The Guru's Charitable Feast

ਸਕਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਕੀ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਧਨਿ ਜਥਾ ਬਤਾਇ

sakal kriaa kar pitaa kee bradhan jathaa bataae

All rituals for his father (Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji), were completed, as counselled by the elders.

ਜਹਿਂ ਕਹਿਂ ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਆਇਗੇ ਸਿਖ ਮਸੰਦ ਸਮੁਦਾਇ ॥੧॥

jahin kahin sun sun aaeige sikh masand samudaae ||1||

Hearing the news from wherever they were, the Sikhs and Masands congregated. ||1||

ਬੇਦੀ ਕੁਲ ਤੇਹਣ ਮਿਲੇ ਭੱਲੇ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਭਿ ਆਏ

bedee kul tehan mile bhale sun sabh aae

Upon hearing the news [of Guru Tegh Bahadur's shaheedi], the Bedi, Trehan, and Bhalla clans came.

ਬੈਠਿ ਬੈਠਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਕਟ ਰਹੇ ਸਿਵਰ ਨਿਜ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

baitth baitth gur ke nikatt rahe sivar nij paae ||2||

Sitting around the Guru, they set up their camps. ||2||

ਤਿਮ ਗੁਜਰੀ ਅਤਿ ਸ਼ੋਕਹਿ ਉਪਾਇ

tim gujaree at shokeh upaae

ਨਿਤ ਬਹ੍ਯੋ ਦ੍ਰਿਗਨਿ ਤੇ ਨੀਰ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥

nit behayo drigan te neer jaae ||3||

Mata Nanaki started to mourn, with tears cascading down as her heart ached with sorrow. In a similar manner, Mata Gujri too found herself immersed in deep mourning, tears ceaselessly streaming from her eyes.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ਭੇਜੇ ਮਸੰਦ

ਦੇਹੁ ਮਾਤ ਜਾਇ ਧੀਰਜ ਬਿਲੰਦ

gur sadan shok hovant naanhi

ਇਕ ਰਸ ਅਨੰਦ ਮਹਿਂ ਸਥਿਤਿ ਪਾਹਿਂ ॥੪॥

eik ras anand mahin sathit paahin ||4||

The Satguru, upon reflection, sent the Masands with a message, "Console the mothers, and infuse them with fortitude and resilience. There should be no place for grief in the Guru's abode, only the composed blissful flavour of the divine."

ਸੁਨਿ ਗਏ ਮਹਿਲ ਦੇਖੀ ਸੁ ਜਾਇ

sun ge mahil dekhee su jaae

ਕਰਿ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਬੈਠੇ ਸੁ ਥਾਇਂ

kar namasakaar baitthe su thaaein

ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਮਾਤਾ ਸੁਣੇਹੁ

kar jor kehayo maataa sunehu

ਤੁਮ ਉਚਿਤ ਨਾਂਹਿ ਏਤਿਕ ਸਨੇਹੁ ॥੫॥

tum uchit naanhi etik sanehu ||5||

Upon receiving the Guru's message, they promptly went to the dwelling of the mothers. There, they respectfully greeted them and seated themselves close by. With hands respectfully joined, they spoke, " “Mothers, [please] listen to our words. It does not behove you to feel such throws of affection."

ਗੁਰ ਤਜ੍ਯੋ ਦੇਹਿ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ਸੁਛੰਦ

gur tajayo dehi hvai kai suchhand

ਜਗ ਧਰਮ ਰਖ੍ਯੋ ਹਿੰਦੁਨਿ ਬਿਲੰਦ

jag dharam rakhayo hindun biland

ਤੁਰਕੇਸ਼ ਸੀਸ ਦੋਸ਼ਹਿ ਚਢਾਇ

turakesh sees dosheh chadtaae

ਤਨ ਅੰਤ ਸਮਾ ਪਹੁਂਚ੍ਯੋ ਸੁ ਆਇ ॥੬॥

tan ant samaa pahunchayo su aae ||6||

[The servants continued]: "The Guru has willingly relinquished His body while preserving the sacred Dharma of the Hindus. Concurrently, he laid a curse upon the head of the ruler of Turks, (Aurangzeb), as His own body neared its earthly end.

ਅਬਿ ਤਿਨ ਸਥਾਨ ਸੁਤ ਕੋ ਬਿਲੋਕ

ab tin sathaan sut ko bilok

ਮਨ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਤੇ ਰਾਖਿ ਰੋਕਿ

man britee shok te raakh rok

ਥਿਤ ਹੁਤੋ ਨਿਕਟ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ

thit huto nikatt bhraataa kripaal

ਸੁਨਿ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਕਹਿ ਤਾਤਕਾਲ ॥੭॥

sun ih prasang keh taatakaal ||7||

Now, behold your son in his rightful position, and restrain your mind from succumbing to such sorrow." In that moment, Kripal Chand, the brother [of Mata Gujri Ji], was seated close by. Having heard these words, he responded without delay.

ਹੇ ਭਗਨਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿਂ ਬਿਚਾਰ

he bhagan lehu chit mahin bichaar

ਨਹਿਂ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਕਬਹੁਂ ਜੋ ਹੋਨਹਾਰ

nahin mitteh kabahun jo honahaar

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸ਼ਲੋਕ ਲਿਖਿ ਕੈ ਪਠਾਇ

satigur shalok likh kai patthaae

ਤਿਹ ਅਰਥ ਰਿਦੇ ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਨਹਿਂ ਬਸਾਇਂ ॥੮॥

tih arath ride kayon nahin basaaein ||8||

"My sister, take these words into account. Fate can never be erased. The Satguru had composed and sent some stanzas for you. Why have you not internalised their meanings in your heart?

ਤਿਨ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਨਿ ਹੈ ਬਿਲੰਦ

tin putr guroo ban hai biland

ਜਿਨ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਦੀਖਤਿ ਸੁਛੰਦ

jin ko prataap deekhat suchhand

ਤਿਹ ਪਿਖਹੁ ਆਪ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਅਨੰਦ

tih pikhahu aap keejeh anand

ਪ੍ਰਿਯ ਸਭਿਨਿ ਚਕੋਰਨਿ ਮਨਹੁਂ ਚੰਦ ॥੯॥

priy sabhin chakoran manahun chand ||9||

Observe, Their son Guru [Gobind Singh] will ascend to greatness, whose self-evident radiance is glorious. Look towards him, take joy in his presence. For all of us, he is as beloved as the moon is to the chakora bird.

ਕਹਿ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਤੁਮ ਪਹਿ ਪਠਾਇ

keh baar baar tum peh patthaae

ਹਿਤ ਧਰਹੁ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਦੇਹੁ ਜਾਇ

hit dharahu dilaasaa dehu jaae

ਸੁਨਿ ਦੁਹੁਨਿ ਮਾਤ ਚਿਤ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ

sun duhun maat chit shubh bichaar

ਤਜਿ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਦੀਨਿ ਸੁਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧੦॥

taj shok deen sut prem dhaar ||10||

The Guru, through his Masands, had sent this consoling message to you repeatedly. Please, accept it with love." Hearing this, both mothers considered Kripal Chand's encouraging words, abandoned their sorrow, and turned their affection towards their son.

ਜਿਮ ਪਾਗ ਬਾਂਧਿਬੇ ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਇ

jim paag baandhibe reet hoe

ਚਹਿਯੰਤਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨਵਾਇ ਸੋਇ

chahiyant vasat anavaae soe

ਇਹ ਠਾਂਇ ਲਭੈ ਤਬਿ ਮੋਲ ਲੇਹੁ

eih tthaane labhai tab mol lehu

ਨਤੁ ਅਪਰ ਨਗਰ ਧਨ ਭੇਜਿ ਦੇਹੁ ॥੧੧॥

nat apar nagar dhan bhej dehu ||11||

[At that point, the Masands were instructed]: "As per the custom of Dastarbandi, certain items are required. If you can find them here, make a bulk purchase. If not, send funds to procure them from larger towns."

ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਮਸੰਦ ਪਠਿ ਦਰਬ ਦੀਨਿ

sun sun masand patth darab deen

ਗਨ ਪਾਗ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਨਵਾਇ ਲੀਨਿ

gan paag basatr anavaae leen

ਬਹੁ ਮੋਲ ਪਸ਼ਮ ਅੰਬਰ ਮੰਗਾਇ

bahu mol pasham anbar mangaae

ਪੁਨ ਚੀਰ ਰੇਸ਼ਮੀ ਲੇ ਧਰਾਇ ॥੧੨॥

pun cheer reshamee le dharaae ||12||

Upon hearing the instruction, the Masands disbursed the funds, procuring a variety of dastārs and other pieces of fabric. They requested and procured high-quality wool cloth, as well as beautiful silk fabric.

ਗਨ ਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਦਰਬ ਦੇ ਘ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਿਸ਼ਾਲ

gan graam darab de ghrit bishaal

ਸਰਕਰਾ ਸੇਤ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਚਿ ਜਾਲ

sarakaraa set kar sanch jaal

ਇੱਤ੍ਯਾਦਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਭਿ ਤ੍ਯਾਰ ਕੀਨਿ

eitayaad vasat sabh tayaar keen

ਜਿਤਨੀ ਸੁ ਚਾਹਿ ਸੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਲੀਨਿ ॥੧੩॥

jitanee su chaeh so adhik leen ||13||

[The Masands] disbursed funds across numerous villages to procure substantial amounts of ghee and amassed a significant stock of white sugar. They prepared all the requisite items for the ritual, gathering even more than what was initially deemed necessary.

ਕਹਿਯੰਤਿ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨਿਯੰਤਿ ਦੇਸ਼

kahiyant baat suniyant desh

ਚਹਿਯੰਤ ਚਿਤ ਆਵਤਿ ਅਸ਼ੇਸ਼

chahiyant chit aavat ashesh

ਸੇਵਕ ਮਸੰਦ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹੈ ਸੁ ਤ੍ਯਾਰ

sevak masand hvai hai su tayaar

ਬਹੁ ਮੋਲ ਲੇਤਿ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਚਾਰੁ ॥੧੪॥

bahu mol let dasataar chaar ||14||

News [about the dastārbandi] circulated and reached far and wide across the regions, prompting countless aspirants to make their way to the Guru with longing in their hearts. Attendants and Masands alike readied themselves for the occasion; they brought with them several luxurious dastārs, each one of significant value.

ਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਟੋਰਿ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਸੁਨਾਹਿਂ

ਗੁਰ ਬਯ ਨਵੀਨ ਅਭਿਖੇਕ ਤਾਂਹਿ

gur bay naveen abhikhek taanhi

ਬਹੁ ਮੇਲ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਪੁਰਿ ਅਨੰਦ

bahu mel hoe hai pur anand

ਮਿਲਿ ਚਲਹੁ ਸ਼ੀਘ੍ਰ ਉਤਸਵ ਬਿਲੰਦ ॥੧੫॥

mil chalahu sheeghr utasav biland ||15||

As they gathered this congregation of devotees, they spread the magnificence of the Guru, saying: "The Guru is still young, but he is to receive the rite of consecration [abhishek]. A grand assembly will take place in Anandpur; quickly get together and make your journey to this grand celebration."

ਚਹੁੰ ਦਿਸ਼ਿਨਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੁਨਿ ਤੁਰੰਤ

ਨਹਿਂ ਕਰਤਿ ਬਿਲਮ ਆਵਨਿ ਕਰੰਤਿ

nahin karat bilam aavan karant

ਮਗ ਮਹਿਂ ਬਹੀਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਿਸਾਲ

mag mahin baheer sangat bisaal

ਮਿਲਿ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਪਹੁਂਚਹਿਂ ਉਤਾਲ ॥੧੬॥

mil brind brind pahunchahin utaal ||16||

Upon hearing the news, Sikhs from all four directions hastily began their journey, not wasting any time. The roads became crowded with a large congregation of Sikhs, each group eager and excited to reach Anandpur.

ਬਹੁ ਭੀਰ ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਤਿ ਜਾਤਿ

ਸਿਖ ਮਿਲਹਿਂ ਪਰਸਪਰ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਬਾਤ

ਤਨ ਬਯ ਨਵੀਨ ਮੁਖ ਮਨਹੁਂ ਚੰਦ ॥੧੭॥

tan bay naveen mukh manahun chand ||17||

An enormous gathering was converging in Anandpur. The Sikhs who had arrived engaged in discourse amongst themselves. As they listened and recited the virtues of the Satguru, a sense of sheer bliss pervaded among them. Despite his youthful age and small stature, the radiance emanating from the Guru's face was likened to the luminous glow of the moon.

ਸਭਿ ਕਰਤਿ ਨਮੋ ਦਰਸੰਤਿ ਰੂਪ

sabh karat namo darasant roop

ਮਤਿ ਚਤੁਰ ਚਪਲ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਅਨੂਪ

mat chatur chapal sundar anoop

ਗੁਰ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਮੁਖ ਭਨਤਿ ਬੈਨ

gur dhan dhan mukh bhanat bain

ਚੰਚਲ ਸਲਾਜ ਬਿਸਤਿਰਤਿ ਨੈਨ ॥੧੮॥

chanchal salaaj bisatirat nain ||18||

All who laid eyes upon the Guru's form paid their obeisance. They marveled at his sharp intellect, agile wit, and unmatched beauty. The phrase "Blessed, blessed is the Guru!" was repeated by many as they admired his wide, alert, and effervescent eyes, further highlighting his radiant demeanor.

ਤਬਿ ਸਭਿ ਮਸੰਦ ਸੋਂ ਕਹਤਿ ਮਾਤ

ਕੀਜਹਿ ਸੁ ਜੱਗ੍ਯ ਲਹਿ ਬਹੁਤ ਭਾਂਤਿ

keejeh su jagay leh bahut bhaant

ਗਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਤ ਜਿਤ ਕਿਤ ਹਕਾਰਿ

gan saadh sant jit kit hakaar

ਸਨਮਾਨ ਸਹਿਤ ਦੀਜਹਿ ਅਹਾਰ ॥੧੯॥

sanamaan sahit deejeh ahaar ||19||

At that moment, Mata Ji addressed all the Masands and proposed: "Let us organise a Jagya, a ceremonial feast of generosity and goodwill. Extend invitations to various Sadhus and Sants from far and wide. With the utmost respect and reverence, provide them with nourishment."

pakavaan karan haare hakaar

ਸਭਿ ਜਥਾ ਜੋਗ ਪਰਬਿਰਤਿ ਕਾਰ ॥੨੦॥

sabh jathaa jog parabirat kaar ||20||

Upon hearing this decree, the Guru's officials swiftly set about executing the tasks as directed. They summoned the cooks and provided them with detailed instructions on how to prepare the feast. The entire operation began to unfold, with every group dutifully engaged in their assigned duties.

ਮਿਸ਼ਟਾਨ ਆਨਿ ਘ੍ਰਿਤ ਅਧਿਕ ਦੀਨਿ

mishattaan aan ghrit adhik deen

ਗੋਧੂਮ ਚੂਨ ਮੈਦਾ ਸੁ ਲੀਨਿ

godhoom choon maidaa su leen

ਬਹੁ ਪੂਪ ਪੂਰਿਕਾ ਤਬਿ ਪਕਾਇ

bahu poop poorikaa tab pakaae

ਸ਼ੁਭ ਥਾਨ ਬਿਖੈ ਅੰਬਾਰ ਲਾਇ ॥੨੧॥

shubh thaan bikhai anbaar laae ||21||

They supplied ample ghee (clarified butter) and sugar, in addition to wheat and fine flour. Numerous small and large ਪੂਰੀ (pūṛī, a type of fried bread) were then prepared. These were placed and stacked in an auspicious location, creating a significant pile of them.

ਬਹੁ ਦੀਹ ਕਰਾਹੇ ਦਿਯ ਚੜਾਇ

ਕਰਿ ਤ੍ਯਾਰ ਤਿਹਾਵਲ ਧਰਤਿ ਜਾਇਂ

kar tayaar tihaaval dharat jaaein

ਬਹੁ ਬਰੇ ਕਚੌਰੀ ਤ੍ਯਾਰ ਕੀਨਿ

bahu bare kachauaree tayaar keen

ਗਨ ਲਗੇ ਠਾਨਿ ਤੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥੨੨॥

gan lage tthaan tooran prabeen ||22||

They offered large and deep pans, and kept getting ready and setting aside portions of Karah Parshad. Large and thick ਕਚੌਰੀ (kachori, deep-fried pastries) were also prepared. The fine chefs were now busily preparing these dishes.

ਭਾ ਪਾਕ ਸਿੱਧ ਬਿਧਿ ਬਿਬਿਧਿ ਕੇਰ

ਗਨ ਪੂਪ ਪੂਰਿਕਾ ਲਗਤਿ ਢੇਰ

jahin jahin mahant shubh bekh sant

ਤਹਿਂ ਤਹਿਂ ਹਕਾਰਿ ਲ੍ਯਾਵਤਿ ਕਰੰਤਿ ॥੨੩॥

tahin tahin hakaar layaavat karant ||23||

A variety of excellent dishes had been meticulously prepared, and a large assortment of large and small puris had been amassed. Wherever there were elegantly attired Mahants or Sants, they were invited and ushered in.

ਆਵਤਿ ਸਮੂਹ ਜਿਤ ਕਿਤ ਜਮਾਤ

aavat samooh jit kit jamaat

ਬਹੁ ਬਿੱਪ੍ਰ ਆਇਂ ਅਰੁ ਅਪਰ ਜਾਤਿ

bahu bipr aaein ar apar jaat

ਸਭਿ ਜਥਾ ਜੋਗ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਸਾਥ

sabh jathaa jog sanamaan saath

ਚਢਿ ਊਚ ਮਹਲ ਪਰ ਪਿਖਤਿ ਨਾਥ ॥੨੪॥

chadt aooch mehal par pikhat naath ||24||

Every group that arrived was welcomed to partake in the feast, including many Brahmins and individuals from other castes. All guests were treated with fitting respect and dignity. The Master (Guru Gobind Singh Ji) oversees the entire event from atop a high place, observing the activities unfold.

ਸਗਰੇ ਮਸੰਦ ਪੰਗਤਿ ਬਨਾਇ

sagare masand pangat banaae

ਜਸ ਉਚਿਤ ਪਿਖਹਿਂ ਤਸ ਥਲ ਬਿਠਾਇਂ

jas uchit pikhahin tas thal bitthaaein

ਬਹੁ ਭਈ ਭੀਰ ਦੇ ਧੀਰ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ

bahu bhee bheer de dheer brind

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਟਿਕਾਇ ਪੰਕਤਿ ਬਿਲੰਦ ॥੨੫॥

keh keh ttikaae pankat biland ||25||

All the Masands then arranged the congregants into rows for the communal dining, known as ਪੰਗਤਿ (pangat). They seated everyone according to their appropriate place. The crowd had grown considerably large. The organizers were providing instructions, creating extensive rows for the orderly serving of the meal.

ਗਨ ਲਗੇ ਪਰੋਸਨ ਕੋ ਅਹਾਰ

gan lage parosan ko ahaar

ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਹਿਂ ਸੁ ਜਿਤਿਕ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ਡਾਰਿ

tripatahin su jitik ik baar ddaar

ਤੂਰਨ ਕਰੰਤਿ ਸਭਿ ਅੱਗ੍ਰ ਦੀਨਿ

tooran karant sabh agr deen

ਪੁਨ ਲਗੇ ਅਚਨ ਸਭਿ ਸ੍ਵਾਦ ਲੀਨਿ ॥੨੬॥

pun lage achan sabh svaad leen ||26||

Numerous servers began distributing the meal. Everyone felt satiated with just a single hearty serving, and there was no need for anyone to ask for seconds. The food was promptly served to everyone present, and then everyone started partaking of the meal, savoring its taste.

ਬਹੁ ਕਰਤਿ ਸਰਾਹਨ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ

bahu karat saraahan baar baar

ਮੁਖ ਕਹਤਿ ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਨ ਹੁਇ ਅਸ ਅਹਾਰ

mukh kehat kayon na hue as ahaar

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਹੇਤੁ ਗੁਰ ਨੰਦ ਕੀਨਿ

guradev het gur nand keen

ਜੋ ਆਪ ਕਰਨ ਕਾਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥੨੭॥

jo aap karan kaaran prabeen ||27||

They praised the meal repeatedly and wondered aloud, "How could such a feast not be prepared out of love for the divine Guru by the Guru's son (Guru Gobind Singh Ji), who himself is the Doer and Cause of all actions?

ਕਿਨ ਪੰਚਾਂਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਰਤਾਇ ਦੀਨਿ

Some were served the sacrament karah prashad, while to others, they offered large and small puris. Cumin-infused yogurt was generously given. Simply a glance, without a plea, would be enough for the sevadars to serve more to the guests.

ਹੁਇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਖਾਇਂ ਸ੍ਵਾਦਿਲ ਬਿਸਾਲ

hue tripat khaaein svaadil bisaal

ਕਹਿਂ ਲੇਹੁ ਲੇਹੁ ਫਿਰਤੇ ਉਤਾਲ

ਬਹੁ ਮਧੁਰ ਤੁਰਸ਼ ਅਰੁ ਤਿਕਤ ਜੋਇ

bahu madhur turash ar tikat joe

ਸਭਿ ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਅਚਵੰਤਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੨੯॥

sabh sane sane achavant soe ||29||

Everyone was thoroughly satisfied, delighting greatly in the food. Eagerly, the servers would go around, urging, "Please have some more, have some more!" Everyone relished all the flavors – sweet, sour, and spicy.

ਇਕ ਬਿਮਲ ਬਾਰਿ ਦੇ ਬਾਰਿ ਬਾਰਿ

eik bimal baar de baar baar

ਚਿਤ ਮੁਦਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਸ੍ਵਾਦਤਿ ਅਹਾਰ

chit mudat tripat svaadat ahaar

ਪੁਨ ਪਾਨਿ ਪਾਨ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਨ ਧੋਇ

pun paan paan kar paan dhoe

ਗੁਰ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੋਇ ॥੩੦॥

gur dhan dhan ih shabad hoe ||30||

They kept pouring out crisp water time and time again. People, content in their hearts, were savouring the delightful food, their satisfaction lingering. After quenching their thirst with water, they washed their hands. The air filled with voices exclaiming, "Blessed, blessed is the great Guru!"

ਤਬਿ ਮਾਤ ਸਹਿਤ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੁਜਾਨ

tab maat sahit satigur sujaan

ਬਹੁ ਦਰਬ ਮਸੰਦਨ ਦੀਨਿ ਪਾਨ

bahu darab masandan deen paan

ਦਿਹੁ ਸਭਿਨਿ ਜਾਇ ਨਹਿਂ ਰੌਰ ਹੋਇ

dihu sabhin jaae nahin rauar hoe

ਬਿਧਿ ਸਾਥ ਲੇਹੁ ਨਹਿਂ ਛੂਛ ਕੋਇ ॥੩੧॥

bidh saath lehu nahin chhoochh koe ||31||

Following that, the astute Satguru, accompanied by Mata Ji, put ample money in the hands of the Masands. He instructed, "Go and distribute this to everyone, ensure there's no confusion or disturbance. Carry this out in an orderly manner so that no one leaves empty-handed."

ਲੇ ਗਨ ਮਸੰਦ ਸਭਿਹੂਨਿ ਦੀਨਿ

le gan masand sabhihoon deen

ਦਿਜ ਸੰਤ ਮਹੰਤਨਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਚੀਨਿ

dij sant mahantan adhik cheen

ਹਰਖੇ ਸੰਬੂਹ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਰਾਹਿਂ

harakhe sanbooh bahu kar saraahin

ਜਸ ਲਿਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਗੁਰ ਜੱਗ੍ਯ ਮਾਂਹਿ ॥੩੨॥

jas liyo pratham gur jagay maanhi ||32||

The Masands, having received the money, distributed it to everyone. They gave a little more to the Brahmins, Sants, and Mahants. Overwhelmed with joy, everyone started praising the Guru, exclaiming, "The Guru has earned great praise from this first charitable feast"

ਗੁਰ ਸਕਲ ਕਲਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਬਿਲੰਦ

gur sakal kalaa pooran biland

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਬਿੰਦ ਕੇ ਹੁਇ ਮਨਿੰਦ

ਉਤਸਾਹ ਬੁਧਿ ਤੈਸੋ ਸੁਭਾਇ

autasaah budh taiso subhaae

ਉਰ ਅਤਿ ਉਦਾਰ ਜਾਨੇ ਸੁ ਜਾਇਂ ॥੩੩॥

aur at udaar jaane su jaaein ||33||

[They continued]: "The Guru, encompassing all forms of art and knowledge, was perfect and expansive in every way, evoking in one's mind the essence of Sri Guru Hargobind. His enthusiasm, intellect, and innate nature were uniquely vibrant. Known for his extraordinary generosity, it was understood that his heart was abundant in benevolence...

ਜਨ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਬਿਲੰਦੈ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ

jan brind bilandai kar nihaal

ਬਖਸ਼ਹਿਂ ਅਨੰਦ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ

bakhashahin anand hvai kar kripaal

ਸੁਨਿ ਦੁਤੀ ਕਹੈ ਅਚਰਜ ਸੁਨਾਇ

sun dutee kahai acharaj sunaae

ਇਨ ਪਿਤਾ ਪਿਤਾਮਾ ਕੈਸਿ ਆਹਿ ॥੩੪॥

ein pitaa pitaamaa kais aahi ||34||

...He delights countless with such a vast multitude, bestowing happiness with graciousness," [people say with joy]. Hearing this, one person would turn to another in wonder, asking, "What were his father and grandfather like?"

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਅਰਜਨ ਅਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ

shree arajan ar gur raamadaas

ਨਿਜ ਦਾਸ ਅਨੇਕਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਖਲਾਸ

nij daas anekan kar khalaas

ਅਸ ਬੰਸ ਬਿਖੈ ਜਿਨ ਜਨਮ ਆਹਿ

as bans bikhai jin janam aahi

ਬਡਭਾਗ ਜਿਨਹੁਂ ਸੇ ਰਹਹਿਂ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੩੫॥

baddabhaag jinahun se rahahin paahi ||35||

[They would respond], "Sri Guru Arjan and Guru Ram Das, they were the ones who granted liberation to countless of their servants. From such a lineage, Guru Gobind Singh was born. It's indeed a great fortune for those who remain connected to such a family."

ਇੱਤ੍ਯਾਦਿ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਕਹਤਿ ਸਰਬ

eitayaad keeratee kehat sarab

ਭੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਦੱਛਨਾ ਦੀਨਿ ਦਰਬ

bhe tripat dachhanaa deen darab

ਬਹੁ ਦੇਤਿ ਆਸ਼ਿਖਾ ਅਨਂਦ ਪਾਇ

bahu det aashikhaa anand paae

ਗੁਰ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਆਰਬਲ ਬਡ ਬਧਾਇ ॥੩੬॥

gur putr aarabal badd badhaae ||36||

Thus, they all extolled the Guru's praises. In delight, they accepted the money given as an offering. Experiencing immense bliss, they gave countless blessings, wishing for the long life of the Guru's son.

ਜਬਿ ਲਗੇ ਜਗਤ ਮਹਿਂ ਜਮਨ ਗੰਗ

jab lage jagat mahin jaman gang

ਤਬਿ ਲਗੈ ਜਿਵਹੁ ਹੁਇ ਹਰਖ ਸੰਗ

tab lagai jivahu hue harakh sang

ਇਮ ਭਯੋ ਜੱਗ ਨਰ ਭੀਰ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ

eim bhayo jag nar bheer brind

ਪੁਰਿ ਅਨਂਦ ਬਿਖੈ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਅਤਿ ਅਨੰਦ ॥੩੭॥

pur anand bikhai hvai at anand ||37||

"As long as rivers like Yamuna and Ganga flow through the lands, may you live just as long in great happiness." In this way, there was a significant gathering of people, causing a delightful bustle at the feast organised by the Guru. Everyone in the city of Anandpur felt a profound sense of bliss.

ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਭਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੇ ਬਿਲੰਦ

ਪੁਨ ਅਚ੍ਯੋ ਅਹਾਰ ਜੇਤਿਕ ਮਸੰਦ

ਨਰ ਅਨਿਕ ਦੇਸ਼ ਕੇ ਆਇ ਆਇ

nar anik desh ke aae aae

ਕਰਿ ਦੀਏ ਸਿਵਰ ਚਿਤ ਚਾਇ ਚਾਇ ॥੩੮॥

kar dee sivar chit chaae chaae ||38||

The entire Sikh congregation was thoroughly content, and then, only at the end, did the Masands begin to partake in the food. Many individuals from countless regions made their way to the city, setting up their own camps out of a deep-seated desire to be part of the event.

ਸੋ ਦਿਵਸ ਬਿਤ੍ਯੋ ਪੁਨ ਬੀਤ ਰਾਤਿ

so divas bitayo pun beet raat

ਸਭਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕੌ ਗਾਇਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਤਿ

sabh guroo shabad kau gaaein praat

ਬਡ ਭਯੋ ਕੁਲਾਹਲ ਮੁਦਤਿ ਚੀਤ

badd bhayo kulaahal mudat cheet

ਨਰ ਮਿਲਹਿਂ ਪਰਸਪਰ ਧਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ॥੩੯॥

nar milahin parasapar dhaar preet ||39||

Thus, that day passed and night followed. The next morning, everyone sang the Guru's words (Gurbani). An atmosphere of joyful tumult arose, as people greeted each other warmly, sharing in their mutual love and fellowship.

ਸ਼ੁਭ ਮਾਸ ਫਾਲਗੁਨ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਪੱਖ੍ਯ

shubh maas faalagun pratham pakhay

ਦਿਨ ਪੰਚਮੀ ਸੁ ਗਿਨ ਲਗਨ ਮੁੱਖ੍ਯ

din panchamee su gin lagan mukhay

ਦਸਤਾਰ ਬਾਂਧਿਬੇ ਹੇਤੁ ਸੋਧ

dasataar baandhibe het sodh

ਠਹਿਰਾਇ ਠੀਕ ਜਿਨ ਅਧਿਕ ਬੋਧ ॥੪੦॥

tthahiraae ttheek jin adhik bodh ||40||

After consulting the astrological calendar, they scheduled the Dastarbandi ceremony for the auspicious month of Phagun (February/March), in the first half of the lunar cycle, on the fifth day. They event was fixed by those wise [scholars who had a] profound understanding.

ਜਹਿਂ ਕਹਿਂ ਸੁਨਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਥਮੈ ਪਠਾਇ

jahin kahin sunaae prathamai patthaae

ਸੁਧ ਭਈ ਜਿਨਹੁਂ ਕਰਿ ਬੇਗ ਆਇ

sudh bhee jinahun kar beg aae

ਲਵਪੁਰੀ ਸੁਧਾਸਰ ਆਦਿ ਮੇਲ

lavapuree sudhaasar aad mel

ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਭਿ ਚਲਿਯ ਗੈਲ ॥੪੧॥

sikh sangat sun sabh chaliy gail ||41||

Upon hearing this message first, whoever spread the news to different towns was well-received, and everyone who heard it made haste towards Anandpur. The inhabitants of Lahore and Sudhasar (Amritsar) were among the first to congregate. Upon hearing the news, everyone set off without delay.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਗਦ ਅਮਰ ਪਾਸ

ਮੰਜੀ ਸਥਿਰਨ ਪਦ ਜਿਨ ਅਵਾਸ

nau guran baddaaee bakhash jaahin

ਸਭਿ ਚਲੇ ਆਇਂ ਪੁਰਿ ਅਨਂਦ ਮਾਂਹਿ ॥੪੨॥

sabh chale aaein pur anand maanhi ||42||

Those who resided in the locations where Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Angad Dev Ji, and Guru Amar Das Ji had once been, those who were bestowed the honour of the 'Manji' title by one of the nine Gurus, all of them made their journey towards Anandpur.

chahundishaa nikatt pur graam brind

ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਮੂਹ ਆਨਂਦ ਬਿਲੰਦ ॥੪੩॥

sun sun samooh aanand biland ||43||

The Sikh congregations, with great effort, set up their tents, establishing expansive settlements wherever they could. On all sides of the city, clusters of Sikhs had gathered. Their joy knew no bounds upon hearing the Guru's news.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਆਨਿ ਅਕੋਰਨਿ ਅਰਪਤੇ ਆਨੀ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਧਾਰਿ

aan akoran arapate aanee sharadhaa dhaar

ਧੰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਨ ਹਿੰਦੁ ਕੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਸਿਰ ਦਸਤਾਰ ॥੪੪॥

dhan guroo jin hind kee raakhee sir dasataar ||44||

Upon arrival, they offered generous gifts, fuelled by their profound devotion. [They expressed their gratitude], "Blessed be the Guru, who kept the dastaar [of honour] on the head of the Hindus!"
