Bishan Singh Advances Toward the Land of Kamarupa
ਦੋਹਰਾ
ਭਯੋ ਨੁਰੰਗਾ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਜਬਿ ਜੀਤੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਅਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ।
bhayo nurangaa shaah jab jeete desh ashesh
When Nauranga (Aurangzeb) became the emperor, he won over all other regions;
ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਬਿਸਾਲ ਜਿਨ ਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ॥੧॥
lashakar karayo bisaal jin de kar traas vishesh ||1||
He created a great army and wreaked havoc [over these lands]. ||1||
ਚੌਪਈ
ਵਹਿ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੇਰ ਕਚਹਿਰੀ ਮਾਹੂੰ ।
veh shamasher kachahiree maahoon
The [unsheathed] sword is laid out in the court,
ਧਰੀ ਰਹਹਿ ਕੋ ਗਹਹਿ ਨ ਤਾਹੂੰ ।
dharee raheh ko gaheh na taahoon
where it has remained untouched by anyone.
ਮਾਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੋ ਨਾਤੀ ਭਯੋ ।
maan singh ko naatee bhayo
Maan Singh had a grandson,
ਬਡ ਮਰਾਤਬਾ ਜਿਸ ਕੋ ਦਯੋ ॥੨॥
badd maraatabaa jis ko dayo ||2||
who was given a great tile and position by the king ||2||
ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਿਸਾਲੈ ਦਰਬ ਬਿਸਾਲ ।
desh bisaalai darab bisaal
He accumulated a great kingdom and much wealth.
ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਬਡੋ ਚਢਹਿ ਤਿਸ ਨਾਲ ।
lashakar baddo chadteh tis naal
He had a great army that travelled [everywhere] with him.
ਚਹਤਿ ਨਰੰਗਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਚਢਾਯੋ ।
chehat narangaa tisai chadtaayo
Nauranga wished for Maan Singh's grandson to conquer [Kamarupa].
ਸਾਦਰ ਦਲ ਬਲ ਦੇਤਿ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥੩॥
saadar dal bal det badtaayo ||3||
With great honour, [the emperor] rose him in ranks by giving him a strong army. ||3||
ਦਾਵ ਘਾਵ ਸੋਂ ਕਰਿ ਬਡਿਆਈ ।
daav ghaav son kar baddiaaee
With a lot of scheming, he praises [the grandson of Raja Maan Singh].
ਕਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਸੋ ਉਠਿਵਾਈ ।
keh kar tis te so utthivaaee
In this fashion, [the emperor] persuades him to pick up the sword.
ਆਦਰ ਦਰਬ ਦੀਨਿ ਬਹੁਤੇਰਾ ।
aadar darab deen bahuteraa
With great regard, he is awarded a plenitude of money,
ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਪਿਛਾਰੀ ਕਟਕ ਘਨੇਰਾ ॥੪॥
karayo pichhaaree kattak ghaneraa ||4||
along with a mighty military. ||4||
ਸਦਾ ਆਫਰੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਸ਼ਾਹੂ ।
sadaa aafareen keh kai shaahoo
"Well done," says the emperor.
ਚਢਿਬੈ ਕੋ ਦੀਨਸਿ ਉਤਸਾਹੂ ।
chadtibai ko deenas utasaahoo
He is thus encouraged to march on.
ਹਟ੍ਯੋ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਕੇ ਕਹੇ ।
hattayo na jaae shaah ke kahe
He did not know how to refuse the emperor.
ਮਰਨਿ ਮਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਸੋ ਅਸਿ ਗਹੇ ॥੫॥
maran maan kai so as gahe ||5||
Consequently, he accepts death and grasps the sword. ||5||
ਰੁਖਸਦ ਹੋਇ ਸ਼ਾਹੁ ਤੇ ਚਲ੍ਯੋ ।
rukhasad hoe shaahu te chalayo
He takes leave of the emperor and is on his way.
ਆਇ ਜੋਧ ਪੁਰਿ ਸਭਿ ਸੋਂ ਮਿਲ੍ਯੋ ।
aae jodh pur sabh son milayo
He arrives in Jodhpur and meets everyone.
ਦੇਸ਼ ਕਾਵਰੂ ਕਰਨਿ ਚਢਾਈ ।
desh kaavaroo karan chadtaaee
ਜਬਿ ਅਪਨੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਸੁਨਾਈ ॥੬॥
jab apane parivaar sunaaee ||6||
When [Raja Bishan Singh] delivered this news to the family, ||6||
ਮਹਾਂ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਹੋਯਸਿ ਰਨਵਾਸੂ ।
mahaan shok hoyas ranavaasoo
the royal house was filled with sorrow.
ਰੋਦਨ ਊਚੇ ਕਰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ੂ ।
rodan aooche karat prakaashoo
The queens and princesses begin to cry aloud.
ਹਾਥਨਿ ਤਲ ਸੋਂ ਪੀਟਹਿਂ ਸਿਰ ਕੋ ।
haathan tal son peettahin sir ko
They beat their heads with their hands in grief.
ਸਕਲ ਹਿਤੂ ਰੋਦਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਿ ਸੋ ॥੭॥
sakal hitoo rodat mil kar so ||7||
All of his friends and allies cry as well. ||7||
ਭੂਪਤਿ ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੀ ਮਾਤ ।
bhoopat bishan singh kee maat
The mother of Raja Bishan Singh
ਬਿਰਲਾਪਤਿ ਊਚੇ ਬਿਲਲਾਤ ।
biralaapat aooche bilalaat
is crying and mourning aloud.
ਹੇ ਸੁਤ ਤੁਮਰੋ ਬਡੋ ਭਯੋ ਹੈ ।
he sut tumaro baddo bhayo hai
[She says,] "oh, son! You had an elder;
ਬਡ ਮਵਾਸ ਜਿਨ ਬਿਜੈ ਕਿਯੋ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
badd mavaas jin bijai kiyo hai ||8||
who conquered other rebels. ||8||
ਤੁਰਕੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਤਹਾਂ ਪਠਾਇ ।
turakeshur ne tahaan patthaae
The Turkish King had sent him off [to Kamarupa]
ਕਰਿ ਟਾਮਨ ਸੋ ਦਯੋ ਮਰਾਇ ।
kar ttaaman so dayo maraae
[where he was] killed with spells by the mystics.
ਤਿਹ ਸਮ ਤੋਹਿ ਸ਼ਕਤਿ ਨਹਿਂ ਪਈਅਤਿ ।
tih sam tohi shakat nahin peeat
You are not as powerful as him. [your grandfather, Raja Maan Singh].
ਕਿਮ ਜੀਤਹਿਂ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਖਈਅਤਿ ॥੯॥
kim jeetahin ih naheen lakheeat ||9||
How will you win? I do not understand." ||9||
ਸ਼ੋਕ ਬਿਸਾਲ ਜੋਧਪੁਰਿ ਹੋਵਾ ।
shok bisaal jodhapur hovaa
Woe betides the [city of] Jodhpur.
ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਜਨੁ ਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹੀ ਜੋਵਾ ।
bishan singh jan mrit hee jovaa
It is as if Bishan Singh is [already] considered dead.
ਜੀਵਨ ਜਤਨ ਨ ਪਾਵਤਿ ਸੋਊ ।
jeevan jatan na paavat soaoo
He is not manking any effort to save himself.
ਭਏ ਸੋਚ ਵਸ਼ਿ ਤਹਿਂ ਸਭਿ ਕੋਊ ॥੧੦॥
bhe soch vash tahin sabh koaoo ||10||
Everyone is in deep thought. ||10||
ਖਾਨ ਪਾਨ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਬਿਸਰਾਇਸਿ ।
khaan paan man te bisaraaeis
[They] forget about eating and drinking.
ਸ਼ੋਕ ਚਿੰਤ ਤੇ ਚਿਤ ਬਿਕੁਲਾਇਸਿ ।
shok chint te chit bikulaaeis
They have gone mad due to grief and anxiety.
ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੀ ਇਕ ਪਟਰਾਨੀ ।
bishan singh kee ik pattaraanee
The queen of Bishan Singh
ਕੁਛ ਗੁਰ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕੋ ਤਿਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੧੧॥
kuchh gur mahimaa ko tin jaanee ||11||
knew somewhat of the Guru and Their glory. ||11||
ਨਿਜ ਨੈਹਰ ਕੇ ਬਾਸ ਕਰੰਤੀ ।
nij naihar ke baas karantee
When she was with her parents,
ਤਹਾਂ ਰਹਤਿ ਇਹ ਸਕਲ ਸੁਨੰਤੀ ।
tahaan rehat ih sakal sunantee
she heard this story of the Guru:
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦੁਰਗ ਮਝਾਰੇ ।
shree harigobind durag majhaare
"When Sri Hargobind Ji was in the fortress (Gwalior,)
ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਬਵੰਜਾ ਵਹਿਰ ਨਿਕਾਰੇ ॥੧੨॥
nripat bavanjaa vahir nikaare ||12||
he had arranged to release the fifty-two (52) locked-up kings. ||12||
ਮਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਜੰਤ ਕੈਦ ਜਿਨ ਕੇਰੀ ।
maran prajant kaid jin keree
Those [kings] that were in jail till their death;
ਸਰਬ ਛੁਟਾਇ ਦੀਨਿ ਤਿਸ ਬੇਰੀ ।
sarab chhuttaae deen tis beree
The Guru arranged for their freedom.
ਤਬਿ ਕੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਪੂਤ ।
tab kee shree gur mahimaa poot
Since then, the great glory of the Guru
ਪਸਰੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੇਸ਼ ਰਜਪੂਤ ॥੧੩॥
pasaree bahut desh rajapoot ||13||
has spread throughout the kingdom of Rajputs. ||13||
ਕਰਾਮਾਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਵਤਾਰ ।
karaamaat saahib avataar
[The Guru] is an Avatar of great powers.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਸਿੰਧੁ ਸੁਖ ਸਭਿ ਦਾਤਾਰ ।
kripaa sindh sukh sabh daataar
They are an ocean of blessings and givers of peace!
ਅਜ਼ਮਤਿ ਸੋਂ ਤੁਰਕੇਸ਼ ਦਬਾਇਸ ।
azamat son turakesh dabaaeis
[Guru Hargobind Ji] challenged the [Mughal Empire] with great acclamation
ਸਾਦਰ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਨਰਿੰਦ ਛੁਟਾਇਸ ॥੧੪॥
saadar brind narind chhuttaaeis ||14||
and released the kings." ||14||
ਅਪਨੀ ਸਾਸ ਸੰਗ ਸਭਿ ਕਹੀ ।
apanee saas sang sabh kahee
The queen narrates [the story] to her mother-in-law.
ਗੁਰ ਸਹਾਇ ਤੇ ਭੈ ਕਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ ।
gur sahaae te bhai kit naheen
"With the Guru on your side, fear will not exist.
ਤੀਨ ਲੋਕ ਪਰ ਤਿਨਹੁਂ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ।
teen lok par tinahun prataap
[The Guru's] glory is spread throughout the three worlds."
ਸੇਵਕ ਕੇ ਹਰਿਤਾ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਤਾਪ ॥੧੫॥
sevak ke haritaa trai taap ||15||
[They] remove the three types of heat from their servants." ||15||
ਜੋ ਅਬਿ ਗਾਦੀ ਪਰ ਗੁਰ ਹੋਇ ।
jo ab gaadee par gur hoe
Whoever is presently seated on the throne of the Guru,
ਖੋਜਹੁ ਕਹਾਂ ਬਿਰਾਜਹਿਂ ਸੋਇ ।
khojahu kahaan biraajahin soe
find Their whereabouts.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸ਼ਰਨਿ ਭੂਪ ਚਲਿ ਜਾਵਹੁ ।
tin kee sharan bhoop chal jaavahu
The king [must take] refuge in Their sanctuary;
ਅਪਨਿ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਤਿਨਹੁਂ ਬਨਾਵਹੁ ॥੧੬॥
apan sahaaeik tinahun banaavahu ||16||
Moreover, make [Guru Hargobind Ji] their saviour. ||16||
ਦੇਸ਼ ਕਾਮਰੂ ਕ੍ਯਾ ਤਿਨ ਆਗੈ ।
desh kaamaroo kayaa tin aagai
What is the Kamarupa kingdom compared to [One like Guru Ji]?
ਤਿਸ ਤੈ ਸਕਲ ਸੁਰਾਸੁਰ ਭਾਗੈਂ ।
tis tai sakal suraasur bhaagain
The Gods (of heaven) and demons all run away from Them.
ਜਿਸ ਥਲ ਥਿਰਹਿਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਭਗਵਾਨ ।
jis thal thirahin guroo bhagavaan
Wherever the Guru Bhagavāna is sitting,
ਨਹਿਂ ਕਰਿ ਸਕਹਿ ਬਿਘਨ ਕੋ ਆਨ ॥੧੭॥
nahin kar sakeh bighan ko aan ||17||
nobody can disturb Their tasks. ||17||
ਪੀਰ ਮੀਰ ਸਿਧ ਨਾਥ ਮਹੰਤ ।
peer meer sidh naath mahant
Saints, elites, sidhs, yogis and mahants -
ਸਭਿ ਤੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਲਖਹੁ ਭਗਵੰਤ ।
sabh te adhik lakhahu bhagavant
[Guru Hargobind Ji] supersedes their sagacity.
ਸੁਨਤਿ ਨੁਖਾ ਕੇ ਬਾਕ ਅਮੀ ਕੋ ।
sunat nukhaa ke baak amee ko
Upon hearing her daughter-in-law's holy-nectar-like words,
ਸਾਸ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਸੀਤਲ ਨਿਜ ਹੀ ਕੋ ॥੧੮॥
saas karayo seetal nij hee ko ||18||
the mother-in-law's heart cools down. ||18||
ਸੁਤ ਸੋਂ ਸਗਰੀ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨਾਈ ।
sut son sagaree baat sunaaee
She retells the whole story to her son, [Raja Bishan Singh].
ਖੋਜਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹ੍ਵੈਂ ਜਿਸ ਥਾਈਂ ।
khojahu satigur hvain jis thaaeen
"Find the Satguru! Wherever They may be!
ਰਾਮ ਰਾਇ ਢਿਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਗੁਰਾਈ ।
raam raae dtig naheen guraaee
The Guruship is not in the house of Ram Rai.
ਅਜ਼ਮਤ ਕਰਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਦਿਖਰਾਈ ॥੧੯॥
azamat kar anek dikharaaee ||19||
[Nonetheless, Ram Rai] has revealed numerous miracles. ||19||
ਗਾਦੀ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਅਨੁਜ ਲਈ ਹੈ ।
gaadee tis ke anuj lee hai
Their younger brother received the Guruship.
ਪੁਰਿ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਤਜਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਈ ਹੈ ।
pur dilee taj dehi dee hai
They left their [physicial] body in Delhi.
ਤਿਨ ਪਾਛੇ ਗਾਦੀ ਪਰ ਜੋਈ ।
tin paachhe gaadee par joee
Whoever is presently seated on the Guru's throne,
ਅਪਨਿ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੨੦॥
apan sahaaeik keejeh soee ||20||
have Them become your saviour." ||20||
ਸੁਨਿ ਜਨਨੀ ਤੇ ਸਭਾ ਮਝਾਰੀ ।
sun jananee te sabhaa majhaaree
Listening to the whole story from his mother,
ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਆਨ ਉਚਾਰੀ ।
bishan singh ne aan uchaaree
Bishan Singh comes and tells his court members.
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਾਦੀ ਪਰ ਕੌਨ ।
shree naanak gaadee par kauan
Who is the heir to Guru Nanak's throne?
ਸੋ ਅਬਿ ਕਹਾਂ ਕਹਾਂ ਤਿਨ ਭੌਨ ॥੨੧॥
so ab kahaan kahaan tin bhauan ||21||
Where are They now, and where is Their house?" ||21||
ਸਭਾ ਬਿਖੈ ਇਕ ਮਾਨਵ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ।
sabhaa bikhai ik maanav kehayo
A person in the courtroom speaks up:
ਮੈਂ ਤਿਸ ਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਲਹ੍ਯੋ ।
main tis gur ko darashan lehayo
"I have seen the Guru
ਗਯਾ ਕਰਾਵਨਿ ਮੈਂ ਚਲਿ ਗਯੋ ।
gayaa karaavan main chal gayo
while going to Gaya for prayers.
ਤਹਾਂ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਤਿਨਹੁਂ ਕੋ ਭਯੋ ॥੨੨॥
tahaan milaap tinahun ko bhayo ||22||
I met the Guru there. ||22||
ਸੋ ਭੀ ਗਯਾ ਬਿਖੈ ਚਲਿ ਆਏ ।
so bhee gayaa bikhai chal aae
They came to Gaya as well.
ਪੁਰਿ ਪਟਣੇ ਕੋ ਪੁਨਹਿਂ ਸਿਧਾਏ ।
pur pattane ko punahin sidhaae
Then, [the Guru] went towards the city Patna.
ਤਿਨ ਦਾਸਨ ਸੋਂ ਸੁਨੀ ਸੁ ਸੁਨੀਅਹਿ ।
tin daasan son sunee su suneeahi
[Allow me to] reiterate what I heard from Their servants.
ਕਿਤਿਕ ਕਾਲ ਬਸਿਬੋ ਤਹਿਂ ਜਨੀਅਹਿ ॥੨੩॥
kitik kaal basibo tahin janeeahi ||23||
[The servants said that the Guru] will stay in that city for a while. ||23||
ਲੋਕ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਹੁਂ ਤਜਿ ਤਜਿ ਸਦਨ ।
lok hazaarahun taj taj sadan
Thousands of people have left their homes
ਆਇ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਬੰਦਨ ਗੁਰ ਪਦਨ ।
aae karahin bandan gur padan
to come bow to the feet of the Guru.
ਜਹਾਂ ਕਹਾਂ ਮਹਿਮਾਂ ਮਹੀਆਨ ।
jahaan kahaan mahimaan maheeaan
Wherever there is the glory [of the Guru],
ਕਰ ਜੋਰਹਿਂ ਦੇਂ ਭੇਟਨਿ ਆਨਿ ॥੨੪॥
kar jorahin den bhettan aan ||24||
they come bearing gifts with their hands folded. ||24||
ਕਹਤਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਸੁਨੇ ਤਿਸ ਥਾਂਈਂ ।
kehat anek sune tis thaaneen
Many people from there say:
ਅਜ਼ਮਤ ਅਜਬ ਬਹੁਨਿ ਅਜ਼ਮਾਈ ।
azamat ajab bahun azamaaee
[we] have seen many miracles!'
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਨਾਮੁ ।
shree gur teg bahaadar naam
His name is Guru Tegh Bahadhur,
ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਲਿਤ ਪਿਖੇ ਅਭਿਰਾਮ ॥੨੫॥
jin ke chalit pikhe abhiraam ||25||
and wherever He goes, glory follows. ||25||
ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਮਾਰਗ ਕੋ ਗਮਨਾਏ ।
jis jis maarag ko gamanaae
Whichever path the Guru walks on,
ਸਿੱਖੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੋ ਬਰਖਾਏ ।
sikhee amrit ko barakhaae
He showers the immortal Sikhi.
ਸੋ ਸਭਿ ਦੇਸ਼ ਮਹਾਂ ਜਸ ਕਰਤਾ ।
so sabh desh mahaan jas karataa
The whole kingdom sings His glory!
ਜਹਿਂ ਕਹਿਂ ਉਤਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਚਰਿਤਾ ॥੨੬॥
jahin kahin utar kare shubh charitaa ||26||
Wherever He goes, only good will occur." ||26||
ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੁਨਿ ਧੀਰਜ ਪਾਯੋ ।
bishan singh sun dheeraj paayo
Hearing this, Bishan Singh feels relief and patience.
ਤਤਛਿਨ ਅਪਨਿ ਵਕੀਲ ਪਠਾਯੋ ।
tatachhin apan vakeel patthaayo
He calls for one of his advocates
ਬਹੁ ਉੱਤਮ ਦੇ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਅਕੋਰ ।
bahu utam de brind akor
[and gives them] many gifts [to give to the Guru],
ਬਿਨਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਭੇਜੀ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ॥੨੭॥
binatee kar bhejee kar jor ||27||
along with a special message of plea with hands folded. ||27||
ਤੂਰਨ ਗਮਨਹੁ ਤਹਿਂ ਅਟਕਾਵਹੁ ।
tooran gamanahu tahin attakaavahu
"Go quickly and ask Them to remain [in Patna].
ਮਮ ਦਿਸ਼ਿ ਤੇ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਨੈ ਸੁਨਾਵਹੁ ।
mam dish te bahu binai sunaavahu
Give [Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji] my message!
ਹੇਰਿ ਮਹੂਰਤ ਮੈਂ ਚਢਿ ਆਵੋਂ ।
her mahoorat main chadt aavon
When time permits, I will come.
ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਦਰਸੌਂ ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਲਾਵੌਂ ॥੨੮॥
tin ko darasauan bilam na laavauan ||28||
It will not be long before I arrive." ||28||
ਸੁਨਤਿ ਦੂਤ ਲੇ ਜਵੀ ਤੁਰੰਗ ।
sunat doot le javee turang
The messenger listens [and prepares] a fast-paced horse.
ਗਮਨ੍ਯੋ ਤੁਰਤ ਕੁਛਕ ਨਰ ਸੰਗ ।
gamanayo turat kuchhak nar sang
Immediately, the messenger gets ready and takes some people along.
ਦੂਰ ਦੂਰ ਕੀ ਮੰਜ਼ਲ ਕਰਤਾ ।
door door kee manzal karataa
It is a far, far distance to travel.
ਸ਼੍ਰਮ ਕੀ ਪੀਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਰ ਧਰਤਾ ॥੨੯॥
shram kee peer naheen ur dharataa ||29||
[They] overlook their fatigue [while travelling]. ||29||
ਪਹੁਂਚ੍ਯੋ ਪਟਣੇ ਪੁਰਿ ਮਹਿਂ ਜਾਇ ।
pahunchayo pattane pur mahin jaae
The messenger reaches the city of Patna
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੁਧਿ ਬੂਝੀ ਤਹਿਂ ਆਇ ।
satigur sudh boojhee tahin aae
and asks about the Satguru.
ਅਬਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਕਥਾ ।
ab shree teg bahaadar kathaa
Now, the life of Sri Tegh Bahadhur Ji.
ਸ਼੍ਰੋਤਾ ਸੁਨਹੁਂ ਬਿਤੀਤਾ ਜਥਾ ॥੩੦॥

Oh, listener! Listen to the upcoming [tale]. ||30||
ਦੋਹਰਾ
ਸਿੱਖ੍ਯਨਿ ਪੂਰਤ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਆਪ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਕੀਨਿ ।
sikhayan poorat kaamanaa aap kaamanaa keen
The One who fulfills the desires of all the Sikhs has a wish of Their own:
ਤੀਰਥ ਤੀਰ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੌ ਮੱਜਹਿਂ ਜਿਤ ਕਿਤ ਚੀਨ ॥੩੧॥
teerath teer samundr lau majahin jit kit cheen ||31||
He wishes to visit all the Holy sites near the ocean and bathe in their waters. ||31||
ਚੌਪਈ
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਦ ਕਰਿ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨਾ ।
brahamapatr nad kar ishanaanaa
To bathe in the river of Brahmaputra.
ਜਗਨ ਨਾਥ ਆਦਿਕ ਜੇ ਥਾਨਾ ।
jagan naath aadik je thaanaa
Sites such as Jagan Nath.
ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਸ਼ ਕੇ ਦੇਖਨਿ ਕਾਰਨ ।
desh desh ke dekhan kaaran
[For the excuse of] visiting different lands
ਸ਼ੁਭ ਮਾਰਗ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਬਿਸਤਾਰਨ ॥੩੨॥
shubh maarag sikhee bisataaran ||32||
to preach the true path of Sikhi. ||32||
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਜਹਿਂ ਗਏ ।
shree naanak tan kar jahin ge
To go where Sri Guru Nanak went, [in body form].
ਸੱਤ੍ਯਨਾਮ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਤਿ ਭਏ ।
satayanaam upadeshat bhe
To give the sermon of the True Name.
ਲੋਕ ਅਨੇਕਨਿ ਕੋ ਕੱਲ੍ਯਾਨ ।
lok anekan ko kalayaan
To bless the many people.
ਜਿਤ ਕਿਤ ਫਿਰ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਨਿ ਮਹਾਨ ॥੩੩॥
jit kit fir kar keen mahaan ||33||
[To go] wherever Guru Nanak Dev Ji went to bless people. ||33||
ਤਿਸ ਕੋ ਦਿਢ ਕਰਿਬੇ ਕੇ ਹੇਤੁ ।
tis ko didt karibe ke het
To solidify Their sermon.
ਚਿਤਵ੍ਯੋ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਕੇਤ ।
chitavayo shree gur kripaa niket
The Guru, the house of blessing, made this plan.
ਸਿੱਖ੍ਯਨਿ ਕਿਤਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਗ੍ਯਾ ਕੀਨਿ ।
sikhayan kitik pratagayaa keen
The Sikhs have made various pleas:
ਹਮ ਘਰ ਆਵਹਿਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥੩੪॥
ham ghar aavahin guroo prabeen ||34||
"[please] come to our house, Guru Ji!" ||34||
ਕਿਤਿ ਕਿਨਿ ਪੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਰਖੀ ਬਨਾਇ ।
kit kin poshish rakhee banaae
Many Sikhs have prepared garments [for Guru Sahib].
ਆਵਹਿਂ ਗੁਰ ਅਪਨੇ ਗਰ ਪਾਇਂ ।
aavahin gur apane gar paaein
"Guru Ji, [please] come to our home [and wear the clothes we prepared]?"
ਕਿਤਿਕ ਅੰਨ ਸੁਧ ਧਰੇ ਸਦਨ ਮੈਂ ।
kitik an sudh dhare sadan main
Many have the wish to prepare certain foods.
ਗੁਰੂ ਅਚਾਵਹਿਂ ਚਾਹਤਿ ਮਨ ਮੈਂ ॥੩੫॥
guroo achaavahin chaahat man main ||35||
They wish Guru Sahib would eat their food. ||35||
ਨਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਖਨ ਸੋਊ ।
nis din karahin prateekhan soaoo
They wait day and night.
ਕਰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਗ੍ਯਾ ਅਪਨੀ ਜੋਊ ।
karat pratagayaa apanee joaoo
They make it their determination.
ਮਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਧਰਿ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਅਰਾਧਨ ।
mahaan prem dhar karahin araadhan
They have a deep love and meditate on Him.
ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਬੂਝਤਿ ਹੈਂ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਧਨ ॥੩੬॥
mil mil boojhat hain bahu saadhan ||36||
[When the] sangat unites, they contemplate ways to meditate on the Guru. ||36||
ਕਬਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਆਵਹਿਂ ਇਸ ਦੇਸ਼ ।
kab satigur aavahin is desh
"When will Satguru Ji come to our country,
ਕਰਹਿਂ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਾਰਥ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ।
karahin kritaarath de upadesh
and give Their teachings and bless us?"
ਤਿਨ ਸਭਿਹਿਨਿ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਜਾਨਿ ।
tin sabhihin ke man kee jaan
[The Guru] knows the wishes of all minds.
ਗਮਨ੍ਯੋ ਚਹਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੩੭॥
gamanayo chehat guroo bhagavaan ||37||
Guru Bhagavāna desires to travel [and visit the neighbouring lands]. ||37||
ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੋ ਸੁਧ ਕਹਿ ਦਈ ।
sikh sangat ko sudh keh dee
[When] the Sikh sangat is informed
ਆਗੇ ਜਾਨਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਤਿ ਠਈ ।
aage jaan guroo mat tthee
that Guru Sahib will be travelling [abroad].
ਸੁਨਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਕਠੀ ਹੁਇ ਆਈ ।
sun sangat ikatthee hue aaee
The sangat gathers upon hearing this news
ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਉਪਾਇਨ ਲ੍ਯਾਈ ॥੩੮॥
anik prakaar upaaein layaaee ||38||
and brings many types of gifts. ||38||
ਦਰਬ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪਟ ਝੀਨੇ ।
darab brind sundar patt jheene
They bring money and many fine garments.
ਜ਼ਰੀ ਬਾਦਲਾ ਕੇ ਦੁਤਿ ਭੀਨੇ ।
zaree baadalaa ke dut bheene
[The sangat] offers clothes with fine, golden threading
ਕੇਤਿਕ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਜਰੀ ਹਿਤ ਲ੍ਯਾਏ ।
ketik shree gujaree hit layaae
and beautiful garments for Mata Gujri Ji.
ਬਹੁਤ ਮੋਲ ਕੇ ਵਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਹਾਏ ॥੩੯॥
bahut mol ke vasatr suhaae ||39||
The expensive clothes are exceptionally radiant. ||39||
ਜਰੇ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਭੂਖਨ ਚਾਰੁ ।
jare javaahar bhookhan chaar
The jewellery has numerous precious gems embedded in them.
ਬਹੁਤ ਭਾਂਤ ਕੇ ਬਨੇ ਅਪਾਰ ।
bahut bhaant ke bane apaar
The items are crafted with such beauty.
ਧਨੀ ਬਨਿਕ ਕੀ ਦਾਰਾ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ।
dhanee banik kee daaraa brind
The wives of the wealthy merchants come.
ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਭੀ ਬਡਭਾਗ ਅਨੰਦ ॥੪੦॥
praapat bhee baddabhaag anand ||40||
They are fortunate to receive such bliss. ||40||
ਸਭਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਿਨੈ ਸੁਨਾਈ ।
sabh sangat mil binai sunaaee
The entire sangat makes a request:
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਇਸ ਥਾਈਂ ।
sree gur kripaa karahu is thaaeen
"Oh, supreme Guru, please bless us!
ਸੇਵਾ ਅਪਨੀ ਸਭਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਵਹੁ ।
sevaa apanee sabh furamaavahu
[Please tell us] how we may serve Thee.
ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਸੋਂ ਕਹਿ ਕਰਿਵਾਵਹੁ ॥੪੧॥
ham daasan son keh karivaavahu ||41||
Tell us servants [what You would like done, and we will] do [the seva]. ||41||
ਚਰਨ ਆਪਕੇ ਜਹਾਂ ਉਪਾਸੇ ।
charan aapake jahaan upaase
Wherever Your holy feet are worshipped,
ਅਖਿਲ ਆਇ ਤਹਿਂ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਾਸੇਂ ।
akhil aae tahin teerath vaasen
that place becomes a pilgrimage site.
ਲਹੈ ਸਪਰਸ਼ਨ ਰਾਵਰ ਸੰਗਾ ।
lahai saparashan raavar sangaa
Whatever touches Thee
ਗੰਗਾ ਹੁਇ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰਬੰਗਾ ॥੪੨॥
gangaa hue paavan sarabangaa ||42||
becomes pure like the waters of Ganga. ||42||
ਚਹਹੁ ਜਹਾਂ ਨਿਜ ਚਰਨ ਧਰਨ ਕੋ ।
chahahu jahaan nij charan dharan ko
Wherever You desire to place Your feet,
ਜਗੇ ਭਾਗ ਨਰ ਧੰਨ ਕਰਨਿ ਕੋ ।
jage bhaag nar dhan karan ko
that place becomes blessed and its citizens.
ਇਸ ਪੁਰਿ ਕੀ ਗਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਰੀ ।
eis pur kee gan sangat saaree
The sangat of this city
ਜਿਮ ਅਭਿਲਾਖਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੪੩॥
jim abhilaakhaa kareh tumaaree ||43||
longs for Your presence. ||43||
ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਨਿ ਉਚਿਤ ਤੁਮ ਅਹੋ ।
pooran karan uchit tum aho
It is befitting to fulfill our [humble] request.
ਨਿਸ਼ਚੈ ਚਲ੍ਯੋ ਜਿ ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿਂ ਚਹੋ ।
nishachai chalayo ji chit mahin chaho
[However], if You are determined to go,
ਮਾਤਾ ਸਹਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਡੇਰਾ ।
maataa sehat raheh sabh dderaa
[please] leave the Mata's, along with your household, here.
ਇਸੀ ਸਦਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਸੇਰਾ ॥੪੪॥
eisee sadan mahin kareh baseraa ||44||
[The sangat] will live here. ||44||
ਤੁਮਰੇ ਥਾਨ ਆਇਂ ਸਿਖ ਸਾਰੇ ।
tumare thaan aaein sikh saare
Everyone will come to your home.
ਪੂਜਹਿਂ ਸਰਬ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਹਿਤ ਧਾਰੇ ।
poojahin sarab bhaant hit dhaare
They come to perform their worships here in various ways.
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਮਨਾਵਹਿਂ ।
shree maataa ke charan manaavahin
[We] will revere the feet of the supreme Mata [Nanaki Ji].
ਮਨੋ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੪੫॥
mano kaamanaa sangat paavahi ||45||
The sangat's wishes will be fulfilled. ||45||
ਆਪ ਆਇ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਉਡੀਕਾ ।
aap aae ho rahe uddeekaa
We will wait for You to return.
ਪੁਨ ਦਰਸਹਿਂ ਸਿਖ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਨੀਕਾ ।
pun darasahin sikh darashan neekaa
Then, the Sikhs will come to see You.
ਅਪਰ ਤਰਕ ਨਹਿਂ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ।
apar tarak nahin karahu prakaash
[Please], do not think of anything else.
ਇਹੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਗਰੀ ਤੁਮ ਦਾਸ ॥੪੬॥
eihu sangat sagaree tum daas ||46||
This sangat - we are all Your servants. ||46||
ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਮਹਿਂ ਠਾਢੇ ।
nis baasur sevaa mahin tthaadte
We are ready to serve you day and night.
ਗੁਰੂ ਚਰਨ ਪਰ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਗਾਢੇ ।
guroo charan par nishachaa gaadte
We have complete faith in Your feet."
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਹੇਰੀ ।
shree gur teg bahaadar heree
Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji recognizes
ਅਧਿਕ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੇਰੀ ॥੪੭॥
adhik bhaavanaa sangat keree ||47||
the devotion of sangat. ||47||
ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸੰਗ ਤਿਸ ਕਾਲੇ ।
kehayo kripaal sang tis kaale
[Then, Guru Ji] said to Bhai Kirpaal Ji:
ਬਸਹੁ ਸਰਬ ਤੁਮ ਇਹਾਂ ਸੁਖਾਲੇ ।
basahu sarab tum ihaan sukhaale
"All of you should live here in peace.
ਹਮ ਕੇਤਿਕ ਦਿਨ ਫਿਰ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਰੇ ।
ham ketik din fir kar saare
I will go for many days
ਤੀਰਥ ਕਰਤੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੪੮॥
teerath karate desh nihaare ||48||
to visit the holy places of this country. ||48||
ਸਭਿ ਡੇਰੇ ਬਿਨ ਗਮਨਹਿਂ ਤੂਰਨ ।
sabh ddere bin gamanahin tooran
I shall visit all the temples
ਕਰਹਿਂ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਅਪਨੀ ਪੂਰਨ ।
karahin kaamanaa apanee pooran
and fulfill My wishes."
ਇਮ ਨਿਜ ਦਾਸ ਅਪਰ ਸਮੁਝਾਏ ।
eim nij daas apar samujhaae
Thus, Guru Ji instructs His devotees
ਜੇ ਪਟਨੇ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਿਖੇ ਹਟਾਏ ॥੪੯॥
je pattane pur bikhe hattaae ||49||
and tells [the sangat] to live [here] in Patna. ||49||
ਮਾਤ ਨਾਨਕੀ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਆਈ ।
maat naanakee sun kar aaee
Upon hearing this, Mata Nanaki Ji enters [the room]
ਪਰਮ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਤੇ ਕਹਤਿ ਸੁਨਾਈ ।
param prem te kehat sunaaee
filled with unconditional love. She speaks:
ਹੇ ਸੁਤ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਦੇਖਨਿ ਕਰੌਂ ।
he sut tum ko dekhan karauan
"Oh, Son! Seeing You
ਸਦਾ ਆਪਨੇ ਉਰ ਸੁਖ ਧਰੌਂ ॥੫੦॥
sadaa aapane ur sukh dharauan ||50||
fills my entire heart with joy. ||50||
ਅਬਿ ਮੋ ਕਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਕੈ ਨਿਜ ਸੰਗ ।
ab mo kahu taj kai nij sang
You are now leaving me
ਗਮਨ ਅਗਾਰੀ ਧਰੋ ਉਮੰਗ ।
gaman agaaree dharo umang
and want to go forth."
ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨੇ ਸਮੁਝਾਈ ।
sun kai satigur ne samujhaaee
Hearing this, Satguru Ji replied,
ਪੁਰਵਹੁ ਉਰ ਆਸ਼ਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥੫੧॥
puravahu ur aashaa sukhadaaee ||51||
"fulfill the desires of your heart. ||51||
ਹਮ ਕੋ ਜਾਨੋ ਬਨੈ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ।
ham ko jaano banai zaroor
It is necessary for Me to go
ਕੇਤਿਕ ਸਿੱਖ੍ਯਨਿ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਪੂਰਿ ।
ketik sikhayan sharadhaa poor
and fulfill the wishes of the Sikh."
ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਸਭਿ ਕੋ ਧੀਰ ।
eis prakaar de sabh ko dheer
In this fashion, [the Guru] consoles everyone
ਚਲ੍ਯੋ ਚਹਿਤ ਹੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੰਭੀਰ ॥੫੨॥
chalayo chahit hain guroo ganbheer ||52||
and expresses Their wishes to go. ||52||
