ਅਬਿ ਇਹ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਕਹਨਿ ਬਨੈ ਇਸ ਬਾਨ ।

ab ih bhoopat kee kathaa kehan banai is baan

Now it becomes apt to retell the story of this king,

ਗਨ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਤਾ ਸੁਨੀਅਹਿ ਸਕਲ ਬਨਹੁਂ ਸੁਚਿਤ ਸਵਧਾਨ ॥੧॥

gan shrotaa suneeeh sakal banahun suchit savadhaan ||1||

[It is essential that] all attentive readers and listeners gathered remain focused. ||1||

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਧੀਰ ।

shree gur teg bahaadar dheer

[Before the advent of Guru Gobind Singh], the resolute Guru Tegh Bahadur,

ਗਮਨੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਕਾਮਰੂ ਤੀਰ ।

gamane desh kaamaroo teer

set forth towards the region of Kamarupa.

ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਾਜ ਬਨਾਯੋ ।

bishan singh nrip kaaj banaayo

[He went there] to assist Raja Bishan Singh in his mission,

ਤਿਸ ਨਰਿੰਦ੍ਰ ਕੋ ਬੋਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਯੋ ॥੨॥

tis narindr ko bol milaayo ||2||

and summoned a meeting with the ruler there. ||2||

ਜਬਿ ਇਤ ਐਬੋ ਕੀਨੀ ਤ੍ਯਾਰੀ ।

jab it aibo keenee tayaaree

As Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji started concluding Their visit from [Bengal],

ਪਸਰ੍ਯੋ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਜਹਾਂ ਕਹਿਂ ਭਾਰੀ ।

pasarayo sujas jahaan kahin bhaaree

Their fame widely spread in all directions.

ਦੇਸ਼ ਅਸਾਮ ਕੇਰ ਮਹਿਪਾਲਾ ।

desh asaam ker mahipaalaa

[And so, there was a] ruler in the land of Assam,

ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਹੁਇ ਕਿਸ ਕਾਲਾ ॥੩॥

jis ke putr na hue kis kaalaa ||3||

whose circumstances had not granted him a son. ||3||

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਕ੍ਯੋ ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਚਾਰ ।

kar kar thakayo anik upachaar

They've exhausted every conceivable remedy,

ਬੀਤ ਗਯੋ ਤਰੁਨਾਪਨ ਚਾਰੁ ।

beet gayo tarunaapan chaar

and with time, even their youthful vigor faded.

ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਗੁਰ ਜਸੁ ਮੁਦਤਿ ਬਿਲੰਦ ।

sun kai gur jas mudat biland

Upon hearing of the Guru's glory, he was overwhelmed with elation,

ਜਨ ਕੀ ਪੁਰਹਿਂ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ॥੪॥

jan kee purahin kaamanaa brind ||4||

[that] — the Guru fulfills the devotees' deepest desires. ||4||

ਅੰਤਹਿਪੁਰਿ ਕੋ ਲੇ ਨਿਜ ਸਾਥ ।

antahipur ko le nij saath

With the queen by his side,

ਮਿਲ੍ਯੋ ਆਇ ਜਹਿਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਥ ।

milayo aae jahin satigur naath

they came before the Satguru, the Sovereign Master.

ਅਨਿਕ ਅਕੋਰ ਅਰਪ ਕਰਿ ਧਰੇ ।

anik akor arap kar dhare

They presented numerous offerings,

ਦੋ ਕਰਿ ਜੋਰਿ ਨਿਹੋਰਨਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੫॥

do kar jor nihoran kare ||5||

and with joined palms, they implored humbly. ||5||

ਸੁਤਿ ਅਭਿਲਾਖਾ ਅਰਜ਼ ਗੁਜਾਰੀ ।

sut abhilaakhaa araz gujaaree

[The king and queen] earnestly conveyed their longing for a child.

ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਧਾਰੀ ।

sun kar satigur karunaa dhaaree

The Satguru, upon hearing this, extended His compassion.

ਹੁਤੀ ਹਾਥ ਮਹਿਂ ਅੱਛਰ ਛਾਪ ।

hutee haath mahin achhar chhaap

The Guru used to bear a stamp inscribed with sacred characters in His hand;

ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਉਰੂ ਪਰ ਲਾਈ ਆਪ ॥੬॥

nripat uroo par laaee aap ||6||

and so, He personally affixed the stamp upon the king’s thigh! ||6||

ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਬਾਕ ਬਰ ਕੋ ਤਬਿ ਤਿਸੈ ।

kehayo baak bar ko tab tisai

Then the Guru proclaimed a boon,

ਉਪਜੈ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਤੋਹਿ ਘਰ ਬਿਸੈ ।

aupajai putr tohi ghar bisai

“In your home, a son shall be born.

ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਮੁਹਰ ਹਮਾਰੀ ।

tis ke sir par muhar hamaaree

On his head, My seal will be present,

ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹੈ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹਤਿ ਸੋ ਬਯ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੭॥

hvai hai chinhat so bay saaree ||7||

A mark distinguished, for his entire life apparent.” ||7||

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਘਰ ਗਯੋ ।

gur te le kar nrip ghar gayo

Blessed by the Guru, the king returned to his abode,

ਇਕ ਸੰਮਤ ਮਹਿਂ ਸੁਤ ਉਪਜ੍ਯੋ ।

eik samat mahin sut upajayo

within a year, a son was bestowed.

ਅਨਿਕ ਅਨੰਦ ਬਜਾਇ ਵਧਾਈ ।

anik anand bajaae vadhaaee

Immense joy and celebrations arose,

ਬੰਟ੍ਯੋ ਦਰਬ ਨਰਨਿ ਸਮੁਦਾਈ ॥੮॥

banttayo darab naran samudaaee ||8||

generously, he dispersed wealth amongst everyone! ||8||

ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰ੍ਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਿਯ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਬਡੇਰਾ ।

pratipaarayo priy putr badderaa

He tenderly raised his beloved son,

ਕਰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਖਨ ਚਿਰ ਨਹਿਂ ਹੇਰਾ ।

karat prateekhan chir nahin heraa

watching him at every moment, never tiring of the sight.

ਕਰਹਿਂ ਦੁਲਾਰਨਿ ਹਰਖਤਿ ਹੋਏ ।

karahin dulaaran harakhat hoe

Engaging in affectionate play, they were filled with delight!

ਗੁਰ ਜਸ ਉਚਰਹਿਂ ਦੰਪਤਿ ਦੋਏ ॥੯॥

gur jas ucharahin danpat doe ||9||

Together, the king and queen [daily] meditated the Guru’s greatness! ||9||

ਸਪਤ ਬਰਖ ਕੋ ਬਾਲਿਕ ਭਯੋ ।

sapat barakh ko baalik bhayo

When the son reached the age of seven,

ਬੈਸ ਅੰਤ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਮਰਿ ਗਯੋ ।

bais ant te nrip mar gayo

the king breathed his last and departed from this world.

ਮਾਤ ਰਹੀ ਜੀਵਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਾ ।

maat rahee jeevat pratipaaraa

The queen, now alone, continued to nurture him with care,

ਤਬਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੁਤ ਨਿਜ ਸੁਰਤ ਸੰਭਾਰਾ ॥੧੦॥

tab nrip sut nij surat sanbhaaraa ||10||

until the young prince grew capable of self-awareness [and his own affairs]. ||10||

ਦ੍ਵਾਦਸ਼ ਸੰਮਤ ਕੋ ਜਬਿ ਹੋਵਾ ।

dvaadash samat ko jab hovaa

As twelve years come to pass,

ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਮੁਕਰ ਭਲੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੋਵਾ ।

eik din mukar bhalee bidh jovaa

one day, [the prince] beholds his reflection in the mirror.

ਕੰਘਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੁ ਕੇਸਨ ਮਾਂਹਿ ।

kanghaa kareh su kesan maanhi

He combs his kesh (uncut hair),

ਪੁਨ ਜੂਰੋ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਿਯ ਤਾਂਹਿ ॥੧੧॥

pun jooro bandhan kiy taanhi ||11||

and then secures it into a joora (topknot). ||11||

ਦੇਖਤਿ ਮੁਕਰ ਬਿਖੈ ਨਿਜ ਸਿਰ ਕੋ ।

dekhat mukar bikhai nij sir ko

Observing his own reflection, he gazes upon his head,

ਤਿਸ ਪਰ ਹੇਰ੍ਯੋ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਮੁਹਰ ਕੋ ।

tis par herayo chinh muhar ko

noticing there a distinctive birthmark, a stamp's speck.

ਅੰਗੁਰੀ ਸੰਗ ਕੇਸ ਕਉ ਟਾਰੈ ।

anguree sang kes kau ttaarai

With his fingers, he pulls back his kesh (hair),

ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਸੋ ਥਾਨ ਨਿਹਾਰੈ ॥੧੨॥

baar baar so thaan nihaarai ||12||

gazing repeatedly at that very spot. ||12||

ਨਹੀਂ ਕੇਸ ਜਾ ਮੇ ਕ੍ਯਾ ਹੇਤੁ ।

naheen kes jaa me kayaa het

[He thinks to himself]: “Why is there no hair [growth at this spot with the mark]? What could be the reason?

ਲਗੀ ਚੋਟ ਜਬਿ ਬੈਸ ਅਚੇਤ ।

lagee chott jab bais achet

Perhaps it's a scar from a wound received in a state of unconsciousness as a child...

ਕੈ ਬਿਸਫੋਟ ਨਿਕਸ੍ਯੋ ਹੋਇ ।

kai bisafott nikasayo hoe

...or maybe a boil had burst forth here [in my younger years].”

ਇਮ ਸੰਸੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਨੰਦਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੩॥

eim sansai nrip nandan koe ||13||

Such were the prince's concerns. ||13||

ਪਗਿਯਾ ਬੰਧਤਿ ਕਰਤਿ ਬਿਚਾਰਨ ।

pagiyaa bandhat karat bichaaran

Tying his turban, he ponders deeply,

ਜਨਨੀ ਜਾਨਤਿ ਹੁਇ ਇਸ ਕਾਰਨ ।

jananee jaanat hue is kaaran

“My mother will know the reason for this [mark on my head]”

ਇਮ ਮਨ ਠਾਨਿ ਪਯਾਨੋ ਕੀਨਿ ।

eim man tthaan payaano keen

With that thought settled in his mind, he set off

ਜਿਹ ਠਾਂ ਅੰਤਹਿਪੁਰਿ ਆਸੀਨ ॥੧੪॥

jih tthaan antahipur aaseen ||14||

to the quarters where the queen is seated. ||14||

ਨਿਕਟ ਬੈਠਿ ਕਰਿ ਬੂਝੀ ਤਹਾਂ ।

nikatt baitth kar boojhee tahaan

Seated close by, he begins to inquire,

ਸਿਰ ਮੈਂ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਹੇਤੁ ਇਸ ਕਹਾਂ ।

sir main chinh het is kahaan

“This mark upon my head; from where does it come?

ਲਗੀ ਚੋਟ ਕੈ ਭਾ ਬਿਸਫੋਟ ।

lagee chott kai bhaa bisafott

Is it a scar from a wound or some sort of boil?

ਕੇਸ ਨ ਜਾਮੇ ਕੌਨੇ ਖੋਟ ॥੧੫॥

kes na jaame kauane khott ||15||

Why does no hair grow on this spot; what is the fault?” ||15||

ਸੁਨਿ ਰਾਨੀ ਸਭਿ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੰਤ ।

sun raanee sabh kehayo britant

The queen, upon hearing [his questions], narrates the entire tale,

ਇਤ ਆਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਗਵੰਤ ।

eit aae satigur bhagavant

“The Bhagvantā (Divinely) Satguru arrived here [in the city].

ਤੋਰ ਪਿਤਾ ਗਮਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਸ ।

tor pitaa gamanayon tin paas

Your father went to his presence,

ਸੁਤ ਬਾਂਛਤ ਕੀਨਸਿ ਅਰਦਾਸ ॥੧੬॥

sut baanchhat keenas aradaas ||16||

with an undying wish, praying for a son! ||16||

ਸੁਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਹਰ ਹਾਥ ਤੇ ਲਾਈ ।

sun gur muhar haath te laaee

Upon hearing the plea, Guru Tegh Bahadur applied a stamp from his hand,

ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹਤਿ ਸੁਤ ਹੁਇ ਸਿਰ ਉਪਜਾਈ ।

chinhat sut hue sir upajaaee

[declaring], ‘a son will be born with this sign on his head!’

ਮਹਿਪਾਲਕ ਤਨ ਲਾਗੀ ਜੋਈ ।

mahipaalak tan laagee joee

What was imprinted on the king’s body...

ਤੋਹਿ ਸੀਸ ਪਰ ਜਾਨਹੁਂ ਸੋਈ ॥੧੭॥

tohi sees par jaanahun soee ||17||

...recognize that as the very mark on your head. ||17||

ਤੂੰ ਜਨਮ੍ਯੋਂ ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਮਹਾਨਾ ।

toon janamayon gur sikh mahaanaa

You were born an elite Gursikh,

ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਮੁਹਰ ਲਗੇ ਤੇ ਜਾਨਾ ।

sir par muhar lage te jaanaa

Bearing the stamp on your head as a sign to recognize.”

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੁਤਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਮਨ ਬਿਸਮਾਯੋ ।

nrip sut sun kai man bisamaayo

Hearing this, the prince was astounded,

ਇਹ ਤੌ ਅਦਭੁਤ ਹੇਤੁ ਬਤਾਯੋ ॥੧੮॥

eih tau adabhut het bataayo ||18||

“Such an astonishing reason has been revealed. ||18||

ਹੇ ਜਨਨੀ ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਹਾਂ ।

he jananee so satigur kahaan

Oh mother! Where is that True Guru now?

ਜਿਨ ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਪਈਯਤਿ ਮਹਾਂ ।

jin main shakatee peeyat mahaan

Who possesses such immense power?

ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਿਬੇ ਮਨ ਉਮਗਾਯੋ ।

darashan karibe man umagaayo

My heart longs for the vision of their darshan (divine glimpse),

ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਬਰ ਤੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਨਿਪਜਾਯੋ ॥੧੯॥

jin ke bar te muhi nipajaayo ||19||

through whose blessing I was brought into being.” ||19||

ਰਾਨੀ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਸੁ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਗਏ ।

raanee kehayo su baikuntth ge

The queen said, “They have [ascended] to Vaikuntha (the eternal abode).

ਗਾਦੀ ਪਰ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਸੁਤ ਭਏ ।

gaadee par tin ke sut bhe

Now, it is their Son who sits upon the throne.

ਜਨਮੇ ਪਟਣੇ ਨਗਰ ਮਝਾਰੀ ।

janame pattane nagar majhaaree

He was born in the heart of Patna city,

ਬਡੇ ਹੋਇ ਜਬਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੰਭਾਰੀ ॥੨੦॥

badde hoe jab surat sanbhaaree ||20||

And when He came of age and maturity... ||20||

ਦੇਸ਼ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਹੁਤੋ ਤਿਨ ਕੇਰਾ ।

desh panjaab huto tin keraa

He went to the land of Punjab,

ਤਿਸ ਥਲ ਜਾਇ ਟਿਕੇ ਤਿਸ ਬੇਰਾ ।

tis thal jaae ttike tis beraa

to that place, He traveled and settled.

ਅਪਨਿ ਦੇਸ਼ ਤੇ ਦੂਰ ਬਡੇਰੇ ।

apan desh te door baddere

That place is quite far from our own land.

ਦਿਖਿਯਤਿ ਗਮਨੇ ਪੰਤ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥੨੧॥

dikhiyat gamane pant ghanere ||21||

The journey appears long and arduous!” ||21||

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੁਤ ਸੁਨਤਿ ਰਿਦੇ ਆਨੰਦ ।

nrip sut sunat ride aanand

Upon hearing this, the prince's heart swells with bliss!

ਜਗੀ ਦੇਖਿਬੇ ਚਾਹਿ ਬਿਲੰਦ ।

jagee dekhibe chaeh biland

A burning desire to see [the Guru] awakens within.

ਤਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਯਾਰੀ ਕਰਿਵਾਵਤਿ ।

tis din te tayaaree karivaavat

From that day forward, he begins his preparations,

ਵਸਤੁ ਅਜਾਇਬ ਕੋ ਖੁਜਵਾਵਤਿ ॥੨੨॥

vasat ajaaeib ko khujavaavat ||22||

seeking out wondrous and rare items [to present to the esteemed Guru]. ||22||

ਮਸਲਤ ਕਰਤਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਅਨਿ ਸੰਗ ।

masalat karat mantreean sang

Consulting with his ministers,

ਹਿਤ ਅਕੋਰ ਲੇ ਕਿਤਿਕ ਤੁਰੰਗ ।

hit akor le kitik turang

[they] gathered many fine horses as presents,

ਚਪਲ ਬਲੀ ਜਿਨ ਬੇਗ ਬਿਸਾਲੇ ।

chapal balee jin beg bisaale

[These fine horses were] nimble and strong, capable of swift gallops,

ਜ਼ਰੀ ਜ਼ੀਨ ਕੰਚਨ ਕੇ ਡਾਲੇ ॥੨੩॥

zaree zeen kanchan ke ddaale ||23||

adorned with saddles and fabrics embroidered with gold. ||23||

ਅਦਭੁਤ ਲੀਨਸਿ ਏਕ ਮਤੰਗ ।

adabhut leenas ek matang

They also got one rare elephant,

ਕਦ ਛੋਟੋ ਨਹਿਂ ਦੀਰਘ ਅੰਗ ।

kad chhotto nahin deeragh ang

that was short in stature, and unwide in build,

ਜਿਤੋ ਰੋਟਕਾ ਕੇਰ ਅਕਾਰ ।

jito rottakaa ker akaar

resembling the round shape of a [nice, well-made] roti,

ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੁਤੋ ਸੁਪੈਦ ਲਿਲਾਰ ॥੨੪॥

sundar huto supaid lilaar ||24||

possessing a beautiful, pale forehead! ||24||

ਤਿਸੀ ਸੁਪੈਦੀ ਕੀ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਧਾਰੀ ।

tisee supaidee kee shubh dhaaree

That fair elephant had an auspicious streak,

ਉਤਰੀ ਤਰੀ ਸੁੰਡ ਲਗਿ ਸਾਰੀ ।

autaree taree sundd lag saaree

which descended down its entire trunk,

ਸਿਰ ਪਰਿ ਹੁਇ ਕਰਿ ਗਈ ਪਿਛਾਰੇ ।

sir par hue kar gee pichhaare

from the head all the way to the back,

ਲਾਂਗੁਲ ਮੂਲ ਤੀਕ ਇਕ ਸਾਰੇ ॥੨੫॥

laangul mool teek ik saare ||25||

uniformly reaching till the very start of the tail. ||25||

ਅਪਰ ਅਕਾਰ ਸੁ ਕਾਰਾ ਸਾਰੋ ।

apar akaar su kaaraa saaro

[But] the rest of its body is entirely black,

ਸਕਲ ਅੰਗ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਦੁਤਿ ਵਾਰੋ ।

sakal ang sundar dut vaaro

each limb is beautifully radiant,

ਪੁਨ ਸੀਖ੍ਯਾ ਦੇ ਭਲੇ ਸਿਖਾਯੋ ।

pun seekhayaa de bhale sikhaayo

Furthermore, it has been well-trained,

ਕਰਹਿ ਸੁ ਨਰ ਜਿਮ ਚਹੈ ਕਰਾਯੋ ॥੨੬॥

kareh su nar jim chahai karaayo ||26||

and performs tasks as directed by the mahouts. ||26||

ਸੁੰਡ ਬਿਖੈ ਗਹਿ ਲੇਤਿ ਮਸਾਲ ।

sundd bikhai geh let masaal

It can grasp a torch with its trunk

ਠਾਢੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਬਿਸਾਲ ।

tthaadte kareh prakaash bisaal

[so when] standing, it can cast a vast illumination!

ਕਰਤਿ ਰਹਤਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਚੌਰ ।

karat rehat nrip ke sir chauar

It can also perform the service of waving a ਚੌਰ (whisk) over the king's head.

ਚਿਰ ਲੌ ਖਰੋ ਪਾਛਲੀ ਠੌਰ ॥੨੭॥

chir lau kharo paachhalee tthauar ||27||

The elephant can also maintain a stance on its hind legs for a prolonged period. ||27||

ਜੇਤਿਕ ਤੀਰ ਚਲਾਵਨਿ ਕਰੈਂ ।

jetik teer chalaavan karain

Wherever arrows are shot,

ਬੀਨ ਬੀਨ ਤਿਨ ਆਗੇ ਧਰੈ ।

been been tin aage dharai

[the elephant] meticulously picks up each one and sets them forth.

ਇੱਤ੍ਯਾਦਿਕ ਗੁਨ ਜਿਸ ਮੈਂ ਘਨੇ ।

eitayaadik gun jis main ghane

Endowed with such plentiful qualities,

ਜਬਹਿ ਆਇ ਕਰਿ ਤਿਸ ਢਿਗ ਭਨੇ ॥੨੮॥

jabeh aae kar tis dtig bhane ||28||

[the minister] approached and relayed this information. ||28||

ਅਸ ਅਦਭੁਤ ਸੁਨਿ ਮਹਿਪਤ ਨੰਦ ।

as adabhut sun mahipat nand

Upon hearing such wonders, the prince was amazed!

ਮੁਖ ਮਾਂਗ੍ਯੋ ਧਨ ਪਠ੍ਯੋ ਬਿਲੰਦ ।

mukh maangayo dhan patthayo biland

He sent a vast sum of money to acquire it.

ਗੁਰ ਹਿਤ ਹਰਖਤਿ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨੋ ।

gur hit harakhat hvai kar leeno

With the intention of pleasing the Guru, he procured the elephant,

ਸਿਤਾ ਘ੍ਰਿਤਾਦਿ ਖਾਨ ਕੌ ਦੀਨੋ ॥੨੯॥

sitaa ghritaad khaan kau deeno ||29||

[and prepared] offerings of sugar, ghee, and various delicacies. ||29||

ਦੂਰ ਦੇਸ਼ ਤੇ ਏ ਮੰਗਵਾਇਵ ।

door desh te e mangavaaeiv

He had these [gifts] brought from distant lands,

ਚਾਹਿਤਿ ਚਿਤ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਰਿਝਾਇਵ ।

chaahit chit satiguroo rijhaaeiv

with a heartfelt wish to delight the True Guru.

ਪੰਚਕਲਾ ਇਕ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਜਾਇਬ ।

panchakalaa ik shasatr ajaaeib

A remarkable five-action weapon [known as] Panchkāl was among them.

ਤ੍ਯਾਰ ਕਰਾਯਹੁ ਅਰਪਨਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ ॥੩੦॥

tayaar karaayahu arapan saahib ||30||

Carefully crafted to be presented to the Master. ||30||

ਰਹੇ ਗਾਤਰੇ ਬਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ।

rahe gaatare banayon kripaan

[A freshly forged] kirpan, ready to be strapped.

ਤੀਖਨ ਧਾਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਰਿਪੁਹਾਨਿ ।

teekhan dhaar kareh ripuhaan

Its keen edge designed to vanquish foes.

ਕਲ ਦਾਬੇ ਬਰਛੀ ਹੁਇ ਜਾਇ ।

kal daabe barachhee hue jaae

With a mechanism to extend into a spear at the press of a button,

ਸਨਮੁਖ ਅਰਿ ਕੇ ਹਤਹਿ ਬਗਾਇ ॥੩੧॥

sanamukh ar ke hateh bagaae ||31||

and thrown in face-to-face combat. ||31||

ਪੁਨ ਕਲ ਦਾਬੇ ਬਨਹਿ ਤਮਾਂਚਾ ।

pun kal daabe baneh tamaanchaa

Then, by pressing [another] button, it transforms into a pistol,

ਗੁਲਕਾ ਡਾਰਿ ਹਤਹਿ ਰਣ ਮਾਚਾ ।

gulakaa ddaar hateh ran maachaa

capable of discharging bullets to strike down foes in the thick of battle.

ਤੀਖਨ ਪੁਨ ਕਟਾਰ ਬਨ ਜਾਇ ।

teekhan pun kattaar ban jaae

Again, it can [also] transform into a katar (a punch dagger),

ਰਿਪੁ ਢਿਗ ਪਹੁਂਚੇ ਉਦਰ ਧਸਾਇ ॥੩੨॥

rip dtig pahunche udar dhasaae ||32||

designed to pierce through the adversary's body upon close encounter. ||32||

ਪੁਨ ਇਕ ਚੌਕੀ ਲਈ ਅਜਾਇਬ ।

pun ik chauakee lee ajaaeib

[In addition to the Panchkāl, he also] commissioned a remarkable throne

ਕਰਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ।

karan prasan satiguroo saahib

with the intent to delight Satguru Sahib.

ਜਬਿ ਇਸ ਕੀ ਕਲ ਦਾਬਨਿ ਕਰੈਂ ।

jab is kee kal daaban karain

Upon activating a mechanism [on this extraordinary seat],

ਪੁਤਲੀ ਚਾਰ ਨਿਕਸਿ ਤਹਿਂ ਥਿਰੈਂ ॥੩੩॥

putalee chaar nikas tahin thirain ||33||

four ਪੁਤਲੀ-s (figurines or dolls) would emerge and stand at attention. ||33||

ਚੌਪਰ ਕੋ ਬਿਛਾਇ ਤਿਨ ਆਗੈ ।

chauapar ko bichhaae tin aagai

[The figures] would lay out a board for playing Chaupar in front of them,

ਡਲ ਕੋ ਗਹਿ ਸੋ ਖੇਲਨਿ ਲਾਗੈਂ ।

ddal ko geh so khelan laagain

seizing the dice, [they] would play the game.

ਪੁਨ ਲੀਨਸਿ ਇਕ ਜਾਮ ਕਟੋਰਾ ।

pun leenas ik jaam kattoraa

Additionally, a captivating goblet was acquired.

ਇਨ ਹਿਤ ਦਰਬ ਦਿਯੋ ਨਹਿਂ ਥੋਰਾ ॥੩੪॥

ein hit darab diyo nahin thoraa ||34||

[The king] did not spare any expense for these beloved acquisitions! ||34||

ਇੱਤ੍ਯਾਦਿਕ ਵਸਤੂ ਸਮੁਦਾਏ ।

eitayaadik vasatoo samudaae

In this way, a variety of items were amassed.

ਰੁਚਿਰ ਬਿਭੂਖਨ ਖਚਤਿ ਘਰਾਏ ।

ruchir bibhookhan khachat gharaae

Pleasing and precious ornaments were procured in abundance.

ਬਹੁ ਅੰਬਰ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੇ ਲੀਨਿ ।

bahu anbar bahu bidh ke leen

Numerous types of fine clothing were also acquired.

ਚਲਿਬੇ ਹਿਤ ਤ੍ਯਾਰੀ ਨਿਜ ਕੀਨਿ ॥੩੫॥

chalibe hit tayaaree nij keen ||35||

All preparations were made for the impending journey. ||35||
