ਦਿੱਲੀ ਤੇ ਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਜੋ ਗਮਨ੍ਯੋ ਆਇਸੁ ਲੇਯ ।

dilee te sikh pratham jo gamanayo aaeis ley

ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਠ੍ਯੋ ਭੇਟ ਕੋ ਦੇਯ ॥੧॥

teg bahaadar satiguroo patthayo bhett ko dey ||1||

ਪੈਸੇ ਪੰਚਹੁਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਫਲ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗੁਰਤਾ ਅਰਪਨਿ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੋਇ ।

paise panchahun shree fal sundar gurataa arapan kee bidh joe

This Sikh, who was assigned to deliver the sacred Guruship, carried with him five coins and the Guru's coconut.

ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਪੰਥ ਬਿਖੈ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਥਨ੍ਯੋ ਥਿਰ੍ਯੋ ਨ ਕਿਸ ਥਲ ਥਕਤਿ ਨ ਸੋਇ ।

le kar panth bikhai prasaathanayo thirayo na kis thal thakat na soe

He set off, stopping at no place, and experienced no fatigue.

ਗੁਰ ਆਗ੍ਯਾ ਸ੍ਯੰਦਨ ਅਸਵਾਰੀ ਚਿਤ ਉਤਸਾਹ ਸੂਤ ਤਬਿ ਹੋਇ ।

gur aagayaa sayandan asavaaree chit utasaah soot tab hoe

For him, the Guru's command served as his horse and chariot, with his enthusiasm being the charioteer.

ਪਹੁਂਚ੍ਯੋ ਆਣਿ ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰਿ ਸੋ ਸਿਖ ਕੁਸ਼ਲ ਕਹਿਤ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਨਰ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥

pahunchayo aan anandapur so sikh kushal kahit boojheh nar koe ||2||

Upon reaching Anandpur, he enquired about everyone's wellbeing, engaging with all he encountered. ||2||

ਸਵਾ ਪਹਿਰ ਦਿਨ ਆਯੋ ਤਿਸ ਛਿਨ ਬੈਠੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਾਇ ।

savaa pahir din aayo tis chhin baitthe shree gobind singh raae

Approximately an hour and a half after sunrise, Gobind Singh Rai was seated in the royal court.

ਜਗਤ ਸਮਸਤ ਜੁ ਬਰਤਹਿ ਨਿਤਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਸੋ ਸਭਿ ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿਂ ਬਿਦਤਹਿ ਆਇ ।

jagat samasat ju barateh nitaprat so sabh chit mahin bidateh aae

All events transpiring across the globe were continually known to the exalted Gobind Singh Rai.

ਕਿਤਿਕ ਮਸੰਦ ਬਿਲੰਦ ਚਿੰਤ ਜੁਤਿ ਚਹੁਂਦਿਸਿ ਮਹਿਂ ਤਿਮ ਸਿਖ ਸਮੁਦਾਇ ।

kitik masand biland chint jut chahundis mahin tim sikh samudaae

Influential Masands sat amidst this gathering, their minds clouded with anxiety, surrounded by Sikhs hailing from all four corners of the world.

ਕੇਚਿਤ ਰਹਤਿ ਸਮੀਪ ਕਦੀਮੀਂ ਕੇਚਿਤ ਨਏ ਦਰਸ ਹਿਤ ਆਇਂ ॥੩॥

kechit rehat sameep kadeemeen kechit ne daras hit aaein ||3||

Some of these Sikhs were long-standing disciples who lived close to the Guru, while others had arrived afresh, driven by the desire to behold the Guru. ||3||

ਸ਼ੀਘ੍ਰ ਕਰਤਿ ਸਿਖ ਪਹੁਂਚ੍ਯੋ ਤਤਛਿਨ ਦੇਖਿ ਉਠੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗਵਾਇ ।

sheeghr karat sikh pahunchayo tatachhin dekh utthe satigur agavaae

The Sikh made his journey swiftly and arrived forthwith; upon seeing him, the Guru rose from his seat.

ਗੁਰਤਾ ਪਹੁਂਚੀ ਲਖੀ ਨਮੋ ਕਰਿ ਪੁਨ ਬੈਠੇ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨ ਆਇ ।

gurataa pahunchee lakhee namo kar pun baitthe singhaasan aae

Upon perceiving the arrival of the 'Guruship', the Guru paid his respects and then resumed his seat on the throne.

ਧਰਿ ਪੈਸੇ ਆਗੇ ਸਭਿ ਦੇਖਤਿ ਲੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੀਫਲ ਝੋਰੀ ਮਹਿਂ ਪਾਇ ।

dhar paise aage sabh dekhat le shreefal jhoree mahin paae

The Sikh held the ceremonial offering of coins, and placed them along with the auspicious coconut into a small pouch, all visible to the assembly.

ਹਾਥ ਬੰਦਿ ਬੰਦਨ ਸਿਖ ਕੀਨਸਿ ਪਦ ਅਰਬਿੰਦਨਿ ਸੀਸ ਟਿਕਾਇ ॥੪॥

haath band bandan sikh keenas pad arabindan sees ttikaae ||4||

With folded hands, the Sikh made his obeisance, lowering his head to touch the lotus-like feet of the Guru. ||4||

ਪੁਨ ਸਿਖ ਨੇ ਸਿਖ ਸਭਾ ਸਰਬ ਕੋ ਨਮੋ ਕਰੀ ਚਹੁਂਦਿਸ਼ਿ ਮੁਖ ਫੇਰਿ ।

pun sikh ne sikh sabhaa sarab ko namo karee chahundish mukh fer

Then the Sikh, turning his face in all four directions, greeted the entire Sikh assembly present.

ਆਇਸੁ ਲੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬੈਠ੍ਯੋ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਹੇਰਿ ।

aaeis le satigur kee baitthayo sanamukh sundar darashan her

Having received permission from the Guru, he sat down right in front of the Guru, beholding the divine sight of the Guru's radiant presence.

ਸੁਧਿ ਬੂਝੀ ਸਭਿ ਲਗ੍ਯੋ ਸੁਨਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਰਕੇਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਕੇ ਖੋਟ ਬਡੇਰ ।

sudh boojhee sabh lagayo sunaavan turakeshvar ke khott badder

On being asked about the news, the Sikh began to relay, "The Turk ruler, Aurangzeb, has committed grave misdeeds.

ਕਰਤਿ ਕਠਿਨਤਾ ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਕੀ ਨਹਿਂ ਕੁਛ ਜਾਨਹਿਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਲੇਰ ॥੫॥

karat katthinataa anik bhaant kee nahin kuchh jaanahin prabhoo daler ||5||

He has instigated various kinds of hardships and trouble, yet the fearless Divine, [Guru Tegh Bahadur], remains unperturbed. ||5||

ਬਦਨ ਪ੍ਰਫੁੱਲ੍ਯਤਿ ਇਕ ਸਮ ਨਿਤ ਰਹਿ ਜਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤਿ ਖਿਰਹਿਂ ਅਰਬਿੰਦ ।

badan prafalayat ik sam nit reh jathaa prabhaat khirahin arabind

The countenance of the Guru, like the lotus at dawn, remained radiant at all times.

ਪਠਹਿ ਨੁਰੰਗਾ ਕੁਮਤਿ ਮੁਲਾਨੇ ਜੇ ਸ੍ਯਾਨੇ ਉਮਰਾਵ ਬਿਲੰਦ ।

pattheh nurangaa kumat mulaane je sayaane umaraav biland

The malicious Aurangzeb, sent forth his Islamic jurists and high-ranking ministers with wicked intent.

ਕਰਾਮਾਤ ਕੁਛ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਿਖਾਵਨਿ ਕੈ ਤਜਿ ਦੇਹੁ ਧਰਮ ਜੋ ਹਿੰਦੁ ।

karaamaat kuchh karahu dikhaavan kai taj dehu dharam jo hind

They implored, ‘Demonstrate some miracles, or else renounce your Hindu dharma.’

ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਿਰੋਮਨ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਜਿ ਆਵਹੁ ਵਧੈ ਦੀਨ ਤੌ ਮਾਨਹਿਂ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ॥੬॥

sarab shiroman sharhaa ji aavahu vadhai deen tau maanahin brind ||6||

And ‘Embrace the supreme Islamic law, the Sharia. If you do so, our faith will flourish, and all who revere you will follow suit. ||6||

ਦ੍ਵਿਜ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰੀ ਆਦਿ ਜਿਤਿਕ ਜਗ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਦਿਸ਼ਿ ਦੇਖਤਿ ਸਭਿ ਕੋਇ ।

dvij kashameeree aad jitik jag tumaree dish dekhat sabh koe

All the Kashmiri Brahmins and similar ones in the world, everyone looks to you.

ਫੇਰ ਨ ਫੇਰਹਿ ਕਿਸੂ ਦੇਸ਼ ਮਹਿਂ ਮਾਨਹਿਂ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਤੁਰਕ ਜਗ ਹੋਇ ।

fer na fereh kisoo desh mahin maanahin kehayo turak jag hoe

No one will oppose you across the entire land if you convert to Islam; everyone will acknowledge the Turko-Islamic world.

ਇਮ ਚਿਤ ਚਹਤਿ ਨ ਜੇ ਅਤਿ ਰੁਚਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਜ਼ਮਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਸ਼ਾਹੁ ਕਹਿ ਜੋਇ ।

eim chit chehat na je at ruch kar azamat karahu shaahu keh joe

Even if your heart is not inclined towards this, the emperor wishes for you to demonstrate a miracle.

ਰਾਮਰਾਇ ਬਹੁ ਕਰੀ ਅਧਿਕ ਹੀ ਜਿਮ ਭਾਖੀ ਦਿਖਰਾਵਤਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੭॥

raamaraae bahu karee adhik hee jim bhaakhee dikharaavat soe ||7||

After all, Ram Rai had performed numerous miracles, presenting whichever the emperor demanded... ||7||

ਦਰਬ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਹਜ਼ਰਤ ਨੇ ਦੀਨਸਿ ਬਡ ਮਰਾਤਬਾ ਪਾਯੋ ਤਾਂਹਿ ।

darab brind hazarat ne deenas badd maraatabaa paayo taanhi

…the emperor conferred upon [Ram Rai] immense wealth and a high status in his court.

ਜਿਤ ਕਿਤ ਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਵਧ੍ਯੋ ਸਮਾਜ ਸੁਜਸ ਜਗ ਮਾਂਹਿ ।

jit kit te sabh sangat hoee vadhayo samaaj sujas jag maanhi

Wherever his congregation gathers, their numbers swell and his fame spreads across the world.

ਬਸਹੁ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਕੇ ਦੇਸ਼ਨਿ ਮਹਿਂ ਤੁਮ ਪੁਜਵਾਵਹੁ ਜਿਤ ਦਿਸ਼ਿ ਚਲਿ ਜਾਹਿਂ ।

basahu shaah ke deshan mahin tum pujavaavahu jit dish chal jaahin

Come and reside within the emperor's land; you will be venerated wherever you go.

ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਕਰਿ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਨ ਮਾਨਹਿਂ ਤਿਸ ਕੋ ਦਿਹੁ ਅਜ਼ਮਤ ਨਹਿਂ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਨਾਂਹਿ ॥੮॥

kayon kar kehayo na maanahin tis ko dihu azamat nahin keejeh naanhi ||8||

Why do you not acquiesce to the emperor's request? Simply demonstrate a miracle and cease your denials.’ ||8||

ਗੁਰੂ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਮੂਰਖ ਚਵਗੱਤਾ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਕੁਪੱਤਾ ਮੱਤਾ ਮੰਦ ।

guroo kehayo moorakh chavagataa dushatt kupataa mataa mand

Guru Tegh Bahadur said, “This adversary, the Chagatai, is a foolish, dishonourable fool.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਰੱਤਾ ਹੁਇ ਬਿਨ ਸੱਤਾ ਹੁੱਤਾ ਤੁਰਕਨ ਤੇਜ ਬਿਲੰਦ ।

duramat rataa hue bin sataa hutaa turakan tej biland

He is thoroughly soaked in malice; that great power once possessed by the Turks will now diminish.

ਝਖ ਮਾਰਤਿ ਤੱਤਾ ਹੁਇ ਕਰਿ ਮੱਤਾ ਬਨਹਿ ਉਵੱਤਾ ਘੱਤਾ ਦੁੰਦ ।

jhakh maarat tataa hue kar mataa baneh uvataa ghataa dund

His hotheadedness spews nonsense, he is drunk on arrogance, constantly instigating baseless strife.

ਗੁਰ ਬਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਬਾਬਰ ਲਿੱਤਾ ਇਹ ਖੋਵੈ ਤਿਸ ਨੱਤਾ ਨੰਦ ॥੯॥

gur bar ditaa baabar litaa ih khovai tis nataa nand ||9||

Guru [Nanak] granted a boon to the Turks, received by Babur, which now stands squandered by his great grandson’s grandson!”. ||9||

ਕਰਾਮਾਤ ਕੋ ਕਹੈਂ ਕਹਿਰ ਜਨ ਦਰਵੇਸ਼ਨਿ ਕੋ ਐਸ ਨ ਕਾਜ ।

karaamaat ko kahain kahir jan daraveshan ko ais na kaaj

[Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji continued]: “The true servants of the Divine, the Darveshs, regard the performance of miracles as calamity.

ਨਾਟਕ ਚੇਟਕ ਕਰਿ ਦਿਖਰਾਵਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲੋਕਨ ਕਹਿ ਆਵਤਿ ਲਾਜ ।

naattak chettak kar dikharaavan prabh lokan keh aavat laaj

The followers of God feel shame in performing such trickery and quackery for the people.

ਅਧਿਕ ਧਰਮ ਧਨ ਧਾਰਹਿਂ ਨ ਛੋਰਹਿਂ ਨਿਜ ਨਿਜ ਪ੍ਰਿਯ ਸਭਿ ਕੋ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਜ ।

adhik dharam dhan dhaarahin na chhorahin nij nij priy sabh ko sukh saaj

These Divine beings uphold the great wealth of Dharma, never abandoning it, bringing peace to everyone in their own beloved way.

ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੇਟ ਕੋ ਸਾਕਹਿ ਹਠ ਜੋ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੂਢ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਜ ॥੧੦॥

eeshvar kareh mett ko saakeh hatth jo kareh moodt mat paaj ||10||

Whatever the Divine wills cannot be destroyed; any forceful attempt by those of foolish mindset is useless." ||10||

ਮ੍ਰਿਦੁਲ ਕਠਨ ਇੱਤ੍ਯਾਦਿਕ ਭਾਖੇ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਖਹਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਉਰ ਮਾਂਹਿ ।

mridul katthan itayaadik bhaakhe sun kar dukheh adhik ur maanhi

Hearing the bittersweet words, the Islamic jurists and the minister were struck with immense pain.

ਪੁਨ ਗੁਰ ਮੋ ਕਹੁ ਕੀਨਿ ਅਵਾਹਨ ਜਮਾਦਾਰ ਕਾਰਾਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤਾਂਹਿ ।

pun gur mo kahu keen avaahan jamaadaar kaaraagrih taanhi

Then, the Guru sent for me through the jailor at the prison, a devotee of the Guru himself.

ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੁਇ ਅਨਕੂਲੀ ਪਠਹੁ ਜੁ ਸਿੱਖ ਮਿਲਾਵਹਿ ਵਾਹਿ ।

so gur sevak hue anakoolee patthahu ju sikh milaaveh vaahi

This prison guard faithfully served the Guru, dutifully bringing any Sikh the Guru called for.

ਬੰਦਹਿ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਊ ਮੁਝ ਲੇ ਗਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕੇ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥

bandeh charan kamal sharadhaaoo mujh le gayo prabhoo ke paahi ||11||

He led me into the divine presence of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, and in faith, I bowed before the Guru's lotus feet. ||11||

ਗੁਰ ਬੋਲੇ ਹਮ ਅਲਪ ਆਰਬਲ ਇਕ ਦੁਇ ਦਿਨ ਕੀ ਨਿਸ਼ਚੈ ਜਾਨਿ ।

gur bole ham alap aarabal ik due din kee nishachai jaan

The Guru said to me: 'I only have one or two days left, understand this well.

ਜਗ ਗੁਰਤਾ ਕੋ ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਗਮਨਹੁ ਨਹਿਂ ਠਹਿਰਹੁ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ਸਵਧਾਨ ।

jag gurataa ko le kar gamanahu nahin tthahirahu hvai kai savadhaan

Go now, take up the Guruship. Stay vigilant and do not halt anywhere.

ਪਹੁਂਚਹੁ ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਅੰਸਹਿ ਅਰਪਹੁ ਵਧੈ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਜਹਾਨ ਮਹਾਨ ।

pahunchahu eeshvar anseh arapahu vadhai prataap jahaan mahaan

Reach my son, the divine Guru Gobind Singh, and present these offerings to him; His glory will then pervade the whole world.

ਬਿਨਾ ਕਾਨ ਤੁਰਕਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਨਹੁ ਸੇਵਕਾਨਿ ਰੱਛਹੁ ਬਲ ਠਾਨਿ ॥੧੨॥

binaa kaan turakaan prahaanahu sevakaan rachhahu bal tthaan ||12||

[And advise him to] never lend an ear to the Turks, strike them down, and protect His servants with great strength.’ ||12||

ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਗਮਨ੍ਯੋ ਥਿਰ੍ਯੋ ਨ ਮਾਰਗ ਗੁਰ ਬਲ ਤੇ ਪਹੁਂਚ੍ਯੋ ਪੁਰਿ ਆਇ ।

le kar gamanayo thirayo na maarag gur bal te pahunchayo pur aae

Having taken these items, without halting on the path, I arrived in the city through the strength of the Guru.”

ਸਭਾ ਸਹਿਤ ਕਲਗ਼ੀਧਰ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਉਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਲ੍ਯਾਇ ।

sabhaa sahit kalageedhar sun kar gur simaran kar ur mahin layaae

Hearing this, in the presence of his court, the plume-adorned Guru Gobind Singh remembered his father in his heart.

ਬੰਦਿ ਹਾਥ ਬੰਦਨ ਕਰਿ ਪੁਨ ਪੁਨ ਅਲਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਗਤਿ ਲਖੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ।

band haath bandan kar pun pun alakh guroo gat lakhee na jaae

Joining hands, he paid his respects over and over again. “The Guru is unfathomable, His extent cannot be understood.”

ਮਾਤ ਨਾਨਕੀ ਜਹਿਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਜਰੀ ਪਹੁਂਚਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਕਰਿ ਨਮੋ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥੧੩॥

maat naanakee jahin shree gujaree pahunch sikh kar namo sunaae ||13||

At that time, Mother Nanaki, the mother of Guru Tegh Bahadur, and Mata Gujari, His wife, arrived. The Sikh bowed to them and narrated the events. ||13||

ਦੀਰਘ ਸ੍ਵਾਸ ਤਪਤ ਅਤਿ ਛੋਰਤਿ ਲੋਚਨ ਜਲ ਝਲਕ੍ਯੋ ਤਤਕਾਲ ।

deeragh svaas tapat at chhorat lochan jal jhalakayo tatakaal

The mothers drew long breaths, experiencing intense burning [of their sorrow]. Their eyes instantly released a flood of tear-drops.

ਅਤਿ ਸਮਰਥ ਜਿਨ ਦਾਸਨ ਦਾਸਹਿ ਸਹੀ ਅਵੱਗ੍ਯਾ ਇਤਿਕ ਬਿਸਾਲ ।

at samarath jin daasan daaseh sahee avagayaa itik bisaal

He who is supremely powerful, the servant of whose servants are powerful, endured such a grave insult.

ਚਹੈਂ ਕਰੈਂ ਬਿਨ ਬਿਲਮ ਸਰਬ ਕੁਛ ਬਸਿ ਤੁਰਕੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਕੇ ਅਸ ਹਾਲ ।

chahain karain bin bilam sarab kuchh bas turakeshur ke as haal

He could do anything without hesitation, yet He remained under the control of the emperor of the Turks.

ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਗੁਰ ਅਚਰਜ ਚਰਿਤਾ ਕਿਮ ਕੋ ਬਾਕ ਕਹੈ ਕਿਸ ਨਾਲ ॥੧੪॥

dhan dhan gur acharaj charitaa kim ko baak kahai kis naal ||14||

Blessed, blessed is the Guru's miraculous character. Who can describe it and to whom ||14||

ਅਵਧ ਓਜ ਕੀ ਅਵਧਿ ਧੀਰ ਕੀ ਅਵਧਿ ਅਵੱਗ੍ਯਾ ਲਹੀ ਸਹਾਰ ।

avadh oj kee avadh dheer kee avadh avagayaa lahee sahaar

They bore the limit of strength, the limit of patience, and the limit of insult.

ਤੁਮ ਬਿਨ ਕਉਨ ਕਰੈ ਅਸ ਕਾਰਜ ਹਿੰਦੁ ਧਰਮ ਕੋ ਧਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਰ ।

tum bin kaun karai as kaaraj hind dharam ko dhar kar bhaar

But without you, who could perform such an act, holding the burden of Hindu Dharma on your shoulders?

ਕਰਹੁ ਸੁ ਭਲੀ ਤਰਕ ਕੋ ਕਿਮ ਕਰਿ ਹਮ ਕੋ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਪ੍ਯਾਸ ਉਦਾਰ ।

karahu su bhalee tarak ko kim kar ham ko darashan payaas udaar

How can anyone quarrel with you? You do only good for others. We are longing for your sight, O Guru.

ਇਕ ਸਮ ਲੋਕ ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਅਨੰਦਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਹੁ ਸਭਿ ਕੇ ਦਾਤਾਰ ॥੧੫॥

eik sam lok pralok anandahu pratipaalahu sabh ke daataar ||15||

You exist blissfully in both worlds, being the protector and provider of all. ||15||

ਮਾਤ ਨਾਨਕੀ ਰੁਦਤਿ ਬ੍ਰਿਲਾਪਤ ਜਥਾ ਸਸੁਰ ਮੇਰੈ ਗਤਿ ਕੀਨਿ ।

maat naanakee rudat brilaapat jathaa sasur merai gat keen

Mata Nanaki weeps and mourns the Guru, lamenting "Just like my father-in-law, this has happened again."

ਅਜ਼ਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਨਾਵਨ ਕੀਨਸਿ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਸਹਾਰੇ ਤਨ ਪਰ ਪੀਨ ।

azamat nahee janaavan keenas kashatt sahaare tan par peen

Guru Arjan Dev Ji refrained from displaying miracles and instead, his body underwent significant hardships.

ਦੇ ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਿਰ ਦੋਸ਼ ਘਨੇਰਾ ਰਾਵੀ ਤਟ ਸਰੀਰ ਤਜਿ ਦੀਨਿ ।

de khatree sir dosh ghaneraa raavee tatt sareer taj deen

He allocated severe blame to Chandu, a Khatri, and relinquished his body on the bank of the river Ravi.

ਤਥਾ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਕੋ ਧੀਰਜ ਹੇਰਾ ਸਕਲ ਕਲਾ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥੧੬॥

tathaa putr ko dheeraj heraa sakal kalaa samarath prabeen ||16||

Similarly, I have observed the resilience of my son, the Guru, who is proficient and supremely powerful in all aspects. ||16||

ਢਰ੍ਯੋ ਦੁਪਹਿਰਾ ਦੋਇ ਘਰੀ ਜਬਿ ਇਮਿ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜੁਤਿ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਬਿਸਾਲ ।

dtarayo dupahiraa doe gharee jab im chintaa jut shok bisaal

The two mothers drowned in anxiety and vast sorrow until the afternoon.

ਔਚਕ ਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਰੁਚਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਯੰਕ ਤ੍ਯਾਗਿ ਤਤਕਾਲ ।

aauachak hee gur gobind singh jee ruchir prayank tayaag tatakaal

At that point, Guru Gobind Singh Ji immediately left his delightful bedstead.

ਧਰ ਪਰ ਫਰਸ਼ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਤਹਿਂ ਬੈਠੇ ਤੂਸ਼ਨਿ ਠਾਨਿ ਪਿਖਹਿਂ ਸਿਖ ਜਾਲ ।

dhar par farash karayo tahin baitthe tooshan tthaan pikhahin sikh jaal

He spread a rug on the floor, sat in silence while all the Sikhs around observed.

ਜਨਨੀ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਗਈ ਸੁਧਿ ਜਬਿਹੂੰ ਸਾਸ ਨੁਖਾ ਦੁਖ ਲਹ੍ਯੋ ਕਰਾਲ ॥੧੭॥

jananee nikatt gee sudh jabihoon saas nukhaa dukh lehayo karaal ||17||

Upon hearing this news, both Mata Nanaki and Mata Gujri were struck by a sharp, profound sorrow. ||17||

ਜਾਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਜਗ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਕੁੰਠਹਿ ਤਨ ਕੋ ਤ੍ਯਾਗਿ ਗਏਮਨ ਚੀਨ ।

jaanee gat jag guroo bikunttheh tan ko tayaag geman cheen

They realised that the Guru of the world had relinquished his physical form and ascended to heaven.

ਤਬਿ ਧਰਨੀ ਪਰ ਥਿਰ ਸੁਤ ਹੋਵਾ ਮਹਾਂ ਬਿਖਾਦ ਰਿਦੇ ਮਹਿਂ ਕੀਨਿ ।

tab dharanee par thir sut hovaa mahaan bikhaad ride mahin keen

Learning that the Guru's son was now seated on the ground, [the sangat] felt an overwhelming anguish in their hearts.

ਦਾਸੀ ਦਾਸ ਦੇਖਿ ਦੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਊਚੇ ਰੁਦਤਿ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਮਨ ਲੀਨ ।

daasee daas dekh dukh praapat aooche rudat shok man leen

The Guru's servants and the mothers, upon seeing this distress, began to share in the sorrow, their lamentations filling the air.

ਮਹਾਂਰਾਜ ਹਮ ਕੌਨ ਸੰਭਾਰਹਿ ਆਪ ਅਲੰਬ ਦੁਨੀ ਅਰੁ ਦੀਨ ॥੧੮॥

mahaanraaj ham kauan sanbhaareh aap alanb dunee ar deen ||18||

They cried out, “Oh, Maharaja, who will care for us now? You are the pillar of both the spiritual and the material world!" ||18||

ਸ਼ੋਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਮਹਿਲਨਿ ਮਹਿਂ ਹੋਵਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦਾਸ ਪਠਾਇ ।

shok shabad mahilan mahin hovaa sun kar satigur daas patthaae

The sounds of profound grief and lamentations from the Guru's residence reached the ears of Guru Gobind Singh, who then dispatched his attendants to console them.

ਗੁਰ ਹਿਤ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਬਿਲਾਪ ਨ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਗੁਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੇ ਸਮੁਦਾਇ ।

gur hit shok bilaap na keejeh simarahu gun prabh ke samudaae

The servants relayed: “Do not cry and grieve for the Guru; instead, meditate on the myriad virtues of the Divine.

ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਏਕ ਰਸ ਜਾਨਹੁਂ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਨਹਿਂ ਕਾਇ ।

sadaa anand ek ras jaanahun janam maran gur ke nahin kaae

Perceive the Guru as the embodiment of divine bliss, eternally immersed in that singular essence; birth or death do not pertain to the Guru.

ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਹੇਤੁ ਤਨ ਧਾਰਹਿਂ ਜਿਮ ਨਭ ਮਹਿਂ ਘਨ ਹੁਇ ਬਿਦਤਾਇ ॥੧੯॥

praupakaar het tan dhaarahin jim nabh mahin ghan hue bidataae ||19||

The Divine assumes a human form for the sole purpose of benefiting others, analogous to how clouds manifest in the sky. ||19||

ਕਰਿ ਬਰਖਾ ਸੁਖ ਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਜਗ ਕੋ ਪੁਨ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਮਹਿਂ ਲੈ ਹੁਇ ਜਾਇ ।

kar barakhaa sukh de kar jag ko pun akaash mahin lai hue jaae

Just like the clouds bring rain, providing immense pleasure to the world, and then dissolve back into the sky,

ਤਿਮ ਤਨ ਗੁਰ ਸੁਤੰਤ੍ਰ ਹੁਇ ਧਾਰਹਿਂ ਸਿਖ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੇ ਬਨਹਿਂ ਸਹਾਇ ।

tim tan gur sutantr hue dhaarahin sikh sevak ke banahin sahaae

Similarly, the Guru, in their independence, takes a human form and becomes the support of their Sikh servants.

ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਭਗਤਿ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਮਾਰਗ ਮਹਿਂ ਜਗਤ ਲਗਾਇ ।

gayaan bhagat upadeshan kar kai shubh maarag mahin jagat lagaae

By imparting Gyān (wisdom) and Bhagti (devotional love), the Guru guides the world onto the righteous path.

ਪੁਨ ਸੁਛੰਦ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਸਿਧਾਰਹਿਂ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਿਮ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੨੦॥

pun suchhand paralok sidhaarahin tin kaaran kim shok upaae ||20||

Thereafter, they transition to the afterlife at their own will. So why should one grieve for this? ||20||

ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਹੁ ਜਨਮ ਸੁਧਾਰਹੁ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਨ ਧਾਰਹੁ ਜਨ ਸਮੁਦਾਇ ।

naam uchaarahu janam sudhaarahu kashatt na dhaarahu jan samudaae

Recite the Divine name, enhance your life, let not the people be overwhelmed by grief.

ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਬਾਕ ਹਟੇ ਸਭਿ ਰੋਦਤਿ ਹੁਇ ਤੂਸ਼ਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਧਰਾਇ ।

sun kai baak hatte sabh rodat hue tooshan gur gayaan dharaae

Hearing the Guru's words, everyone stopped crying, became quiet and embodied the Guru's wisdom.

ਜੁਗ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਪਠਾਵਨਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਮਿਲੌ ਅਗਵਾਇ ।

jug asavaar patthaavan keene aaveh sikh milau agavaae

The Guru then instructed two horsemen, "A Sikh is on their way - go and meet them.

ਜਾਹੁ ਪਲਾਵਤਿ ਪੁਨ ਹਟਿ ਆਵੌ ਦੀਜੈ ਸੁਧਿ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਸੁਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੨੧॥

jaahu palaavat pun hatt aavau deejai sudh tis te sun paae ||21||

Ride swiftly and then return. Relay back to us the message you receive." ||21||

ਦਈ ਨਿਹਾਰੀ ਹਯਨਿ ਅਰੂਢੇ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਪੁਰਿ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਗ ਚਾਲਿ ।

dee nihaaree hayan aroodte dilee pur ke maarag chaal

After feeding their horses, the warriors mounted and took the road to Delhi.

ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਗਮਨੇ ਇਕ ਸਮ ਹੀ ਦੇਖਤਿ ਨਰ ਹਿਤ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਮਾਲ ।

nis baasur gamane ik sam hee dekhat nar hit sikh samaal

They traveled day and night, scrutinizing the faces of the people they met, searching for the Sikh.

ਕੇਤਿਕ ਮਜ਼ਲ ਗਏ ਅਵਲੋਕ੍ਯੋ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਰ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਲਪੇਟੇ ਜਾਲ ।

ketik mazal ge avalokayo gur sir basatr lapette jaal

After covering a significant distance, they spotted a man carrying a bundle wrapped in cloth - it was the Guru's head.

ਅਪਨੇ ਸੀਸ ਉਠਾਵਨ ਕੀਨਸਿ ਇਤ ਉਤ ਪਿਖਤਿ ਸਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਬਿਸਾਲ ॥੨੨॥

apane sees utthaavan keenas it ut pikhat satraas bisaal ||22||

The man had placed the Guru's head upon his own, and he looked around sorrowfully, engulfed in distress. ||22||

ਕੀਨਿ ਚਿਨਾਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਬੰਦਨ ਕਹੁ ਸੁਧਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਜਥਾ ਬ੍ਰਿਤਾਂਤ ।

keen chinaar mile kar bandan kahu sudh gur kee jathaa britaant

Upon recognising him, they met and bowed, asking, "Tell us the entire account of the Guru's happenings."

ਸੁਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਭਨੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਢਿਗ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਰ ਚਹੌਂ ਅਨੰਦ ਪੁਰਿ ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਤਿ ।

sun tin bhanee mohi dtig gur sir chahauan anand pur le kar jaat

Hearing this, the Sikh replied, "I carry the Guru's head with me; I intend to take it to Anandpur.

ਤੁਮ ਕਿਤ ਜਾਹੁ ਹਟਹੁ ਅਬਿ ਪਾਛੇ ਬੀਤੀ ਤਿਮ ਚਹਿਂ ਗੁਰ ਜਿਸ ਭਾਂਤਿ ।

tum kit jaahu hattahu ab paachhe beetee tim chahin gur jis bhaant

Where are you two headed? Turn back now. What has occurred has happened according to the Guru's will.

ਗਮਨਹੁ ਤੂਰਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਸਦਨ ਸੁਧਿ ਪੁਨ ਮੈਂ ਭਨਹੁਂ ਆਇ ਸਭਿ ਬਾਤ ॥੨੩॥

gamanahu tooran dehu sadan sudh pun main bhanahun aae sabh baat ||23||

Depart quickly, deliver the news to the congregation; upon my arrival, I'll recount everything. ||23||

ਕੀਰਤਪੁਰਿ ਮੈਂ ਠਹਿਰਨ ਕਰਿਹੌਂ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਦੇਹੁਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸੋਢੀਨ ।

I will take rest at Kiratpur, where many shrines of the Guru's Sodhi lineage exist.

ਆਗੇ ਗੁਰ ਇੱਛਾ ਜਿਮ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਮ ਬਰਤਹਿਂ ਆਛੀ ਮਨ ਚੀਨਿ ।

aage gur ichhaa jim hovai tim baratahin aachhee man cheen

Whatever is the Guru's will, that is what will transpire. I have accepted this wholeheartedly."

ਸੁਨਿ ਦੋਨਹੁਂ ਬਿਰਤਾਂਤ ਹਟੇ ਤਬਿ ਗਮਨੇ ਆਨੰਦਪੁਰਿ ਮਗ ਲੀਨਿ ।

sun donahun birataant hatte tab gamane aanandapur mag leen

Upon hearing his words, the two retreated, setting off back to Anandpur.

ਸ਼ੀਘ੍ਰ ਕਰਤਿ ਸਭਿ ਪੰਥ ਉਲੰਘੇ ਬਰੇ ਸਦਨ ਹਯ ਬੰਧਨਿ ਕੀਨਿ ॥੨੪॥

sheeghr karat sabh panth ulanghe bare sadan hay bandhan keen ||24||

They travelled so swiftly that they soon arrived back in Anandpur and tethered their horses. ||24||

ਗੁਰ ਢਿਗ ਪਹੁਂਚਿ ਬੰਦਨਾ ਠਾਨੀ ਬਰਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਕੇਰ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੰਤ ।

Arriving at the Guru's abode, they bowed down and recounted the entire episode of what had happened in Delhi.

ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਸ਼ੋਕਮਾਨ ਸਭਿ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਨੀਰ ਬਿਲੋਚਨ ਤੇ ਨਿਚੁਰੰਤਿ ।

sun kar shokamaan sabh hvai kar neer bilochan te nichurant

Listening to their narration, everyone was consumed by grief, with tears beginning to flow from their eyes.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਰਜੇ ਸਗਰੇ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਮਸੰਦਨਿ ਸੰਗ ਭਨੰਤਿ ।

shree gobind singh baraje sagare brind masandan sang bhanant

Sri Guru Gobind Singh halted them all and spoke to the congregation of Masands.

ਤ੍ਯਾਰੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਰਬ ਗਨ ਖਰਚਹੁ ਬਨਹਿ ਬਿਮਾਨ ਅਧਿਕ ਦੁਤਿਵੰਤ ॥੨੫॥

tayaaree karahu darab gan kharachahu baneh bimaan adhik dutivant ||25||

Make preparations, expend abundant resources, and prepare an exceptionally elegant chariot. ||25||

ਕੰਚਨ ਪੁਸ਼ਪ ਆਦਿ ਸਬਿ ਕਰੀਅਹਿ ਚੰਦਨ ਚਾਰੁ ਲ੍ਯਾਇ ਤਤਕਾਲ ।

kanchan pushap aad sab kareeeh chandan chaar layaae tatakaal

Collect all sorts of gold and silver flowers and beautiful sandalwood.

ਫੂਲਨ ਕੀ ਮਾਲਾ ਗਨ ਸਿਰਜਹੁ ਪਸ਼ਮੰਬਰ ਲਿਹੁ ਮੋਲ ਬਿਸਾਲ ।

foolan kee maalaa gan sirajahu pashamanbar lihu mol bisaal

Prepare numerous garlands of flowers and acquire abundant silk clothing.

ਅਨਿਕ ਸੁਗੰਧਨਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਕੇਲਨਿ ਜਵ ਤਿਲ ਘਿੱ੍ਰਤ ਸੰਚੀਅਹਿ ਜਾਲ ।

anik sugandhan karahu sakelan jav til ghirat sancheeeh jaal

Gather an assortment of fragrances, and compile flour, sesame oil, and clarified butter."

ਸੁਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਹੁਕਮ ਪਠਾਏ ਨਰ ਗਨ ਬਡੇ ਨਗਰ ਤੇ ਆਨਹੁਂ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨੬॥

sun gur hukam patthaae nar gan badde nagar te aanahun bhaal ||26||

Hearing the Guru's command, he sent out many men instructing, "Search for these items in the larger cities." ||26||

ਇਮ ਤ੍ਯਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਕਰੀ ਸਰਬ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਕੀ ਜੋਇ ।

In this manner, the Satguru, Guru Gobind Singh, made all the necessary preparations,

ਉਤ ਤੇ ਲੇ ਕੀਰਤਪੁਰੇ ਪਹੁਂਚ੍ਯੋ ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੋਇ ॥੨੭॥

aut te le keeratapure pahunchayo gur sikh soe ||27||

And that Gursikh reached Kiratpur with Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's head. ||27||
