ ਅੱਗ੍ਰ ਧਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਉਠਾਇ ਤ੍ਰਿਖ ਨਾਸ਼ ॥੧॥

poor kattoraa agr dhar gur utthaae trikh naash ||1||

As he placed forth the bowl, Guru Ji lifted it and eliminated their thirst. ||1||

ਸਰਦ ਨੀਰ ਬਰ ਪਾਨ ਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਪ੍ਯਾਸ ਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ।

sarad neer bar paan te sabh payaas binaashee

Upon drinking the cold sublime water, all of [their] thirst was dispelled.

ਅਰਕਦੁਘਧ ਕੋ ਦੁਰਅਮਲ ਬਡ ਉਸ਼ਨ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ੀ ।

arakadughadh ko duramal badd ushan prakaashee

The intoxication from the ‘Akk’ milk went away, great warmth ensued.

ਉਰ ਅਨੰਦ ਕਹੁ ਮਾਨ ਕਰਿ ਉਠਿ ਚਹ੍ਯੋ ਪਯਾਨਾ ।

aur anand kahu maan kar utth chehayo payaanaa

After feeling great bliss in [their] heart, [they] arose and wished to walk.

ਚਰਨ ਫਾਲਰੇ ਬਹੁ ਪਰੇ ਦੈਂ ਖੇਦ ਮਹਾਨਾ ॥੨॥

charan faalare bahu pare dain khed mahaanaa ||2||

There were many blisters on [their] feet which were causing immense pain. ||2||

ਮਾਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਤਬਿ ਬਲ ਸਾਥ ਉਠਾਏ ।

maan singh balavant tab bal saath utthaae

The mighty Maan Singh, with his strength, then helped lift [Guru Sahib].

ਗਏ ਸੌਚ ਹਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਤੇ ਤਟ ਸਲਿਤਾ ਥਾਏ ।

ge sauach hit karan te tatt salitaa thaae

To have a wash, they arrived at the place on the bank of the river Sutlej.

ਬਡੀ ਝੀਲ ਬੇਲਾ ਖਰ੍ਯੋ ਨਹਿਂ ਦਿਖਤ ਨਜੀਕਾ ।

baddee jheel belaa kharayo nahin dikhat najeekaa

There remained a great lake and dense forests; nothing else could be seen.

ਕਾਹ ਪਟੇਰਾ ਆਦਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਸੰਘਨ ਤਿਹ ਨੀਕਾ ॥੩॥

kaah patteraa aad trin sanghan tih neekaa ||3||

‘Kahi’ (reed grass), ‘Patera’ (Typhaceae) and other thick grasses stood tall. ||3||

ਪ੍ਰਵਿਸੇ ਜਾਇ ਮਝਾਰ ਤਿਹ ਕਰਿ ਸੌਚ ਪਯਾਨੇ ।

pravise jaae majhaar tih kar sauach payaane

[Guru Sahib] went and submerged themselves within [the river] for an ablution.

ਉਪਬਨ ਕੋ ਆਵਨ ਲਗੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਚੀਰ ਮਹਾਨੇ ।

aupaban ko aavan lage trin cheer mahaane

They then began walking to the grove upon harvesting the thick grasses.

ਤਹਿਂ ਮਹਿਖੀ ਚਾਰਤਿ ਫਿਰਤਿ ਇਕ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਾਹੀ ।

tahin mahikhee chaarat firat ik moorakh maahee

At that place, there was a foolish herdsman who was grazing his buffaloes.

ਆਵਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਲੋਕਿ ਤਿਸ ਬਿਸਮ੍ਯੋ ਮਨ ਮਾਂਹੀ ॥੪॥

aavat guroo bilok tis bisamayo man maanhee ||4||

Seeing Guru Ji arrive nearby, he became very astonished in his mind. ||4||

ਮਨ ਜਾਨੀ ਇਹ ਸਿੰਘ ਹੈਂ ਤਜਿ ਚਲੇ ਲਰਾਈ ।

man jaanee ih singh hain taj chale laraaee

In his mind, he considered: “These are Singhs, they have left from a battle.

ਮੈਂ ਅਬਿ ਕਰੌਂ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕੋ ਦੈ ਹੌਂ ਪਕਰਾਈ ।

main ab karauan pukaar ko dai hauan pakaraaee

I shall now let out a call and have them apprehended.”

ਇਮ ਨਿਸ਼ਚੈ ਕਰਿ ਊਚ ਧੁਨਿ ਮੁਖ ਬਾਕ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ।

eim nishachai kar aooch dhun mukh baak pukaaraa

In this way, with determination—with a loud voice, he shouted from his mouth.

ਸਿੰਘ ਪਲਾਏ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੈਂ ਇਹ ਝੀਲ ਮਝਾਰਾ ॥੫॥

singh palaae jaat hain ih jheel majhaaraa ||5||

“There are Singhs running away by the river!” ||5||

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਬੋਲੇ ਧਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਇਹ ਜਾਨ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ।

shree gur bole dharam singh ih jaan na paavai

Sri Guru Ji said “Dharam Singh, he should not escape!

ਗਹਿ ਆਨਹੁਂ ਮਤਿ ਮੰਦ ਕੋ ਨਹਿਂ ਰੌਰ ਉਠਾਵੈ ।

geh aanahun mat mand ko nahin rauar utthaavai

Catch that ill-witted man and bring him here before he raises commotion.”

ਸੁਨਿ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਸਮ ਬੇਗ ਕਰਿ ਪਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਤਤਕਾਲਾ ।

sun kehar sam beg kar pakarayo tatakaalaa

Hearing this, [Dharam Singh] became agile like a lion and caught him immediately.

ਆਨ੍ਯੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਕਟ ਡਰ ਗਯੋ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ ॥੬॥

aanayo satigur ke nikatt ddar gayo bisaalaa ||6||

When [Dharam Singh] brought him to Satguru Ji, he became very frightened. ||6||

ਕਹੁ ਕੁੱਟਣ ਕੂਕ੍ਯੋ ਕਹਾਂ ਕ੍ਯਾ ਲੇਹੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੀ ।

kahu kuttan kookayo kahaan kayaa lehu pukaaree

“Speak, you procurer! Why did you shout? What will you gain from calling out?

ਜੇ ਹਮ ਪਲਟਾ ਲੇਹਿਂ ਅਬਿ ਦੈ ਹੈਂ ਤੁਹਿ ਮਾਰੀ ।

je ham palattaa lehin ab dai hain tuhi maaree

If we were to exact revenge [for this act], we could kill you at this instant.”

ਸੁਨਿ ਮਾਹੀ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਕੈ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੁ ਬਾਕ ਉਚਾਰਾ ।

sun maahee kar jor kai mrid baak uchaaraa

Hearing this, the herdsman folded his hands and spoke some sweet words:

ਜਾਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਗੁਰ ਆਪ ਉਦਾਰਾ ॥੭॥

jaanayon main tum ko naheen gur aap udaaraa ||7||

“I did not recognize you; you are the benevolent Guru. ||7||

ਸਿੰਘ ਕਹੂੰ ਕੇ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੈਂ ਇਮ ਜਾਨਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ।

singh kahoon ke jaat hain im jaan pukaaraa

Singhs were travelling in some direction; knowing this, I had let out a cry.

ਛਿਮਹੁ ਅਬਹਿ ਨਹਿਂ ਬੋਲਿ ਹੌਂ ਪਿਖਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਤੁਹਾਰਾ ।

chhimahu abeh nahin bol hauan pikh daras tuhaaraa

Forgive me, I will not shout again; I have now had a glimpse of thee.”

ਗੁਰੂ ਕਮਰ ਖੰਜਰ ਤਬੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਕਰ ਦੀਨੋ ।

guroo kamar khanjar tabai tis ke kar deeno

Guru Ji then withdrew a Khanjar from their Kamarkassa and placed it in his hand.

ਹੀਰੇ ਜਰੇ ਜਰਾਵ ਮੈਂ ਜਿਹ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪੀਨੋ ॥੮॥

heere jare jaraav main jih keemat peeno ||8||

[The Khanjar] was embedded with diamonds, which were worth a great sum. ||8||

ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਪੌਤ੍ਰ ਲਗਿ ਸਦਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਕਰੀਅਹਿ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਾਨਾ ।

putr pauatr lag sadan mahin kareeeh guzaraanaa

“Keep this within your home, providing sustenance to your children and grandchildren.

ਬੇਚਹਿਂ ਕਈ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਕੋ ਧਨ ਪਾਇਂ ਮਹਾਨਾ ।

bechahin kee hazaar ko dhan paaein mahaanaa

If you sell this, you will gain a large sum of many thousands.

ਨਹਿਂ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਘਰ ਗਮਨ ਕਰਿ ਛੋਰਹਿਂ ਅਬਿ ਤੋਹੀ ।

nahin bolahu ghar gaman kar chhorahin ab tohee

Do not shout, now go home; we have spared you.”

ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਹੀ ਨਮੋ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਖ ਤੂਸ਼ਨਿ ਹੋਹੀ ॥੯॥

sun kar maahee namo kar mukh tooshan hohee ||9||

Hearing this, the herdsman paid obeisance and became silent. ||9||

ਆਇ ਬਿਰਾਜੇ ਬਾਗ ਮਹਿਂ ਦਿਨ ਸਕਲ ਬਿਤਾਯੋ ।

aae biraaje baag mahin din sakal bitaayo

[Guru Sahib] then arrived and settled within the grove; there they spent the entire day.

ਸੰਧ੍ਯਾ ਸਮੈਂ ਬਿਲੋਕਿ ਕੈ ਜਬਿ ਰਵਿ ਅਸਤਾਯੋ ।

sandhayaa samain bilok kai jab rav asataayo

In the evening time, when they saw that the sun has set,

ਆਇ ਗੁਲਾਬਾ ਸੰਗ ਲੇ ਗਮਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਘਰ ਮਾਂਹੀ ।

aae gulaabaa sang le gamanayon ghar maanhee

Then Gulaba took them along with him and entered his home.

ਹੁਤੋ ਚੁਬਾਰਾ ਸਦਨ ਪਰ ਨਵ ਚਿਨ੍ਯੋ ਤਦਾਹੀ ॥੧੦॥

huto chubaaraa sadan par nav chinayo tadaahee ||10||

There was a ‘Chubara’ (a room on the topmost floor) at his house which had been newly constructed. ||10||

ਪ੍ਰਣ ਧਾਰ੍ਯੋ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਪੂਰਬ ਇਤ ਪਾਵੈਂ ।

pran dhaarayo gur ke charan poorab it paavain

He had vowed, “first Guru Ji will set foot in this Chubara;

ਹਮ ਪੀਛੈ ਬਿਚ ਬਾਸਿ ਹੈਂ ਇਮ ਚਿਤ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਤਾਵੈ ।

ham peechhai bich baas hain im chit drirrataavai

I will enter it afterwards.” In this way, he had fixed his mind.

ਤਊ ਤੁਰਕ ਕੇ ਰਾਜ ਕਰਿ ਡਰਪੰਤਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ।

taoo turak ke raaj kar ddarapant ghanere

Despite this, since it was the Turks’ rule, he was very fearful.

ਦੁਤਿਯ ਪੰਜਾਬਾ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਤਿਹ ਲਾਚਾਰ ਬਡੇਰੇ ॥੧੧॥

dutiy panjaabaa bhraat tih laachaar baddere ||11||

Secondly, Punjaba was his brother, who was very helpless. ||11||

ਸੁੰਦਰ ਏਕ ਪ੍ਰਯੰਕ ਤਬਿ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਡਾਸਾ ।

sundar ek prayank tab mandar mahin ddaasaa

Then, a beautiful cot was laid within the room.

ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਬਿਠਾਵਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਚਰਜ ਬਿਲਾਸਾ ।

karayo bitthaavan satiguroo aacharaj bilaasaa

They seated Satguru Ji upon it, whose marvels are delightful.

ਖਾਨ ਪਾਨ ਸਭਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਸ ਮਹਿਂ ਸੁਪਤਾਏ ।

khaan paan sabh bidh kare nis mahin supataae

After eating, drinking, and performing all such tasks, [Guru Sahib] slept at night.

ਪ੍ਰਾਤਿ ਉਠੇ ਕਰਿ ਸੌਚ ਕੋ ਜਲ ਘਨੋ ਅਨਾਏ ॥੧੨॥

praat utthe kar sauach ko jal ghano anaae ||12||

Waking at dawn, they ordered water to be brought for their ablution. ||12||

ਕਰੀ ਰਦਨ ਧਾਵਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖ ਕਮਲ ਪਖਾਰਾ ।

karee radan dhaavan guroo mukh kamal pakhaaraa

Upon brushing with a ‘Datun’ (teeth-cleaning walnut bark), they washed their lotus-face.

ਪੁਨ ਚੌਂਕੀ ਪਰ ਖਰੇ ਹੁਇ ਮੱਜਨ ਤਨ ਧਾਰਾ ।

pun chauankee par khare hue majan tan dhaaraa

Then, standing on a wooden stool, they washed their body.

ਕਟ ਕੀ ਕਾਛ ਨਿਕਾਰ ਕਰਿ ਤਹਿਂ ਨੀਚੇ ਡਾਰੀ ।

katt kee kaachh nikaar kar tahin neeche ddaaree

Undoing their Kachera, which was worn under their Kamarkassa, they lowered it down.

ਆੜਬੰਦ ਅੰਤਰ ਹੁਤੋ ਦਿਢ ਕਸ੍ਯੋ ਸੁਧਾਰੀ ॥੧੩॥

aarraband antar huto didt kasayo sudhaaree ||13||

Their inner ‘Aarhband’ (loincloth-like garment) had been tied extremely tight. ||13||

ਸੋ ਆਮਿਖ ਮਹਿਂ ਖੁਭਿ ਰਹ੍ਯੋ ਜਮਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਣਤ ਸਾਥਾ ।

so aamikh mahin khubh rehayo jam shronat saathaa

It was piercing the flesh [of their stomach], and blood had solidified upon it.

ਰਹੇ ਨਿਕਾਸ ਨ ਨਿਕਸਤੋ ਐਂਚ੍ਯੋਂ ਗਹਿ ਹਾਥਾ ।

rahe nikaas na nikasato ainchayon geh haathaa

They tried removing it, but it would not come off; they tried pulling it with their hand.

ਤਬਹਿ ਗੁਲਾਬੇ ਕੋ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਤਨ ਨਿਕਾਸੋ ।

tabeh gulaabe ko kehayo kar jatan nikaaso

[Guru Sahib] then told Gulaba, “make an effort to take it out.”

ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਕਾਢਨ ਲਗ੍ਯੋ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ਬਹੁ ਪਾਸੋ ॥੧੪॥

sane sane kaadtan lagayo hvai kai bahu paaso ||14||

Gulaba went aside and very slowly tried to remove it. ||14||

ਸ਼ੰਕਤ ਚਿਤ ਗੁਰ ਨਗਨ ਤੇ ਨਹਿਂ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਕਰਿ ਹੇਰੇ ।

shankat chit gur nagan te nahin drig kar here

He had a worry in his mind—”may I not see Guru Sahib unclothed with my eyes.”

ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਗਯੋ ਜਮ ਅਧਿਕ ਹੀ ਨਿਕਸਿ ਨ ਜਿਸ ਬੇਰੇ ।

basatr gayo jam adhik hee nikas na jis bere

As the cloth had become solidified [with blood], when it did not come off,

ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਹਿਂ ਸ਼ੰਕ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਲੋਕਿ ਨਿਕਾਸੋ ।

kehayo guroo nahin shank kar avalok nikaaso

Guru Ji said, “do not worry; look [properly] and remove it.

ਪਿਤ ਸੁਤ ਦੋਸ਼ ਨ ਨਗਨ ਕੋ ਨਹਿਂ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਾਂਸੋ ॥੧੫॥

pit sut dosh na nagan ko nahin keejai saanso ||15||

There is no fault in nudity among a father and son; fear not.” ||15||

ਤਊ ਗੁਲਾਬਾ ਸ਼ੰਕਤੋ ਜਲ ਡਾਰਿ ਭਿਗੋਵੈ ।

taoo gulaabaa shankato jal ddaar bhigovai

Still, Gulaba worried; he poured water and dampened the cloth.

ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਖਿਸਕਾਇ ਪਟ ਨਿਕਸਾਇ ਸੁ ਜੋਵੈ ।

sane sane khisakaae patt nikasaae su jovai

Very slowly, he moved the cloth around and tried removing it.

ਜੁਗਲ ਉਰੂ ਤੇ ਐਂਚਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਟ ਗੀਲਾ ।

jugal uroo te ainch kar kar kar patt geelaa

From both sides, he dampened the cloth and pulled on it.

ਨੀਠ ਨੀਠ ਕਾਢਨ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਪੁਨ ਪੁਨ ਕਰਿ ਢੀਲਾ ॥੧੬॥

neetth neetth kaadtan karayo pun pun kar dteelaa ||16||

Then, loosening it, with difficulty, he took it out. ||16||

ਅਪਰ ਕਾਛ ਪਹਿਰੀ ਬਹੁਰ ਸਭਿ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਜਾਏ ।

apar kaachh pahiree bahur sabh basatr sajaae

[Guru Sahib] then wore their Kachera and donned other garments.

ਤਥਾ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਤਿਸ ਥਾਂਏ ।

tathaa shasatr dhaaran kare baitthe tis thaane

Then, after adorning themselves with weapons, they sat at that spot.

ਖਾਨ ਪਾਨ ਤੈਸੇ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਸੋ ਦਿਵਸ ਬਿਤਾਯੋ ।

khaan paan taise karayo so divas bitaayo

[Like the previous day], they ate, drank, and spent the day.

ਆਇ ਗੁਲਾਬੇ ਨਿਕਟ ਤਬਿ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਅਲਾਯੋ ॥੧੭॥

aae gulaabe nikatt tab kar jor alaayo ||17||

Then Gulaba came near; he folded his hands and requested: ||17||

ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਕ੍ਯਾ ਅਸਨ ਅਬਿ ਕਰਿਵਾਵੌਂ ਤ੍ਯਾਰਾ ।

mahaaraaj kayaa asan ab karivaavauan tayaaraa

“O Maharaj! What food should I now prepare for you?

ਜਿਸ ਪਰ ਰੁਚਿ ਹੁਇ ਆਪ ਕੀ ਸੋ ਬਨਹਿ ਅਹਾਰਾ ।

jis par ruch hue aap kee so baneh ahaaraa

Whatever it is that you desire, I will have it made.”

ਕਰਨ ਪਾਰਖਾ ਤਿਨਹੁਂ ਕੀ ਗੁਰ ਹੁਕਮ ਬਖਾਨਾ ।

karan paarakhaa tinahun kee gur hukam bakhaanaa

To test [Gulaba], Guru Ji uttered a command from their mouth:

ਆਮਿਖ ਆਨਹੁਂ ਛਾਂਗ ਇਕ ਝਟਕੈਂ ਨਿਜ ਪਾਨਾ ॥੧੮॥

aamikh aanahun chhaang ik jhattakain nij paanaa ||18||

“Go and bring a goat, we shall slaughter it with our own hands." ||18||

ਤਬਹਿ ਗੁਲਾਬੇ ਖੋਜਿ ਕੈ ਦੇ ਮੋਲ ਸੁ ਲ੍ਯਾਯੋ ।

tabeh gulaabe khoj kai de mol su layaayo

Then Gulaba, after searching, purchased and brought a goat.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੇ ਢਿਗ ਲੇ ਗਯੋ ਤਹਿਂ ਖਰੇ ਟਿਕਾਯੋ ।

shree prabh ke dtig le gayo tahin khare ttikaayo

He brought it near Sri Prabhu [Guru Ji] and stood it in place.

ਤੁਪਕ ਮਾਰਿ ਝਟਕਾ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਭਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਉਚੇਰੇ ।

tupak maar jhattakaa karayo bhaa shabad uchere

[Guru Ji] fired a rifle and slaughtered the goat; it produced a loud noise.

ਸੁਨਤਿ ਗੁਲਾਬਾ ਥਰਹਰ੍ਯੋ ਬਿਦਤੈ ਨਰ ਹੇਰੇ ॥੧੯॥

sunat gulaabaa tharaharayo bidatai nar here ||19||

Hearing it, Gulaba quivered [in fear], that people would arrive to investigate. ||19||

ਇਕਿ ਦਿਸ਼ ਹੁਤੋ ਪੜੋਸ ਕੋ ਘਰ ਦਿਜ ਕੋ ਬਾਸਾ ।

eik dish huto parros ko ghar dij ko baasaa

In a neighboring house, there resided a Brahmin.

ਦੁਤਿਯ ਦਿਸ਼ਾ ਸੱਯਦ ਬਸੈ ਬਹੁ ਨਿਕਟ ਅਵਾਸਾ ।

dutiy dishaa sayad basai bahu nikatt avaasaa

In the opposite direction, there lived a Sayyid nearby.

ਬਿੱਪ੍ਰ ਬਿਲੋਕੇ ਉਕਸਿ ਕੈ ਗੁਰ ਰੂਪ ਪਛਾਨੇ ।

bipr biloke ukas kai gur roop pachhaane

The Brahmin arose and looked; he recognized the form of the Guru.

ਆਗੇ ਗਯੋ ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰਿ ਤਹਿਂ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਠਾਨੇ ॥੨੦॥

aage gayo anandapur tahin darashan tthaane ||20||

Earlier, he had visited Anandpur and received a glimpse [of Guru Sahib]. ||20||

ਡਾਰਿ ਪਤਾਸੇ ਥਲ ਮਹਿਂ ਧਰਿ ਬੀਚ ਜਨੇਊ ।

ddaar pataase thal mahin dhar beech janeaoo

[The Brahmin] placed some ‘Patasey’ (sugary sweets) and a Janeu on a platter;

ਆਨ ਅਚਾਨਕ ਘਰ ਬਰ੍ਯੋ ਨਹਿਂ ਰੋਕ੍ਯੋ ਕੇਊ ।

aan achaanak ghar barayo nahin rokayo keaoo

He suddenly entered the home—nobody stopped him from entering.

ਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਆਸ਼ਿਖ ਦੇਇ ਕਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਥਾਲ ਅਗਾਰੀ ।

gur ko aashikh dee kar dhar thaal agaaree

Giving Guru Ji his blessings, he placed forth the platter.

ਪੰਚ ਮੁਹਰ ਨਿਜ ਹਾਥ ਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਮਹਿਂ ਡਾਰੀ ॥੨੧॥

panch muhar nij haath le prabh tis mahin ddaaree ||21||

Taking five gold coins in their hands, Prabhu [Guru Ji] placed them on the platter. ||21||

ਪੁਨ ਅਸੀਸ ਕੋ ਬਿੱਪ੍ਰ ਦੇ ਨਿਜ ਸਦਨ ਪਹੂਚਾ ।

pun asees ko bipr de nij sadan pahoochaa

Then after giving his blessings, the Brahmin returned to his home.

ਡਰੇ ਗੁਲਾਬ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਉਰ ਨਹਿਂ ਬੋਲਤਿ ਊਚਾ ।

ddare gulaab panjaab ur nahin bolat aoochaa

Gulaba and Punjaba were very frightened, they did not speak aloud.

ਜਾਨ ਜਾਇ ਪੁਰਿ ਨਗਰ ਸਭਿ ਮੁਝ ਆਨਿ ਗਹੈ ਹੈਂ ।

jaan jaae pur nagar sabh mujh aan gahai hain

“Now the entire village will find out; they will arrive and apprehend me.

ਜਤਨ ਛੁਟਨ ਕੋ ਪੁਨ ਕਹਾਂ ਨਾਹਕ ਮਰਿ ਜੈਹੈਂ ॥੨੨॥

jatan chhuttan ko pun kahaan naahak mar jaihain ||22||

Then there will not be any means of escaping; I will be killed in vain.” ||22||

ਆਮਿਖ ਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਕ ਤਬਿ ਆਛੇ ਸੁਧਰਾ੍ਯੋ ।

aamikh ko kar paak tab aachhe sudharaayo

The meat was then cooked and prepared in a well manner.

ਖਲਰੀ ਚਾਰੋਂ ਚਰਨ ਅਜ ਇਕ ਥਾਨ ਟਿਕਾਯੋ ।

khalaree chaaron charan aj ik thaan ttikaayo

The hide and all four hooves of the goat were then gathered in one spot.

ਕਿਤਿਕ ਸਮੈਂ ਬੀਤ੍ਯੋ ਜਬੈ ਇਕ ਨਿਕਟ ਮਸੀਤਾ ।

kitik samain beetayo jabai ik nikatt maseetaa

After some time had passed, there was a mosque near the house;

ਕਾਜ਼ੀ ਬਾਂਗ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕਰਿ ਬੋਲ੍ਯੋ ਨਿਰਭੀਤਾ ॥੨੩॥

kaazee baang pukaar kar bolayo nirabheetaa ||23||

There, the Qazi performed the Adhan and spoke without fear. ||23||

ਸੁਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਉਠਿ ਪਲੰਘ ਤੈ ਲੇ ਖਲਰੀ ਛਾਂਗਾ ।

sun satigur utth palangh tai le khalaree chhaangaa

Hearing this, Satguru Ji arose from the cot and took the goat-hide.

ਪਗ ਸਿਰ ਬੀਚ ਲਪੇਟ ਕਰਿ ਗਮਨੇ ਤਿਤ ਆਗਾ ।

pag sir beech lapett kar gamane tith aagaa

Wrapping the goat's head and hooves in it, they approached [the Qazi].

ਕੋਸ਼ਠ ਕੋਸ਼ਠ ਗਨ ਉਲਂਘਿ ਪਹੁਂਚੇ ਤਹਿਂ ਜਾਈ ।

koshatth koshatth gan ulangh pahunche tahin jaaee

Passing over each and every terrace, they arrived at that place,

ਖਰੋ ਪੁਕਾਰਤਿ ਬਾਂਗ ਜਹਿਂ ਊਚੇ ਬਲ ਲਾਈ ॥੨੪॥

kharo pukaarat baang jahin aooche bal laaee ||24||

Where the Qazi was performing the Adhan in a very loud voice. ||24||

ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਕੋ ਤਾਕ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਰੀ ਤਤਕਾਲਾ ।

tis ke sir ko taak kar maaree tatakaalaa

Using his head as a target, they quickly flung [the goat’s remains].

ਪਗੀਆ ਉਤਰੀ ਧਰਿ ਪਰੀ ਭਾ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ ।

pageea utaree dhar paree bhaa kashatt bisaalaa

The turban [of the Qazi] fell to the ground and he felt immense pain.

ਕੋਸ਼ਠ ਕੋਸ਼ਠ ਪੰਥ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਪਹੁਂਚੇ ਆਈ ।

koshatth koshatth panth jo gur pahunche aaee

Then, passing over each terrace, Guru Ji returned to the Chubara.

ਇਤ ਉਤ ਕਾਜ਼ੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਬਡ ਰੌਰ ਉਠਾਈ ॥੨੫॥

eit ut kaazee dekh kai badd rauar utthaaee ||25||

The Qazi looked around and caused a great commotion. ||25||

ਹਤਨਹਾਰ ਦੇਖ੍ਯੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੂਸ਼ਨ ਮੁਖਧਾਰੀ ।

hatanahaar dekhayo naheen tooshan mukhadhaaree

When he could not see anyone who could have hit him, he became silent.

ਬਿਸਮਾਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਚਿਤਵਤਿ ਭਯੋ ਨਭ ਤੇ ਕਿਨ ਮਾਰੀ ।

bisamaanayon chitavat bhayo nabh te kin maaree

In astonishment, he thought in his mind, “who has thrown this goat-hide from the sky?”

ਖਲਰੀ ਵਹਿਰ ਮਸੀਤ ਤੇ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਬਗਾਈ ।

khalaree vahir maseet te tatakaal bagaaee

He then immediately threw the hide outside of the mosque.

ਮਾਰਿ ਖਾਇ ਮਤਿਮੰਦ ਤਬਿ ਪੁਨ ਮੋਨ ਰਹਾਈ ॥੨੬॥

maar khaae matimand tab pun mon rahaaee ||26||

The ill-witted [Qazi] then became silent after receiving a thrashing. ||26||

ਭੂਲ੍ਯੋ ਬਾਂਗ ਨਿਵਾਜ਼ ਕੋ ਨਿਜ ਸਦਨ ਸਿਧਾਰਾ ।

bhoolayo baang nivaaz ko nij sadan sidhaaraa

The Qazi then forsook the Adhan and Namaz and went home.

ਇਤ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਚਵਨ ਲਗੇ ਭਾ ਤ੍ਯਾਰ ਅਹਾਰਾ ।

eit satigur achavan lage bhaa tayaar ahaaraa

Here, Satguru Ji were about to eat the freshly prepared meal.

ਛਾਂਗ ਮਾਸ ਕੋ ਅਚਵਤੇ ਤਿਸ ਅਸਥਿ ਬਗਾਵੈਂ ।

chhaang maas ko achavate tis asath bagaavain

As they eat the goat meat, they toss the bones outside.

ਦਿਜ ਅਰੁ ਸੱਯਦ ਕੇ ਸਦਨ ਗਿਰ ਨਾਦ ਉਠਾਵੈਂ ॥੨੭॥

dij ar sayad ke sadan gir naad utthaavain ||27||

[The bones] land in the houses of the Brahmin and Sayyid, making noise. ||27||

ਬਿੱਪ੍ਰ ਬਿਲੋਕੇ ਜਾਨਿ ਸਭਿ ਨਹਿਂ ਕਛੂ ਉਚਾਰੀ ।

bipr biloke jaan sabh nahin kachhoo uchaaree

The Brahmin saw this and knew everything, but did not say a thing.

ਦੇਖਤਿ ਸੱਯਦ ਬਹੁ ਰਿਸ੍ਯੋ ਬੋਲਤਿ ਦੇ ਗਾਰੀ ।

dekhat sayad bahu risayo bolat de gaaree

[But] the Sayyid, upon seeing this, became enraged and began cursing.

ਸੁਨਹੁ ਗੁਲਾਬੇ ਮੰਦਮਤਿ ਹਮ ਪਰਦਾ ਢਾਕਾ ।

sunahu gulaabe mandamat ham paradaa dtaakaa

“Listen Gulaba, you ill-witted fool! I had kept [your] secret.

ਸਿੰਘ ਦੁਰਾਏ ਸਦਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਤੁਝ ਭੈ ਨਹਿਂ ਕਾਂ ਕਾ ॥੨੮॥

singh duraae sadan mahin tujh bhai nahin kaan kaa ||28||

You have hidden Singhs in your home, do you not have any fear? ||28||

ਹੋਨੇ ਦੇਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤ ਕੋ ਹਮ ਜਾਇ ਪੁਕਾਰੈਂ ।

hone dehu prabhaat ko ham jaae pukaarain

Let the morning come, I will go and let out a call;

ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਕੇ ਲ੍ਯਾਇਂ ਨਰ ਘਰ ਤੋਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਰੈਂ ।

paatishaah ke layaaein nar ghar tohi dikhaarain

Bringing the Emperor’s men, I will have them search your home.

ਪੇਟ ਚਾਕ ਤੁਵ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਕੋ ਗਹਿ ਸੋ ਕਰਿਵਾਵੈਂ ।

pett chaak tuv kuttanb ko geh so karivaavain

They will apprehend your family members and rupture their stomachs.

ਹਮਰੇ ਘਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਅਸਥਿ ਇਹ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਗਿਰਵਾਵੈਂ ॥੨੯॥

hamare ghar mahin asath ih nirabhai giravaavain ||29||

[These Singhs] are tossing bones in my house without any fear!” ||29||

ਤਬਹਿ ਗੁਲਾਬ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਡਰਿ ਤਿਨ ਢਿਗ ਕਰ ਜੋਰੇ ।

tabeh gulaab panjaab ddar tin dtig kar jore

Then Gulaba and Punjaba folded their hands in front of him, in fear.

ਕਰਹੁ ਛਿਮਾ ਤੁਮ ਆਜ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਗਮਨੈਂ ਭੋਰੇ ।

karahu chhimaa tum aaj kee ih gamanain bhore

“Please forgive us for today, [the Singhs] will leave in the morning.

ਸਦਾ ਪੜੋਸੀ ਬਸਹੁ ਢਿਗ ਇਹ ਕਰਹੁ ਅਸਾਨਾ ।

sadaa parrosee basahu dtig ih karahu asaanaa

Neighbours must forever live amongst each other;

ਹਮ ਅਧੀਨ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਰਹੈਂ ਰਹੁ ਪੀਰ ਮਹਾਨਾ ॥੩੦॥

ham adheen tumare rahain rahu peer mahaanaa ||30||

We shall always live subordinate to you; you are a great saint.” ||30||

ਨਹਿਂ ਬਰਜੇ ਤੇ ਜਬਿ ਹਟੇ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਹਰ ਬਗਾਈ ।

nahin baraje te jab hatte gur muhar bagaaee

When [the Sayyid] did not stop after these prohibitions, Guru Ji tossed some gold coins.

ਪਰੀ ਸਦਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਬੀਨਤਿ ਸਮੁਦਾਈ ।

paree sadan mahin dekh kai beenat samudaaee

Seeing [the coins] fall in his home, [the Sayyid] picked them all up.

ਅਧਿਕ ਦਰਬ ਕੇ ਲੋਭ ਮਹਿਂ ਲੇ ਤੂਸ਼ਨਿ ਹੋਏ ।

adhik darab ke lobh mahin le tooshan hoe

In an immense greed for wealth, he became silent.

ਨਹਿਂ ਉਕਸੇ ਬੋਲੇ ਨ ਪੁਨ ਪਰਿ ਘਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਸੋਏ ॥੩੧॥

nahin ukase bole na pun par ghar mahin soe ||31||

He no longer felt agitated and did not speak; he then went to sleep in his house. ||31||

ਇੱਤ੍ਯਾਦਿਕ ਕਹਿ ਲੋਭ ਦੇ ਰਿਸ ਤਿਨਹੁਂ ਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ।

eitayaadik keh lobh de ris tinahun binaashee

In this way, giving him greed, they got rid of his anger.

ਘਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਬਰ ਮਸਲਤ ਕਰੀ ਨਰ ਨਾਰਿਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਾਸੀ ।

ghar mahin bar masalat karee nar naarin traasee

The men and women in Gulaba’s house, in fear, consulted each other.

ਬਡੀ ਨਿਸਾ ਤੇ ਆਜ ਉਠਿ ਗੁਰ ਰੁਖਸਦ ਕੀਜੈ ।

baddee nisaa te aaj utth gur rukhasad keejai

“With the long night still remaining, we shall bid Guru Ji farewell.

ਛਪੇ ਰਹੈਂ ਨਹਿਂ ਡਰ ਰਹੈਂ ਤੁਮ ਆਪ ਬਚੀਜੈ ॥੩੨॥

chhape rahain nahin ddar rahain tum aap bacheejai ||32||

Neither do they live in hiding, nor do they have any fear, we must save ourselves.” ||32||

ਇੱਤ੍ਯਾਦਿਕ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਗਿਨੀ ਸਭਿ ਧੀਰਜ ਖੋਈ ।

eitayaadik ginatee ginee sabh dheeraj khoee

In this way, repeatedly counting, everyone forsook their patience.

ਦੇਤਿ ਕਸੌਟੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਸਹਿ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ।

det kasauattee guroo jee seh sakai na koee

Whatever ordeals Guru Ji bring, nobody is able to endure them.

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਛਕਿ ਲੀਨ ਤਬਿ ਜਲ ਪਾਨ ਪਖਾਰੈ ।

gur prasaad chhak leen tab jal paan pakhaarai

When Guru Ji finished partaking in the Prasad and washed their hands and feet,

ਥਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਯੰਕ ਪਰ ਗੁਰ ਭਏ ਕਿਸ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਨ ਧਾਰੇ ॥੩੩॥

thik prayank par gur bhe kis traas na dhaare ||33||

Guru Ji then sat upon the cot, not embodying fear in any way. ||33||
