ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਝੂਠਾਨੰਦ ਤਬਿ ਕਹਿ ਨਬਾਬ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ।

khatree jhootthaanand tab keh nabaab ke saath

"The Kẖaṯrī Jẖūṯẖā Nand (epithet of Sucha Nand) then said to the Governor:

ਦੇਖਹੁ ਕਿਮ ਇਹ ਬੋਲਤੇ ਡਰਤਿ ਨ ਜੋਰਤਿ ਹਾਥ ॥੧॥

dekhahu kim ih bolate ddarat na jorat haath ||1||

"Look at how they speak; they do not fold their hands in fear. ||1||

ਬਡੇ ਹੋਇਂਗੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਮਾਨਾ ।

badde hoeinge pitaa samaanaa

When they grow older, they will become like their father—

ਲਾਖਹੁਂ ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਕੀਨਸਿ ਹਾਨਾ ।

laakhahun lashakar keenas haanaa

who has obliterated an army numbering in the millions.

ਨਿਤ ਊਧਮ ਕੋ ਦੇਸ਼ ਉਠਾਵੈਂ ।

nit aoodham ko desh utthaavain

They will forever raise turmoil within the entire nation;

ਏਹ ਨਹਿਂ ਕ੍ਯੋਂਹੂੰ ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਵੈਂ ॥੨॥

eeh nahin kayonhoon sees nivaavain ||2||

in no way at all will they will bow their heads. ||2||

ਅਬਿ ਪਕਰੇ ਬਸ ਆਇ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ।

ab pakare bas aae tumaare

Now they have been captured and are under your authority;

ਛੂਟ ਨ ਜਾਹਿਂ ਮਵਾਸ ਮਝਾਰੇ ।

chhoott na jaahin mavaas majhaare

They must not be let free, or they will go to a place of dissidence.

ਇਨ ਕੋ ਅਪਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਪਚਾਰੂ ।

ein ko apar naheen upachaaroo

There remains no other solution [for these two children];

ਕਰੋ ਹੁਕਮ ਕਿਹ ਕਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੂ ॥੩॥

karo hukam kih karai prahaaroo ||3||

Give someone a command and have them killed." ||3||

ਹੁਤੇ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿਂ ਖਾਨ ਮਲੇਰੀ ।

hute sabhaa mahin khaan maleree

Within the assembly, there was a Khan from Malerkotla.

ਹਤਹਿ ਜਾਨਿ ਬੋਲੇ ਤਿਸ ਬੇਰੀ ।

hateh jaan bole tis beree

Knowing that the Governor will kill the children, he says:

ਬਾਲਕ ਸ਼ੀਰ ਖੋਰ ਕ੍ਯਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ।

baalak sheer khor kayaa dosh

"What is the blame of these milk-drinking children?

ਹਾਨ ਲਾਭ ਕੀ ਇਨਹਿ ਨ ਹੋਸ਼ ॥੪॥

haan laabh kee ineh na hosh ||4||

They have no understanding of their benefit or loss." ||4||

ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਪੀ ਤਬਿ ਏਵ ਨਵਾਬ ।

When the sinful Governor heard this response,

ਇਤ ਉਤ ਦੇਖਨ ਲਗ੍ਯੋ ਸ਼ਤਾਬ ।

eit ut dekhan lagayo shataab

he hastily began to look from side to side.

ਜੇ ਨਰ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਕਿਨਹੁਂ ਨ ਮਾਨੀ ।

je nar sanamukh kinahun na maanee

The men sitting in front were all in disagreement:

ਹਮ ਤੇ ਬਾਲਕ ਹੋਇਂ ਨ ਹਾਨੀ ॥੫॥

ham te baalak hoein na haanee ||5||

"We will not be able to have these children killed." ||5||

ਬਹੁਰ ਦਾਹਿਨੀ ਦਿਸ਼ ਜਬਿ ਹੇਰਾ ।

bahur daahinee dish jab heraa

Then, as the Governor looked to his right,

ਨੀਵ ਗ੍ਰੀਵ ਕਰਿ ਥਿਰ ਤਿਸ ਬੇਰਾ ।

neev greev kar thir tis beraa

everyone sat with their heads down in shame.

ਬਾਮੇ ਦਿਸ਼ ਤਬਿ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਿ ਚਲਾਈ ।

baame dish tab drishatt chalaaee

Then the Governor began to look to his left;

ਨਹਿਂ ਕਿਨ ਮਾਨੀ ਗਿਰਾ ਅਲਾਈ ॥੬॥

nahin kin maanee giraa alaaee ||6||

neither did they agree, nor did they speak. ||6||

ਪਾਛਲ ਦਿਸ਼ਿ ਖਲ ਬਾਂਛਤ ਬੇਗ ।

paachhal dish khal baanchhat beg

The foolish Governor quickly looked backwards;

ਗਿਲਜਾ ਪਸ਼ਚਮ ਕੋ ਯੁਤਿ ਬੇਗ ।

gilajaa pashacham ko yut beg

He sees a strong Giljā from the East, to whom he says:

ਲਿਹੁ ਬਾਲਕ ਇਤ ਦਿਸ਼ ਮਹਿਂ ਹੋਇ ।

lihu baalak it dish mahin hoe

"Take these [two] children and go aside;

ਧਰ ਤੇ ਜੁਦੇ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਿਰ ਦੋਇ ॥੭॥

dhar te jude karahu sir doe ||7||

Separate both their heads from their bodies. ||7||

ਰਾਖਨ ਕੀ ਲਾਯਕ ਇਹ ਨਾਂਹੀ ।

raakhan kee laayak ih naanhee

They are not worthy enough to keep [alive];

ਪਾਇਂ ਫਤੂਰ ਦੇਸ਼ ਕੇ ਮਾਂਹੀ ।

paaein fatoor desh ke maanhee

they will cause great disorder within the nation."

ਸੁਨਿ ਗਿਲਜਾ ਤਬਿ ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਗਯੋ ।

sun gilajaa tab le kar gayo

Hearing this, the Giljā took them and left;

ਓਟ ਸਭਾ ਕੇ ਹੋਵਤਿ ਭਯੋ ॥੮॥

ott sabhaa ke hovat bhayo ||8||

he went to a place concealed from the assembly. ||8||

ਪਾਪੀ ਨਿਰਦ੍ਯਾਲੂ ਮਤਿ ਮੰਦ ।

paapee niradayaaloo mat mand

The ill-mannered, compassion-lacking sinner,

ਗਹਿ ਖੈਂਚੀ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੇਰ ਬਿਲੰਦ ।

geh khainchee shamasher biland

then pulled out his large sword from its scabbard.

ਧੀਰਜ ਧਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਤ ਖਰੇ ।

dheeraj dhare guroo sut khare

The Gurū's sons stand, embodying fortitude;

ਨਹੀਂ ਦੀਨ ਮਨ ਕੈ ਸਿਹੁਂ ਕਰੇ ॥੯॥

naheen deen man kai sihun kare ||9||

they do not accept the Ḏīn in any way. ||9||

ਧਰਮ ਹੇਤ ਸਿਰ ਚਾਹਤਿ ਦੀਯੋ ।

dharam het sir chaahat deeyo

They wished to sacrifice their heads for Ḏẖaram;

ਤੁਰਕਨਿ ਜਰਾਂ ਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ਕੀਯੋ ।

turakan jaraan binaashee keeyo

they will destroy the roots of the Turks' Empire.

ਸਿਮਰਹਿਂ ਬਾਤ ਪਿਤਾਮੇ ਕੇਰੀ ।

simarahin baat pitaame keree

They contemplate the sacrifice of their grandfather;

ਲਾਜ ਬੰਸ ਕੀ ਚਹੈਂ ਬਡੇਰੀ ॥੧੦॥

laaj bans kee chahain badderee ||10||

they wish to protect to the honour of their dynasty. ||10||

ਅਧਮ ਤਬੈ ਤਰਵਾਰ ਚਲਾਈ ।

adham tabai taravaar chalaaee

The grave sinner then struck with his sword;

ਸਿਰ ਜੁਝਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਯੋ ਗਿਰਾਈ ।

sir jujhaar singh dayo giraaee

he caused to fall, the head of Zorawar Singh.

ਬਹੁਰ ਦੂਸਰੋ ਵਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਾ ।

bahur doosaro vaar prahaaraa

Then, he proceeded with a second blow;

ਫਤੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੋ ਸੀਸ ਉਤਾਰਾ ॥੧੧॥

fate singh ko sees utaaraa ||11||

he took off the head of Fateh Singh. ||11||

ਹਾਹਾਕਾਰ ਜਹਾਂ ਕਹਿਂ ਭਯੋ ।

haahaakaar jahaan kahin bhayo

Here and there, great lamentation ensued;

ਜੈ ਜੈ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਰਨਿ ਮਹਿਂ ਥਿਯੋ ।

jai jai shabad suran mahin thiyo

Words of "Hail, Hail" resounded from the gods.

ਧੰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਤ ਧੀਰਜ ਧਾਰੀ ।

dhan guroo sut dheeraj dhaaree

The Gurū's blest sons have embodied fortitude;

ਧਰਮ ਹੇਤ ਸਿਰ ਦਿਯੋ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥੧੨॥

dharam het sir diyo utaaree ||12||

for Ḏẖaram, they have had their heads removed. ||12||

ਅਲਪ ਆਰਬਲ ਪਕਰੇ ਹੋਏ ।

alap aarabal pakare hoe

They were imprisoned at such a young age;

ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹਤਾ ਅਪਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਇਮ ਕੋਏ ।

drirrhataa apar kareh im koe

who else can have such resoluteness as them?

ਤੁਰਕਨ ਜਰਾਂ ਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ।

turakan jaraan binaasee kar kai

In order to pull the roots of the Turks' reign;

ਗਏ ਗੁਰੂ ਪੁਰਿ ਆਨਂਦ ਧਰਿ ਕੈ ॥੧੩॥

ge guroo pur aanand dhar kai ||13||

blissfully, they have gone to the Gurū's abode. ||13||

ਕਰੇ ਕਲੰਕਤਿ ਰਿਪੁ ਕੁਲ ਸਾਰੇ ।

kare kalankat rip kul saare

They have stigmatized all the enemy dynasties,

ਰਾਜ ਤੇਜ ਕੋ ਛੀਨਸਿ ਸਾਰੇ ।

raaj tej ko chheenas saare

whilst seizing away all of their empire and glory.

ਤਿਸ ਛੀਨ ਤੁਰਕ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਤਹਿਂ ਝਾਰੀ ।

tis chheen turak hindoo tahin jhaaree

At that time, all the Hiʼnḏūs and Turks in court,

ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਕੋ ਬਹੁ ਦੇਵਤਿ ਗਾਰੀ ॥੧੪॥

khatree ko bahu devat gaaree ||14||

were giving many insults to the Kẖaṯrī [Sucha Nand]: ||14||

ਇਹ ਦੋਖੀ ਹੈ ਬਡੋ ਚੰਡਾਲਾ ।

eih dokhee hai baddo chanddaalaa

"This evil-doer is a merciless low-born;

ਦੇਖੇ ਬਾਲਿਕ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਕਰਾਲਾ ।

dekhe baalik kehayo karaalaa

seeing the children, he spoke dreadfully."

ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਹਾਕਾਰੇ ।

sikh sangat kar haahaakaare

The whole Sikh congregation lamented;

ਜਾਨੀ ਤੁਰਕਨ ਜਰਾਂ ਉਪਾਰੇ ॥੧੫॥

jaanee turakan jaraan upaare ||15||

knowing that the Turks will be uprooted. ||15||

ਇਕ ਸਿਖ ਟੋਡਰ ਮਲ ਬਹੁ ਧਨੀ ।

eik sikh ttoddar mal bahu dhanee

There was a very wealthy Sikh named Todar Mal.

ਸਾਹਿਬਜ਼ਾਦੇ ਪਕਰਨਿ ਸੁਨੀ ।

saahibazaade pakaran sunee

As he learnt that the sāhibazādās had been captured;

ਰਿਦੈ ਬਿਚਾਰ੍ਯੋ ਧਨ ਗਨ ਦੈ ਕੈ ।

ridai bichaarayo dhan gan dai kai

he discussed within his mind: "I will offer lots of money;

ਤੁਰਕਨਿ ਤੇ ਛੁਰਵਾਵਨਿ ਕੈ ਕੈ ॥੧੬॥

turakan te chhuravaavan kai kai ||16||

I will release them from the captivity of the Turks. ||16||

ਜਹਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਤਹਿਂ ਦੇਉ ਪੁਚਾਈ ।

jahaan guroo tahin deo puchaaee

I shall return them to wherever the Gurū remains;

ਪਾਵੌਂ ਜਗਤ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਡਿਆਈ ।

paavauan jagat bikhai baddiaaee

I will obtain great glory and praise in this world.

ਕਹਾਂ ਦਰਬ ਜੋ ਸਰਬ ਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ।

kahaan darab jo sarab binaashee

Why worry about money, which will all perish?

ਗੁਰ ਪਦਵੀ ਦੈ ਹੈਂ ਅਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ॥੧੭॥

gur padavee dai hain abinaashee ||17||

The Gurū will bestow an imperishable status upon me." ||17||

ਕਰਤਿ ਉਤਾਇਲ ਕੇ ਚਲਿ ਆਵਾ ।

karat utaaeil ke chal aavaa

He began to walk in great steadfastness;

ਸਭਾ ਬਿਖੈ ਦੇਖਤਿ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਵਾ ।

sabhaa bikhai dekhat dukh paavaa

but on arriving, he obtained great sadness.

ਸੁਨੀ ਨਰਨ ਤੇ ਇਨਹੁਂ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇ ।

sunee naran te inahun prahaare

He learnt that the sons had been martyred;

ਪਰਮ ਦੁਖੀ ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿਂ ਤਿਸ ਬਾਰੇ ॥੧੮॥

param dukhee chit mahin tis baare ||18||

At that time, he felt great misery in his heart. ||18||

ਹੋਯਹੁ ਤਬਿ ਉਤਪਾਤ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ ।

hoyahu tab utapaat bisaalaa

Then, all of a sudden, a great disaster ensued;

ਕੰਪੀ ਧਰਤ ਆਇ ਭੂੰਚਾਲਾ ।

kanpee dharat aae bhoonchaalaa

the ground shook and an earthquake occurred.

ਐਂਚਤਿ ਕੰਕਰ ਧੂਰ ਘਨੇਰੀ ।

ainchat kankar dhoor ghaneree

Strong winds arose and began to form a storm;

ਬਹੀ ਬਾਯੁ ਬਹੁ ਬੇਰ ਕੁਫੇਰੀ ॥੧੯॥

bahee baay bahu ber kuferee ||19||

Dust and pebbles flew around, immensely. ||19||

ਸਭਿਹਿਨਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਚਨ ਰਜ ਪਰੀ ।

sabhihin ke lochan raj paree

Dust began to blind the eyes of all;

ਕੂਕੀ ਵਹਿਰ ਸ਼ਿਵਾ ਮੁਦ ਭਰੀ ।

kookee vahir shivaa mud bharee

the jackals outside were howling in joy.

ਬਿਨ ਘਨ ਗਰਜ ਗਗਨ ਤੇ ਸੁਨੀ ।

bin ghan garaj gagan te sunee

Thunder was audible without any clouds;

ਸਭਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਤਿ ਮੁੰਡੀ ਧੁਨੀ ॥੨੦॥

sabh pachhutaavat munddee dhunee ||20||

everyone shook their head in dismay. ||20||

ਜੋ ਸ੍ਯਾਨੇ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਰੈਂ ਬਿਚਾਰਨਿ ।

jo sayaane budh karain bichaaran

Some knowledgeable people then spoke;

ਬਯੋ ਕਹਿਰ ਬਡ ਕਰਤਿ ਉਚਾਰਨ ।

bayo kahir badd karat uchaaran

they say that a great calamity has occurred.

ਉਠੈ ਉਪੱਦ੍ਰਵ ਰਾਜ ਬਿਧੁੰਸੈ ।

autthai upadrav raaj bidhunsai

rebellions will arise; the empire will die out.

ਹੋਇਂ ਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ਤੁਰਕ ਨਿਸੰਸੈ ॥੨੧॥

hoein binaashee turak nisansai ||21||

Without doubt, the Turks will be destroyed. ||21||

ਸਕਲ ਕੁਕਰਮ ਕੁਲੱਛਨ ਹੇਰੇ ।

sakal kukaram kulachhan here

On learning of all the acts of wickedness;

ਟੋਡਰ ਮੱਲ ਹੁਇ ਦੁਖੀ ਘਨੇਰੇ ।

ttoddar mal hue dukhee ghanere

Todar Mal was in a state of great suffering.

ਗਮਨ੍ਯੋ ਤੁਰਤ ਮਾਤ ਜਹਿਂ ਬੈਸੀ ।

gamanayo turat maat jahin baisee

He immediately then approached Māṯā Ji;

ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਸਿ ਥਿਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਜੈਸੀ ॥੨੨॥

chintaa bas thir moorat jaisee ||22||

who, in distress, are sitting still like an idol. ||22||

ਕਰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਖਨ ਪੌਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੇਰੀ ।

karat prateekhan pauatran keree

She was waiting for her grandsons—

ਸਭਾ ਬਿਖੈ ਤੇ ਆਵਹਿਂ ਫੇਰੀ ।

sabhaa bikhai te aavahin feree

that they would return from the assembly;

ਰਹੈਂ ਕੈਦ ਕਿਸ ਬਿਧਿ ਛੁਟਿ ਜੈ ਹੈਂ ।

rahain kaid kis bidh chhutt jai hain

in some way, they will be released from captivity,

ਜੀਵਤਿ ਪੁਨ ਸਭਿ ਹੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਪੈ ਹੈਂ ॥੨੩॥

jeevat pun sabh hoon sukh pai hain ||23||

and remain alive to obtain all forms of comfort. ||23||

ਅਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਯ ਮਨ ਕੇ ਛੋਰਿ ਇਕੇਲੀ ।

at priy man ke chhor ikelee

She had sent her beloveds, and was sitting alone;

ਗਏ ਤੁਰਕ ਜਹਿਂ ਸਭਾ ਸਕੇਲੀ ।

ge turak jahin sabhaa sakelee

they had gone to where the Turks held assembly.

ਅਬਿ ਐ ਹੈਂ ਬੀਤ੍ਯੋ ਚਿਰਕਾਲ ।

ab ai hain beetayo chirakaal

[Perhaps] now they will come; a long time has passed.

ਇਮ ਮਾਤਾ ਚਿਤ ਚਿੰਤ ਬਿਸਾਲ ॥੨੪॥

eim maataa chit chint bisaal ||24||

In this way, Māṯā Ji had great worry in her heart. ||24||

ਇਤਨੇ ਮਹਿਂ ਟੋਡਰਮਲ ਗਯੋ ।

eitane mahin ttoddaramal gayo

In this time, Todar Mal had arrived;

ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਪਗ ਬੰਦਤਿ ਭਯੋ ।

haath jor pag bandat bhayo

folding his hands, he fell to her feet.

ਬਿਹਬਲ ਅੱਸ੍ਵਨ ਬਦਨ ਪਖਾਰਾ ।

bihabal asvan badan pakhaaraa

His face had been washed by his tears.

ਰੁਕ੍ਯੋ ਕੰਠ ਨਹਿਂ ਜਾਇ ਉਚਾਰਾ ॥੨੫॥

rukayo kantth nahin jaae uchaaraa ||25||

from agony, he was not able to speak. ||25||

ਦੇਖਿ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਦੁਖਵਾਰੀ ।

dekh dashaa tis kee dukhavaaree

Upon seeing his sorrowful face,

ਉਠ੍ਯੋ ਹੌਲ ਉਰ ਮਾਤ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ।

autthayo haual ur maat bichaaree

Māṯā Ji's heart sinks—she asks:

ਕਹੁ ਭਾਈ ਤੂੰ ਆਯੋ ਕੌਨ ।

kahu bhaaee toon aayo kauan

"Dear brother, who are you?

ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਅਤਿ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੇਤੁ ਕਹੁ ਤੌਨ ॥੨੬॥

kayon at dukhee het kahu tauan ||26||

Why are you in such distress, and for whom?" ||26||

ਕ੍ਯਾ ਬੂਝਤਿ ਬੈਠੀ ਅਬਿ ਮਾਤ ।

kayaa boojhat baitthee ab maat

"O Māṯā Ji, what is this that you ask me?

ਮਰਤਿ ਪਿਖੇ ਮੈਂ ਦ੍ਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਤਾਤ ।

marat pikhe main dvai gur taat

I have seen both the Gurū's sons get killed.

ਜੀਵਤਿ ਰਹ੍ਯੋ ਫਟੀ ਨਹਿਂ ਛਾਤੀ ।

jeevat rehayo fattee nahin chhaatee

I remain alive; how has my chest not burst?

ਮੋ ਤੇ ਕੋਮਲ ਪਾਹਨ ਜਾਤੀ ॥੨੭॥

mo te komal paahan jaatee ||27||

Even stones are more delicate than I am. ||27||

ਮੈਂ ਨਿਰਭਾਗ ਬਤਾਵਨ ਆਯੋ ।

main nirabhaag bataavan aayo

I am very ill-fated, that I have come to tell you;

ਨਹਿਂ ਗੁਰ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰਨਿ ਸੰਗ ਸਿਧਾਯੋ ।

nahin gur putran sang sidhaayo

why have I not gone along with the Gurū's sons?

ਘਰ ਕੋ ਦਰਬ ਸਰਬ ਮੈਂ ਦੇਤਿ ।

ghar ko darab sarab main det

I would have given up all the wealth of my house;

ਜ੍ਯੋਂ ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਕਰਿ ਬਚਾਇ ਸੋ ਲੇਤਿ ॥੨੮॥

jayon kayon kar bachaae so let ||28||

in any possible way, I would have saved them. ||28||

ਕ੍ਯਾ ਮੈਂ ਕਰਉਂ ਬਤਾਵਨ ਕੋਈ ।

kayaa main kraun bataavan koee

Now what would I tell anyone else;

ਨਹਿਂ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਮਮ ਸਾਬਤ ਹੋਈ ।

nahin sikhee mam saabat hoee

I have not been able to prove my Sikhi."

ਸੁਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਬਾਕ ਖਰ ਬਾਨ ਸਮਾਨ ।

sunayon baak khar baan samaan

Māṯā Ji heard his arrow-like words;

ਲਗ੍ਯੋ ਕਾਨ ਵਿੰਧ ਰਿਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ॥੨੯॥

lagayo kaan vindh ridaa nishaan ||29||

which penetrated her in her heart. ||29||

ਊਪਰ ਤਰ ਕੇ ਜੁਟਿ ਗਏ ਰਦਨੰ ।

aoopar tar ke jutt ge radanan

Both sets of Māṯā Ji's teeth locked together;

ਭਯੋ ਦਰਦ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਰਦ ਸੁ ਬਦਨੰ ।

bhayo darad te zarad su badanan

her face had become yellow with pain.

ਖੁਸ਼ਕ ਹੋਇ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੁ ਸੁ ਲਾਟੀ ।

khushak hoe mukh laag su laattee

Her mouth dried up and closed itself;

ਜਨੁ ਕਦਲੀ ਤਰੁ ਕੀ ਜੜ ਕਾਟੀ ॥੩੦॥

jan kadalee tar kee jarr kaattee ||30||

as if someone had cut a plantain's roots. ||30||

ਤਰਫਰਾਤਿ ਮੁਰਛਾ ਕੇ ਪਾਈ ।

tarafaraat murachhaa ke paaee

Whilst suffering, she became unconscious;

ਗਿਰੀ ਬਿਸੁਧ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਸੁਧਿ ਨਹਿਂ ਕਾਈ ।

giree bisudh hvai sudh nahin kaaee

in comatose, she fell, and did not awaken.

ਤਬਿ ਟੋਡਰਮਲ ਦੁਖਿ ਅਤਿਯੰਤਾ ।

tab ttoddaramal dukh atiyantaa

Upon this, Todar Mal was in more distress.

ਕਰਿ ਬੈਠੀ ਗੁਰ ਮਾਤ ਤੁਰੰਤਾ ॥੩੧॥

kar baitthee gur maat turantaa ||31||

He immediately then sat the Gurū's mother back up. ||31||

ਬਾਯੁ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਕਰੀ ਝੁਲਾਵਨ ।

baay basatr te karee jhulaavan

Using a cloth, he fanned air to her;

ਤਬਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਤਨ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ ਪਾਵਨ ।

tab keenee tan kee sudh paavan

she slowly regained her consciousness.

ਚੇਤਨਤਾ ਜੁਤਿ ਪੁਨ ਚਿਤ ਆਏ ।

chetanataa jut pun chit aae

She began remembering her grandsons:

ਕਹਾਂ ਪੌਤ੍ਰ ਨਹਿਂ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਆਏ ॥੩੨॥

kahaan pauatr nahin drishattee aae ||32||

Where are you? You are not in my sight. ||32||

ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਜੁਝਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਲਿਹੁ ਨਾਲੇ ।

putr jujhaar singh lihu naale

O Zorawar Singh, take me along with you;

ਮੁਝ ਤੇ ਪੂਰਬ ਤੁਮ ਕਿਤ ਚਾਲੇ ।

mujh te poorab tum kit chaale

where are you both going without me?

ਕਹਾਂ ਇਕਾਕੀ ਮੈਂ ਰਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਹੌਂ ।

kahaan ikaakee main reh kar hauan

How will I live without your presence?

ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਮੈਂ ਤੂਰਨ ਮਰਿ ਹੌਂ ॥੩੩॥

eis prakaar main tooran mar hauan ||33||

In this state, I will not live much longer. ||33||

ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਅਛੇਰਾ ।

je toon hain gur sikh achheraa

If you are a proper Sikh of the Gurū,

ਕਰਿ ਉਪਚਾਰ ਮਰਣ ਕੋ ਮੇਰਾ ।

kar upachaar maran ko meraa

then you must find a way for me to die.

ਜੁਗ ਪੌਤ੍ਰਨਿ ਸੰਗ ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਮਿਲੌਂ ।

jug pauatran sang jis te milauan

In any way, I must meet my grandsons;

ਅਪਨੇ ਸਾਥ ਲਿਏ ਕਰਿ ਚਲੌਂ ॥੩੪॥

apane saath lie kar chalauan ||34||

then, along with them, I shall go as well." ||34||

ਇਮ ਕਹਿਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਲਖਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਰਾ ।

eim kahite dukh lakh kar bhaaraa

Upon saying this, in great distress;

ਬੁਰਜ ਸਾਥ ਬਲ ਤੇ ਸਿਰ ਮਾਰਾ ।

buraj saath bal te sir maaraa

Māṯā Ji hit her head against a pillar.

ਸਹਿ ਨ ਸਕ੍ਯੋ ਟੋਡਰਮਲ ਹਰਿ ।

seh na sakayo ttoddaramal har

Todar Mal could not tolerate seeing this;

ਗਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਬੈਠ੍ਯੋ ਮਾਤਾ ਫੇਰ ॥੩੫॥

gar kar baitthayo maataa fer ||35||

He sat whilst holding Māṯā Ji in his arms. ||35||

ਮਸਤਕ ਭਗਨ ਰੁਧਰ ਬਹੁ ਬਹਯੋ ।

masatak bhagan rudhar bahu bahayo

Her forehead had torn open; blood was flowing.

ਬ੍ਯਾਕੁਲ ਤੇ ਬ੍ਯਾਕੁਲ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਯੋ ।

bayaakul te bayaakul hvai gayo

Seeing Māṯā Ji, Todar Mal was emotionally perturbed.

ਮੋਹਿ ਛਾਪ ਮਹਿਂ ਹੀਰੇ ਕਣੀ ।

mohi chhaap mahin heere kanee

"Embedded in my ring, is a piece of a diamond;

ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਦੇਉਂ ਅਵੱਗ੍ਯਾ ਘਣੀ ॥੩੬॥

je main deaun avagayaa ghanee ||36||

if I feed you this diamond, it would not be righteous. ||36||

ਜੇ ਨਹਿਂ ਦੇਉਂ ਮਹਾਂ ਦੁਖ ਸਹਿ ਹੈ ।

je nahin deaun mahaan dukh seh hai

But if I do not do so, you will suffer in pain;

ਚਿਰੰਕਾਲ ਤੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਪੈ ਹੈ ।

chirankaal te mrit ko pai hai

you will have a slow and agonizing death."

ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਮਾਤ ਤੁਹਿ ਦੋਸ਼ ਨ ਕੋਈ ।

kehayo maat tuhi dosh na koee

Māṯā Ji said: "You will not be one to blame;

ਦਿਹੁ ਹੀਰਾ ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੩੭॥

dihu heeraa jis te mrit hoee ||37||

give us the diamond which will cause our death." ||37||

ਤਬਿ ਟੋਡਰਮਲ ਰਿਦੇ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ।

tab ttoddaramal ride bichaaraa

Then, upon constant rethinking,

ਹੀਰਾ ਤਤਛਿਨ ਛਾਪ ਨਿਕਾਰਾ ।

heeraa tatachhin chhaap nikaaraa

he took the diamond from the ring;

ਦੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਕੋ ਬਦਨ ਪਵਾਯੋ ।

de maataa ko badan pavaayo

he placed it within Māṯā Ji's mouth,

ਮਹਾਂ ਦੁਖਤਿ ਨੇ ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਖਾਯੋ ॥੩੮॥

mahaan dukhat ne le kar khaayo ||38||

and in great sorrow, she swallowed it. ||38||

ਕਿਤਿਕ ਕਾਲ ਮਹਿਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨਿਕਾਰੇ ।

kitik kaal mahin praan nikaare

After some time, her breathing had stopped;

ਮਿਲਿ ਪੌਤ੍ਰਨਿ ਗੁਰਪੁਰੀ ਪਧਾਰੇ ।

mil pauatran gurapuree padhaare

With her grandsons, she went to heavenly abode.

ਤੀਨਹੁਂ ਤਨ ਟੋਡਰ ਸਸਕਾਰੇ ।

teenahun tan ttoddar sasakaare

Todar Mal then cremated the bodies of all three;

ਚੁਨੇ ਪੁਸ਼ਪ ਬਾਸਨ ਨਹਿਂ ਡਾਰੇ ॥੩੯॥

chune pushap baasan nahin ddaare ||39||

he gathered the ashes and placed them in a vessel. ||39||

ਸਭਿ ਸਿੱਖਨਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਤਹਾਂ ਦਬਾਏ ।

sabh sikhan mil tahaan dabaae

Then, all the Sikhs joined and buried them."

ਇਮ ਮਾਹੀ ਸਭਿ ਗਾਥ ਸੁਨਾਏ ।

eim maahee sabh gaath sunaae

In this way, Māhī concludes and says:

ਸੁਨਹੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਸਕਲ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ।

sunahu guroo jee sakal prasang

"O Gurū Ji! listen to the entire narrative;

ਇਕ ਸਿਖ ਨੇ ਭਾਖ੍ਯੋ ਮੁਝ ਸੰਗ ॥੪੦॥

eik sikh ne bhaakhayo mujh sang ||40||

a Sikh has told me this entire occurrence. ||40||

ਸੋ ਮੈਂ ਰਾਵਰਿ ਪਾਸ ਬਤਾਵਾ ।

so main raavar paas bataavaa

I have narrated the entire anecdote to thee.

ਦਿਜ ਕੀ ਸੁਨਹੁਂ ਜਥਾ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਾ ।

dij kee sunahun jathaa fal paavaa

Now listen to what happened of Gangū Brahmin;

ਤੁਰਕਨ ਸੁਨੀ ਰਹ੍ਯੋ ਧਨ ਇਸ ਕੇ ।

turakan sunee rehayo dhan is ke

the Turks learnt he had taken money from Māṯā Ji.

ਧਾਇ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਗਮਨੇ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ॥੪੧॥

dhaae sipaahee gamane tis ke ||41||

they sent soldiers, who went inside of his house. ||41||

ਸਕਲ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਕਰਿ ਆਨਾ ।

sakal kuttanb baandh kar aanaa

They tied him up along with his entire family;

ਦਈ ਸਜ਼ਾਇ ਮਾਰ ਕਰਿ ਨਾਨਾ ।

dee sazaae maar kar naanaa

upon giving them beatings, they punished them.

ਜਿਹ ਥਲ ਤਿਹ ਦੀਨਾਰ ਦਬਾਈ ।

jih thal tih deenaar dabaaee

The place where he had buried the gold coins—

ਰਹ੍ਯੋ ਖੋਜ ਸੋ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਆਈ ॥੪੨॥

rehayo khoj so haath na aaee ||42||

upon searching there, they could not find them. ||42||

ਮਾਰੀਂਦਾ ਤੁਰਕਨ ਤੇ ਮਰਿਓ ।

maareendaa turakan te mario

Then, he died from the beatings of the Turks;

ਤਾਤਕਾਲ ਫਲ ਭੋਗਨਿ ਕਰਿਓ ।

taatakaal fal bhogan kario

he immediately earned the fruits of his labour."

ਤਬਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਯੰਕੈ ਥਿਰੇ ।

tab satiguroo prayankai thire

At this time, the Saṯigurū sat upon His cot;

ਦੋਨਹੁਂ ਚਰਨ ਧਰਾ ਪਰ ਧਰੇ ॥੪੩॥

donahun charan dharaa par dhare ||43||

He had placed both His feet upon the ground. ||43||

ਬੂਟ ਖਰੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਹੇਰੇ ।

boott kharo kaahoo ko here

Then, He spotted a Kāhī [plant],

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਜਰ ਕੋ ਖਨਹਿਂ ਘਨੇਰੇ ।

tis kee jar ko khanahin ghanere

and ripped the plant out by its roots.

ਕਰਦ ਹਾਥ ਮਹਿਂ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰੇ ।

karad haath mahin dhaaran kare

In His hand, He held a small Kirpān;

ਸਗਲ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਸੁਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਚਿਤ ਧਰੇ ॥੪੪॥

sagal prasang sunayon chit dhare ||44||

with intent, He listened to the narrative. ||44||

ਬਹੁਰ ਬੂਝਨਾ ਕੀਨਿ ਗੁਸਾਈਂ ।

bahur boojhanaa keen gusaaeen

Then, the Saṯigurū asks Noora Māhī:

ਜਹਾਂ ਸਭਾ ਤੁਰਕਨ ਸਮੁਦਾਈ ।

jahaan sabhaa turakan samudaaee

"Where the Turks had held assembly—

ਬਿਨ ਮਲੇਰੀਅਨ ਅਪਰ ਭਿ ਕੋਈ ।

bin malereean apar bhi koee

other than the chieftain of Malerkotla,

ਪਿਖਿ ਸਿਸ ਦਯਾ ਰਿਦੇ ਜਿਸ ਹੋਈ ॥੪੫॥

pikh sis dayaa ride jis hoee ||45||

did anyone else embody compassion?" ||45||

ਤਬਿ ਮਾਹੀ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਉਚਾਰਾ ।

tab maahee kar jor uchaaraa

Then, Māhī folds his hands and replies:

ਮੈਂ ਆਛੇ ਕੀਨੋ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਾ ।

main aachhe keeno niradhaaraa

"I have properly unparalleled the truth,

ਸ਼ੀਰ ਖੋਰ ਇਨ ਦੋਸ਼ ਨ ਲੇਸ਼ ।

sheer khor in dosh na lesh

Sher Khan [of Malerkotla] said, the sons had no blame;

ਏਵ ਮਲੇਰੀ ਕਹਿ ਬਿਨ ਦ੍ਵੈਸ਼ ॥੪੬॥

ev maleree keh bin dvaish ||46||

he stated this without envy in his heart." ||46||

ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਬਾਕ ਬਖਾਨਾ ।

sun kar shree gur baak bakhaanaa

Upon hearing this, the Saṯigurū states:

ਭਯੋ ਨਾਸ਼ ਅਬਿ ਸਭਿ ਤੁਰਕਾਨਾ ।

bhayo naash ab sabh turakaanaa

"Now, all the Turks will be obliterated;

ਇਕ ਮਲੇਰੀਅਨ ਕੀ ਜੜ੍ਹ ਰਹੈ ।

eik malereean kee jarrh rahai

only the Malerkotla chief shall survive.

ਅਪਰ ਤੁਰਕ ਸਭਿ ਹੀ ਜਰ ਦਹੈ ॥੪੭॥

apar turak sabh hee jar dahai ||47||

The rest of the Turks will be uprooted." ||47||

ਇਮ ਕਹਿ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਰਦ ਚਲਾਈ ।

eim keh mukh te karad chalaaee

After saying this, [the Gurū], with His blade,

ਕਾਹੂ ਬੂਟ ਜੜ ਕਾਟਿ ਗਵਾਇ ।

kaahoo boott jarr kaatt gavaae

slashed the roots of the Kāhī (plant) and said:

ਜਿਮ ਇਸ ਕੀ ਜੜ ਕਾਟਿ ਉਖਾਰੀ ।

jim is kee jarr kaatt ukhaaree

"Just as the roots of this plant have been cut,

ਤਥਾ ਤੁਰਕ ਕੀ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੪੮॥

tathaa turak kee binaseh saaree ||48||

the roots of the Turks will meet the same fate. ||48||

ਕੇਤਿਕ ਦਿਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨਾਸ਼ਾ ।

ketik din mahin hoe binaashaa

In a number of days, they will meet their end;

ਬਿਸਮਾਵੈ ਜਗ ਦੇਖਿ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ।

bisamaavai jag dekh tamaashaa

the entire world will watch the spectacle unfold."

ਦਿਯੋ ਸ੍ਰਾਪ ਗੁਰ ਕੁਪੇ ਘਨੇਰੇ ।

diyo sraap gur kupe ghanere

The Gurū, in great rage, gave the Turks this curse;

ਰਾਜ ਤੇਜ ਕੋ ਮੂਲ ਉਖੇਰੇ ॥੪੯॥

raaj tej ko mool ukhere ||49||

He pulled the Turkish empire out by the roots. ||49||

ਪੁਰਿ ਸਿਰੰ੍ਹਦ ਮਹਿਂ ਪਾਪ ਘਨੇਰਾ ।

pur siranhad mahin paap ghaneraa

"A great crime has been committed within Sirhind.

ਉਜਰ ਜਾਹਿ ਲਹਿ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਬਡੇਰਾ ।

aujar jaeh leh kashatt badderaa

The city will be destroyed; its people will suffer.

ਸਿੱਖ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਉਜਾਰਹਿਂ ।

sikh hamaare maar ujaarahin

My Sikhs will go there and cause great destruction;

ਛੀਨਿ ਰਾਜ ਧਨ ਵਹਿਰ ਨਿਕਾਰਹਿਂ ॥੫੦॥

chheen raaj dhan vahir nikaarahin ||50||

they will seize the Empire and bring out the wealth." ||50||
