ਭਯੋ ਜੁੱਧ ਅਤਿਸ਼ੈ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਨਾਦਤਿ ਤੁਪਕ ਕਮਾਨ ।

bhayo judh atishai prabal naadat tupak kamaan

A very mighty war ensued; bows and guns created immense commotion.

ਸ਼ੂੰਕਤ ਸਰਪ ਸਮਾਨ ਸਰ ਗੁਲਕਾਂ ਲਗਿ ਭਟ ਹਾਨ ॥੧॥

shoonkat sarap samaan sar gulakaan lag bhatt haan ||1||

Arrows are hissing like snakes and bullets are rapidly hitting warriors, killing them. ||1||

ਕਹਾਂ ਬੀਰ ਚਾਲੀ ਛੁਧਾਵਿੰਤ ਭਾਰੇ ।

kahaan beer chaalee chhudhaavint bhaare

On one side there are forty famished warriors,

ਕਹਾਂ ਏਕ ਨੌ ਲਾਖ ਆਏ ਹਕਾਰੇ ।

kahaan ek nau laakh aae hakaare

and on the other there is an army of thousands.

ਅਭੂਤੰ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੰਤੰ ਸੁਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਦੇਵ ਜਾਲਾ ।

abhootan britantan sunayon dev jaalaa

The deities were astonished upon seeing this occurence;

ਮਿਲੇ ਏਕ ਥਾਨੰ ਅਚੰਭੈ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ ॥੨॥

mile ek thaanan achanbhai bisaalaa ||2||

one which had never occured before. ||2||

ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਏਵ ਕੈਸੇ ਲਰੰਤੇ ।

kalee kaal main ev kaise larante

"How are they fighting like this in the age of Kali Yuga?

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਰਾਮਾਤ ਨਾ ਸੂਚਿਯੰਤੇ ।

guroo jee karaamaat naa soochiyante

They are proving the miraculous feats of the Guru."

ਅਸੰਭੈ ਮਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਅਚੰਭੈ ਬਿਲੰਦੇ ।

asanbhai mahaan te achanbhai bilande

Remaining astonished upon hearing of this occurence,

ਬਿਲੋਕੈਂ ਚਲੈਂ ਚਾਉਂ ਚੀਤੰ ਉਠੰਦੇ ॥੩॥

bilokain chalain chaaun cheetan utthande ||3||

ਅਰੂਢੇ ਬਿਮਾਨੰ ਪਯਾਨੰਤਿ ਆਏ ।

aroodte bimaanan payaanant aae

They arrived within their Vimanas,

ਜਹਾਂ ਗੈਨ ਕੋ ਖੇਹ ਤੇ ਸੈਨ ਛਾਏ ।

jahaan gain ko kheh te sain chhaae

where due to the dust sprawled by the enemies, the sky was completely covered.

ਅਟਾਰੀ ਬਿਖੈ ਨਾਥ ਕੋ ਦੇਖਿ ਬੰਦੇ ।

attaaree bikhai naath ko dekh bande

Seeing Guru Ji seated within the loft, they paid obeisance to them.

ਲਰਾਈ ਬਿਲੋਕੈਂ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਦੀਹ ਦੁੰਦੇ ॥੪॥

laraaee bilokain parayo deeh dunde ||4||

Then they went to see the tremendous battle take place. ||4||

ਤੁਫੰਗੈਂ ਤੜਾਕੇ ਸੜਾਕੈਂ ਕੜਾਕੈਂ ।

tufangain tarraake sarraakain karraakain

Creating great commotion, guns are firing bullets which fly in the air and hit the enemies.

ਝੜਾ ਝਾੜ ਤੇਗੇ ਝੜਾਕੈਂ ਮੜਾਕੈਂ ।

jharraa jhaarr tege jharraakain marraakain

All over the place, Teghas are clashing with each other.

ਹਲਾ ਹਾਲ ਹੂਲੰ ਹਲੈਂ ਹੇਲ ਲੋਹੇ ।

halaa haal hoolan halain hel lohe

There is great uproar as the enemies call attack, and the attacks are happening with weapons.

ਲਗੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਣ ਲਾਲੰ ਢੁਕੇ ਢਾਕ ਸੋਹੇ ॥੫॥

lage shron laalan dtuke dtaak sohe ||5||

The red blood on the ground appears as if it is a Butea frondosa tree which has bloomed flowers. ||5||

ਘਨੇ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬੰ ਸਿੱਧ ਆਏ ਅਕਾਸ਼ਾ ।

ghane gandhraban sidh aae akaashaa

Lots of Gandharvas and Sidhhas appear in the sky,

ਥਿਰੇ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਭੂਰ ਹੋਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਾ ।

thire devataa bhoor hoyo prakaashaa

some dieties also arrive which causes great radiance in the sky.

ਉਡੈਂ ਗ੍ਰਿੱਧ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਧੰ ਵਧ੍ਯੋ ਜੁੱਧ ਉੱਧੰ ।

auddain gradh bradhan vadhayo judh udhan

Many vultures are flying in the sky and a very fearsome battle was taking place.

ਭਿੜੇ ਭੇੜ ਜੋਧਾ ਰਿਦੇ ਮੱਧ ਸੁੱਧੰ ॥੬॥

bhirre bherr jodhaa ride madh sudhan ||6||

The warriors are all clashing with each other and there is awareness in their minds. ||6||

ਬਡੇ ਕਾਂਕ ਕੰਕੰ ਕਈ ਕੂਕ ਕੂਕੈਂ ।

badde kaank kankan kee kook kookain

Huge crows are crowing, some are shrieking very loudly.

ਭਖੈਂ ਮਾਸ ਸੂਰਾਨਿ ਕੇ ਤੀਰ ਢੂਕੈਂ ।

bhakhain maas sooraan ke teer dtookain

Some are coming near and feasting on the flesh of the warriors.

ਬਹ੍ਯੋ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਣ ਚਾਲਾ ਧਰਾ ਲਾਲ ਹੋਈ ।

behayo shron chaalaa dharaa laal hoee

Blood was flowing everywhere and the ground was coloured red.

ਕਸੁੰਭੀ ਮਨੋ ਚੂਨਰੀ ਲੀਨਿ ਜੋਈ ॥੭॥

kasunbhee mano choonaree leen joee ||7||

Consider that the ground was wearing a red coloured scarf. ||7||

ਦਯਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਦੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸ ਜੈ ਕੈ ।

dayaa singh aadan guroo paas jai kai

Daya Singh and others approach the Guru,

ਕਰੰ ਜੋਰਿ ਦੋਨੋਂ ਬਿਨੈ ਭਾਖਿ ਕੈ ਕੈ ।

karan jor donon binai bhaakh kai kai

folding their hands and supplicate,

ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਛੋਰੋ ਲਰਾਈ ਅਖਾਰਾ ।

mahaaraaj chhoro laraaee akhaaraa

"O Maharaj, please leave this battlefield,

ਪਿਆਨੋ ਕਹੂੰ ਕੋ ਕਰੀਜੈ ਕਿਨਾਰਾ ॥੮॥

piaano kahoon ko kareejai kinaaraa ||8||

and go some place else. ||8||

ਸਭੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੂਝੇ ਹਤੇ ਸ਼ੱਤ੍ਰੁ ਭਾਰੇ ।

sabhai singh joojhe hate shatru bhaare

All the Singhs have attained Martyrdom.

ਮਰੇ ਜੁੱਧ ਬੀਚੰ ਰਿਦੈ ਧੀਰ ਧਾਰੇ ।

mare judh beechan ridai dheer dhaare

Upon killing many enemies, they have died within the battlefield.

ਬਚੈ ਆਪ ਕੋ ਦੇਹਿ ਚਾਹੈਂ ਜੁਝਾਰੇ ।

bachai aap ko dehi chaahain jujhaare

All the warriors want your body to survive.

ਤਜੋ ਜੰਗ ਕੋ ਢੰਗ ਹੂਜੇ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ॥੯॥

tajo jang ko dtang hooje kinaare ||9||

Please avoid the battle and leave this location." ||9||

ਘਨੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੈਯ ਸਿੰਘਨਿ ਕੇਰੀ ।

ghanee benatee shraiy singhan keree

Guru Ji, upon hearing the Singhs' supplication,

ਹਸੇ ਦੀਨ ਦ੍ਯਾਲੰ ਭਨ੍ਯੋ ਤਾਂਹਿ ਬੇਰੀ ।

hase deen dayaalan bhanayo taanhi beree

smiled and told the Singhs,

ਪਿਖੋ ਖੱਗ ਕੇਤੰ ਬਿਲਾਸੰ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ।

pikho khag ketan bilaasan tamaashaa

"Look at the clashing of their swords;

ਕਰੋ ਬੇਗ ਤੇ ਬੇਇਮਾਨੈ ਬਿਨਾਸ਼ਾ ॥੧੦॥

karo beg te beeimaanai binaashaa ||10||

go and finish off the treacherous enemies." ||10||

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਸੇ ਤਜਿ ਪੌਰ ਕੋ ਠੌਰਹਿ ਦੌਰਿ ਅਗਾਰੀ ।

shree mukh te sun kai nikase taj pauar ko tthauareh dauar agaaree

Hearing this from the Guru's mouth, many Singhs exited the fort and ran into battle.

ਮੋਹਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੁ ਕੀਰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਨੰਦ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਿੰਦ ਚਲ੍ਯੋ ਬਲਿ ਭਾਰੀ ।

mohar singh su keerat singh anand mrigind chalayo bal bhaaree

Mohar Singh, Kirat Singh, Anand Singh and others went embodying great strength.

ਲਾਲ ਜੁ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੁ ਕੇਸਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਲਹੇ ਫਲ ਚਾਰੀ ।

laal ju singh su kesaraa singh amolak singh lahe fal chaaree

Lal Singh, Kesara Singh and Amolak Singh all went to reap the fruits of their labour.

ਨਾ ਅਸ ਔਸਰ ਹਾਥ ਪਰੈ ਪੁਨ ਜੇ ਹੁਇ ਸੰਮਤ ਬੈਸ ਹਜ਼ਾਰੀ ॥੧੧॥

naa as aauasar haath parai pun je hue samat bais hazaaree ||11||

They think to themselves that even if they live for thousands of years, they will not find an oppurtunity better than this. ||11||

ਹੇਲ ਕੋ ਮੇਲਤਿ ਨੇਰ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਰਿਪੁ ਪੌਰ ਕੇ ਠੌਰ ਕੋ ਜੇ ਗਨ ਆਏ ।

hel ko melat ner karayo rip pauar ke tthauar ko je gan aae

Those Singhs which had arrived at the location of the fort entrance; they called attack upon the enemies.

ਕਾਢਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਪਰੇ ਤਬਿ ਸਿੰਘ ਤਛਾਮੁਛਿ ਕੈ ਪੁਨ ਦੂਰ ਹਟਾਏ ।

kaadt kripaan pare tab singh tachhaamuchh kai pun door hattaae

Unsheathing their swords they charged at the enemies; cutting them up they pushed them way back.

ਫਾਂਧਤਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਹੂਂਚਿ ਕੈ ਬਾਹਰ ਬੀਰ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੋ ਦੇਤਿ ਗਿਰਾਏ ।

faandhat jaat pahoonch kai baahar beer sareer ko det giraae

Arriving outside they pounce around and throw enemies upon the ground upon killing them.

ਹੋਤਿ ਖਰੋ ਅਰਿ ਜੋ ਅਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਹਿਂ ਜੀਵਤਿ ਮਾਤ ਮਨੋਂ ਨਹਿਂ ਜਾਏ ॥੧੨॥

hot kharo ar jo ar kai nahin jeevat maat manon nahin jaae ||12||

Any enemies that were standing in fixed positions outside the fort were finished off as if they were never born. ||12||

ਕ੍ਯਾ ਬਰਨੋਂ ਰਣ ਕੋ ਤਿਨ ਸਿੰਘਨਿ ਸਿੰਘਨਿ ਜ੍ਯੋਂ ਭਭਕਾਰ ਪਰੇ ।

kayaa baranon ran ko tin singhan singhan jayon bhabhakaar pare

What more shall I [Kavi Santokh Singh] say about the Singhs; they charged against the enemy like thunder.

ਸੈਂਕਰ ਸ਼ੱਤ੍ਰੁਨਿ ਕੋ ਤਨ ਗਾਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਚਹੁੰ ਓਰਤੇ ਬੀਚ ਘਿਰੇ ।

sainkar shatrun ko tan gaar mile chahun orate beech ghire

When hundreds more enemies had died, then the enemies joined together in all four corners. Amidst them, the Singhs becamed surrounded.

ਏਕਨ ਕੋ ਝਝਕੈਂ ਉਝਕੈਂ ਅਰੁ ਏਕਨ ਕੇ ਹਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹਰੇ ।

ekan ko jhajhakain ujhakain ar ekan ke hat praan hare

The Singhs shake some enemies and throw them to the ground; while some enemies are killed off by them.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਨਿਜ ਓਜ ਲਖਾਇ ਲਗੇ ਬਹੁ ਘਾਇ ਸੁ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਣ ਝਰੇ ॥੧੩॥

shree gur ko nij oj lakhaae lage bahu ghaae su shron jhare ||13||

They begin show the Guru their strength; they were heavily wounded and blood flowed like rivers. ||13||

ਸੇਲਨਿ ਸਾਂਗਨਿ ਤੋਮਰ ਤੀਰਨਿ ਬੇਧਿ ਲਿਏ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ਗਿਰੇ ।

selan saangan tomar teeran bedh lie ik baar gire

Using spears, lances, pikes and arrows they stab and throw the enemies at once.

ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਕੌ ਤ੍ਯਾਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਤੇ ਜਾਗਤਿ ਬੀਰਤਾ ਪਾਗਤਿ ਰੰਗ ਖਰੇ ।

praan kau tayaagat prem te jaagat beerataa paagat rang khare

Then they left their bodies, awakening in love, their bravery had been consumed.

ਮਾਰਨ ਚਾਹਤਿ ਸ਼ੱਤ੍ਰੁਨਿ ਗਾਹਤਿ ਜੁੱਧ ਉਮਾਹਤਿ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਰੇ ।

maaran chaahat shatrun gaahat judh umaahat singh mare

They wished to continue killing enemies; with eagerness, the Singhs waged war and attained martyrdom.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਛੋਰਤਿ ਤੀਰ ਤਰਾ ਤਰ ਜੋ ਤਰ ਆਵਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹਰੇ ॥੧੪॥

shree gur chhorat teer taraa tar jo tar aavat praan hare ||14||

Satguru Ji were firing arrows from within the fort. Whoever gets shot with these arrows loses his life instantly. ||14||

ਨਾਹਰ ਖਾਨ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਰਣ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਸਿੰਘਨਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਹੋਯੋ ਅਗਾਰੀ ।

naahar khaan karayo ran zaahar singhan maar kai hoyo agaaree

Nahar Khan fought war in an apparent form and proceeded forwards upon killing Singhs.

ਪਾਇਨ ਕੀ ਕਰਿ ਚੰਚਲਤਾ ਚਹਿ ਕੋਟ ਕੀ ਭੀਤ ਕੇ ਜਾਉਂ ਮਝਾਰੀ ।

paaein kee kar chanchalataa cheh kott kee bheet ke jaaun majhaaree

Embodying briskness in his feet, he wished to step inside the fort;

ਆਪਨੀ ਭੂਰ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ ਕੋ ਦਿਖਰਾਵਤਿ ਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਕੌਤਕ ਭਾਰੀ ।

aapanee bhoor bahaadaree ko dikharaavat hai kar kauatak bhaaree

he flaunted his bravery and performed many spectacles.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਤਬਿ ਡੀਠ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਤੂਰਨਤਾ ਖਰ ਤੀਰ ਸੰਚਾਰੀ ॥੧੫॥

shree gur kee tab ddeetth parayo kar tooranataa khar teer sanchaaree ||15||

Satguru Ji directed their eyesight towards him and immediately placed a sharp arrow in their bowstring. ||15||

ਮ੍ਯਾਨ ਬਿਹੀਨ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਨਚਾਵਤਿ ਦੂਸਰ ਪਾਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਢਾਲ ਸੰਭਾਰੇ ।

mayaan biheen kripaan nachaavat doosar paan mahin dtaal sanbhaare

Nahar Khan swung around his unsheathed sword and held a shield in his other hand.

ਦੌਰਤਿ ਏਕ ਦਿਵਾਰ ਤਜੀ ਗਢਹੂੰ ਕੀ ਦਿਵਾਰ ਕੋ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ।

dauarat ek divaar tajee gadtahoon kee divaar ko jaat nihaare

Running rapidly, he headed towards the main entrance of the fort.

ਕਾਨ ਲੌ ਤਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਬਾਨ ਤਜ੍ਯੋ ਸੁ ਅਚਾਨਕ ਜਾਇ ਲਗ੍ਯੋ ਹੁਇ ਪਾਰੇ ।

kaan lau taan kai baan tajayo su achaanak jaae lagayo hue paare

Guru Ji pulled the bowstring up to their ears and shot the arrow;

ਜ੍ਯੋਂ ਉਡਿ ਕੈ ਬਡ ਸਰਪ ਗਯੋ ਬਰਮੀ ਬਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਹਿਂ ਅੰਗ ਦਿਖਾਰੇ ॥੧੬॥

jayon udd kai badd sarap gayo baramee bar kai nahin ang dikhaare ||16||

Immediately it went and struck Nahar Khan who fell elsewhere. ||16||

ਤੀਛਨ ਭੀਛਨ ਛੋਰ੍ਯੋ ਨਿਰੀਛਤਿ ਛਾਲ ਉਛਾਲਤਿ ਕੀ ਲਗਿ ਛਾਤੀ ।

teechhan bheechhan chhorayo nireechhat chhaal uchhaalat kee lag chhaatee

Guru Sahib had fired a sharp, fearsome arrow which hit Nahar Khan in his chest.

ਪਾਇ ਪਸਾਰ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਤਬਿਹੂੰ ਕਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਰਹਿਗੀ ਕਰਵਾਰ ਕੰਪਾਤੀ ।

paae pasaar parayo tabihoon kar mahin rahigee karavaar kanpaatee

Sprawling his legs he fell down upon the ground and his sword slipped out of his hand.

ਪਾਰ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਸਰ ਸ਼ੂੰਕ ਗਡ੍ਯੋ ਧਰ ਯੌਂ ਉਥਲ੍ਯੋ ਉਪਮਾ ਉਪਜਾਤੀ ।

paar parayo sar shoonk gaddayo dhar yauan uthalayo upamaa upajaatee

The arrow pierced right through his chest and flew straight into the ground beneath him.

ਬਾਯੁ ਸੁ ਬੇਗ ਬਿਸਾਲ ਬਹ੍ਯੋ ਤਰੁ ਤੇ ਛਿੰਨ ਮੂਲ ਧਰਾ ਪੈ ਪਪਾਤੀ ॥੧੭॥

baay su beg bisaal behayo tar te chhin mool dharaa pai papaatee ||17||

Nahar Khan fell to the ground as if heavy wind had uprooted a tree and caused it to fall to the ground. ||17||

ਮੁਗਲੇ ਜੁ ਪਠਾਨ ਬਿਲੋਕਤਿ ਥੇ ਭਯ ਪਾਇ ਮਹਾਂ ਦਬਕੇ ਪਿਛਵਾਈ ।

mugale ju patthaan bilokat the bhay paae mahaan dabake pichhavaaee

The Mughals and Pathans who were watching, embodied great fear and stepped backwards.

ਮਰਦੂਦਹਿ ਖ੍ਵਾਜ ਦਿਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਯੋ ਮਹਿਂ ਬੈਠਿ ਰਹ੍ਯੋ ਤਨ ਨਾ ਉਕਸਾਈ ।

maradoodeh khvaaj divaar ke saayo mahin baitth rehayo tan naa ukasaaee

Khwaja Mardood sat seeking the refuge of a nearby wall, without moving his body.

ਭਟ ਔਰ ਭਿ ਹੋਰਿ ਹਿਰਾਨ ਭਏ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਮਹਾਨ ਹਨ੍ਯੋ ਸਰ ਆਈ ।

bhatt aauar bhi hor hiraan bhe saradaar mahaan hanayo sar aaee

Other warriors also remained astonished that a single arrow had killed such a potent commander.

ਗਨ ਤੀਰ ਤੁਫੰਗ ਹਨੈਂ ਥਿਰ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਪੈਰ ਨ ਘਾਲਤਿ ਹੈਂ ਅਗਵਾਈ ॥੧੮॥

gan teer tufang hanain thir hvai kar pair na ghaalat hain agavaaee ||18||

Standing in one place they fired many arrows and guns towards the fort, but did not step foward even an inch. ||18||

ਖ੍ਵਾਜਾ ਦੁਰ੍ਯੋ ਲਖਿ ਕੈ ਗਤਿ ਤਾਂਹਿ ਹੁਇ ਗ਼ੈਰਤ ਖਾਨ ਕਰੀ ਚਪਲਾਈ ।

khvaajaa durayo lakh kai gat taanhi hue gairat khaan karee chapalaaee

Seeing Khwaja Mardood in hiding and the death of Nahar Khan,

ਕੋਟ ਦਿਵਾਰ ਕੋ ਆਵਨ ਲਾਗ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਜਹਿਂ ਨਾਹਰ ਖਾਂ ਅਗਵਾਈ ।

kott divaar ko aavan laag parayo jahin naahar khaan agavaaee

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਡੀਠ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਤਬਿਹੂੰ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਹੀ ਤੀਰ ਲੈ ਜੇਹ ਧਸਾਈ ।

shree gur ddeetth parayo tabihoon tatakaal hee teer lai jeh dhasaaee

ਐਂਚਤਿ ਛੋਰਿ ਦਯੋ ਸਰ ਘੋਰ ਗਯੋ ਅਰਿ ਓਰ ਦਯੋ ਉਥਲਾਈ ॥੧੯॥

ainchat chhor dayo sar ghor gayo ar or dayo uthalaaee ||19||

ਦ੍ਵੈ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਹਤੇ ਜਬਿ ਯੌਂ ਤਬਿ ਸਾਯੋ ਦਿਵਾਰ ਕੋ ਤ੍ਯਾਗਤਿ ਨਾਂਹੀ ।

dvai saradaar hate jab yauan tab saayo divaar ko tayaagat naanhee

Becoming cowards, they remain seated in the same position and were unable to re-enter the battlefield.

ਔਰ ਦਿਸ਼ਾ ਗਨ ਸ਼ੱਤ੍ਰੁ ਬਿਲੋਕਤਿ ਬਾਨਨ ਕੀ ਬਰਖਾ ਤਜਿ ਤਾਂਹੀ ।

Seeing many enemies in one place, Guru Ji showered a rain of arrows in that direction.

ਬੇਧਤਿ ਪੰਚਹਿਂ ਸਾਤ ਕਿ ਨੌ ਦਸ ਮਾਰ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਹੁਂ ਕੋ ਬਿਨਸਾਹੀਂ ॥੨੦॥

bedhat panchahin saat ki nau das maar hazaarahun ko binasaaheen ||20||

A single arrow would pierce five to seven and nine to ten enemies at once. ||20||

ਕੇਤਿਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਰੇ ਲਰਿ ਬਾਹਰ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਜੰਗ ਦਿਖਾਇ ਉਦਾਰੇ ।

ketik singh mare lar baahar zaahar jang dikhaae udaare

Many Singhs exited the fort and upon fighting a tremendous battle attained martyrdom.

ਕੇਤਿਕ ਅੰਤਰ ਬੀਰ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ਜੂਝਤਿ ਹੈਂ ਸਰ ਬਿੰ੍ਰਧਹਿ ਮਾਰੇ ।

Some Singhs were continuously fighting from inside the fort by firing many arrows.

ਛੋਰਤਿ ਗੋਰੀ ਲਗੈ ਰਿਪੁ ਓਰੀ ਸਰੀਰਨਿ ਫੋਰਿ ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂ ਪਰ ਡਾਰੇ ।

chhorat goree lagai rip oree sareeran for zimeen par ddaare

They fire bullets from their guns and rupture the enemies' bodies, making them fall dead.

ਹੇਲ ਕੋ ਪਾਵਤਿ ਆਵਿਤ ਧਾਵਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਗਵਾਵਤਿ ਪੁੰਜ ਜੁਝਾਰੇ ॥੨੧॥

hel ko paavat aavit dhaavat praan gavaavat punj jujhaare ||21||

Some warriors call attack; they come running to the fort but end up losing their lives. ||21||

ਦੇਖਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਉਮਰਾਵ ਕਹੈਂ ਸਭਿ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ਕਰੋ ਬਡ ਹੇਲਾ ।

dekh mile umaraav kahain sabh hee ik baar karo badd helaa

Seeing this some nobles begin to say, "Everyone should join together and attack at once.

ਕੂਦ ਪਰੋ ਗਡ ਅੰਤਰ ਸੰਮੁਖ ਲਾਖਨ ਕੋ ਕਿਮ ਊਪਰ ਝੇਲਾ ।

kood paro gadd antar samukh laakhan ko kim aoopar jhelaa

By pouncing they should enter the fort. How will they defend against an attack of thousands?

ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਗੁਰੂ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਜਹਿ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਓਜ ਭਲੋ ਅਬਿ ਬੇਲਾ ।

gobind singh guroo geh leejeh keejeh oj bhalo ab belaa

We must capture Guru Gobind Singh Ji, now is the best oppurtunity. Use all of your strength.

ਜੰਗ ਕੋ ਅੰਤ ਕਰੋ ਚਲਿ ਸ਼ਾਹੁ ਪੈ ਲੈ ਬਖਸ਼ੀਸ਼ ਕੋ ਹੂਜੈ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੨੨॥

jang ko ant karo chal shaahu pai lai bakhasheesh ko hoojai suhelaa ||22||

Finish the battle right here; capture Guru Ji and take them to the emperor." ||22||

ਯੌਂ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਘਿਰੇ ਬਹੁ ਬੋਲ ਪਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਹੇਲ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ ।

ਹੋਤਿ ਕੁਲਾਹਲ ਬੀਰ ਚਲਾਚਲ ਲਾਖੋਂ ਹਲਾ ਹਲ ਕੂਕ ਕਰਾਲਾ ।

hot kulaahal beer chalaachal laakhon halaa hal kook karaalaa

Causing great commotion they called a very large attack.

ਛੂਟਿ ਤੁਫੰਗ ਤੜਾਭੜ ਮਾਚਤਿ ਰਾਚਤਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਣ ਫਿਰੇ ਅਲਬਾਲਾ ।

Great clamour arose from all the warriors running;

ਘਾਇਲ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਿਰਿ ਭੂਮ ਪਰੇ ਤਰਫੈਂ ਤਨ ਲੋਟਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਕਾਲਾ ॥੨੩॥

ghaaeil hvai gir bhoom pare tarafain tan lottat praapat kaalaa ||23||

The frightening shrieks of the thousands of warriors resounded. ||23||

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਿਲੋਕਤਿ ਰੋਕਤਿ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੱਤ੍ਰੁਨਿ ਕੋ ।

ਬਾਨ ਸਮੂਹ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਤਿ ਹੈਂ ਵਧਿ ਆਗੇ ਜੁ ਆਵਤਿ ਦੈਂ ਹਨਿ ਕੋ ।

baan samooh prahaarat hain vadh aage ju aavat dain han ko

They fire heaps of arrows and kill any enemy which was approaching near.

ਲੋਥਨ ਪੋਥਨ ਢੇਰ ਗਏ ਲਗਿ ਊਪਰ ਨੀਚੇ ਪਰ ਤਨ ਕੋ ।

lothan pothan dter ge lag aoopar neeche par tan ko

There were piles of corpses upon corpses; bodies laid atop each other.

ਜ੍ਯੋਂ ਗਿਰ ਸ਼ਿੰ੍ਰੰਗ ਸ਼੍ਰਵੈ ਜਲ ਕੋ ਤਿਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਨ ਚਲ੍ਯੋ ਸ਼ਵ ਢੇਰਨਿ ਕੋ ॥੨੪॥

jayon gir shinrang shravai jal ko tim shron chalayo shav dteran ko ||24||

Blood flowed from the piles of corpses like water flows within valleys. ||24||

ਸਰੰ ਸੰਗ ਸੂਰੇ ।

saran sang soore

Upon firing many arrows,

ਕਰੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਦੂਰੇ ।

kare maar doore

Guru Ji sent the enemies to the second world.

ਥਿਰੇ ਓਟ ਲੈ ਕੈ ।

The enemies which were hiding against the walls,

ਮਹਾਂ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਖੈ ਕੈ ॥੨੫॥

mahaan traas khai kai ||25||

all embodied great fear. ||25||

ਨਹੀਂ ਓਤਸਾਹੇ ।

naheen otasaahe

They were no longer enthusiastic,

ਰਿਦੇ ਗਰਬ ਢਾਹੇ ।

ride garab dtaahe

and the ego of their minds had been destroyed.

ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ਅਸੰਭੈ ।

bichaaree asanbhai

The enemies cannot believe their sight,

ਮਹਾਨੈ ਅਚੰਭੈ ॥੨੬॥

mahaanai achanbhai ||26||

and remain very astonished. ||26||

ਹਜ਼ਾਰੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੈਂ ।

hazaaron prahaarain

Guru Ji killed thousands,

ਅੰਬਾਰੈਂ ਨਿਹਾਰੈਂ ।

anbaarain nihaarain

and piles of bodies could be seen everywhere.

ਲਰੈਂ ਬਾਰ ਥੋਰੀ ।

larain baar thoree

They would only occasionally fight,

ਮਚੀ ਮਾਰ ਘੋਰੀ ॥੨੭॥

machee maar ghoree ||27||

but they had caused great destruction. ||27||

ਰਿਪੂ ਬੀਚ ਚਾਲੀ ।

ripoo beech chaalee

There were only forty Singhs amidst the siege of the enemy;

ਛੁਧਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਹਾਲੀ ।

chhudhaa te bihaalee

who had been famished from not having eaten for months.

ਮਿਲੇ ਪਾਸ ਖ੍ਵਾਜੇ ।

mile paas khvaaje

Then, to meet Khwaja Mardood,

ਕਿਤੇ ਸੈਲ ਰਾਜੇ ॥੨੮॥

kite sail raaje ||28||

some Hill chiefs had arrived. ||28||

ਤਬੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਔਰੇ ।

At that time, more Singhs,

ਰਿਸੇ ਪੌਰ ਠੌਰੇ ।

rise pauar tthauare

stood near the gate embodying great rage.

ਚਲੇ ਬਾਜ ਦੌਰੇ ।

chale baaj dauare

Horses were galloping around,

ਭਏ ਸ਼ੱਤ੍ਰੁ ਹੌਰੇ ॥੨੯॥

bhe shatru hauare ||29||

and the enemies started to attack. ||29||

ਜਹਾਂ ਠੌਰ ਧਾਵੈਂ ।

jahaan tthauar dhaavain

Wherever the enemies would go,

ਤੁਫੰਗੈਂ ਚਲਾਵੈਂ ।

tufangain chalaavain

the Singhs would fire bullets at them.

ਕਿਲੇ ਕੋ ਤਕਾਵੈਂ ।

kile ko takaavain

They hope to approach the fort,

ਚਢੈਂ ਹਾਥ ਪਾਵੈਂ ॥੩੦॥

chadtain haath paavain ||30||

and try to climb up with their hands. ||30||

ਤਹਾਂ ਕੋ ਪਯਾਨੇ ।

tahaan ko payaane

They go towards the fort,

ਨਿਕਾਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨੇਂ ।

nikaaree kripaanen

unsheathe their swords,

ਬਨੇ ਸਾਵਧਾਨੇ ।

bane saavadhaane

embody alertness,

ਬਿਲੋਕੇ ਰਿਸਾਨੇ ॥੩੧॥

biloke risaane ||31||

and look with great rage. ||31||

ਪਰੇ ਬੀਰ ਧਾਈ ।

pare beer dhaaee

The Singhs charged and attacked,

ਨਹੀਂ ਸ਼ੰਕ ਪਾਈ ।

naheen shank paaee

without apprehension,

ਬਡੀ ਧੂਮ ਘਾਲੀ ।

baddee dhoom ghaalee

and sprawling immense smoke;

ਪਰੀ ਹਾਲ ਚਾਲੀ ॥੩੨॥

paree haal chaalee ||32||

great clamour ensued. ||32||

ਕਰਾਚੋਲ ਬਾਹੇ ।

karaachol baahe

They drew their swords,

ਕਟੇ ਅੰਗ ਲਾਹੇ ।

katte ang laahe

cutting the enemies' limbs.

ਤਤੰਕਾਲ ਡਿੱਗੇ ।

tatankaal ddige

The enemies immediately fall down,

ਘਨੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਣ ਭਿੱਗੇ ॥੩੩॥

ghane shron bhige ||33||

and are drenched in blood. ||33||

ਜਿਤੇ ਦੌਰਿ ਜਾਵੈਂ ।

jite dauar jaavain

Wherever the Singhs run,

ਤਿਤੇ ਭਾਗ ਧਾਵੈਂ ।

tite bhaag dhaavain

they call an attack.

ਅਰੈਂ ਅੱਗ੍ਰ ਨਾਂਹੀ ।

arain agr naanhee

They proceed forward without stopping;

ਮਿਲੇ ਪੀਠਜਾਂਹੀ ॥੩੪॥

mile peetthajaanhee ||34||

meeting with the Singhs, the Turks run away in fear. ||34||

ਲਿਏ ਸੇਲ ਭਾਲੇ ।

lie sel bhaale

They held spears and pikes,

ਹਨੈਂ ਆਨਿ ਜਾਲੇ ।

hanain aan jaale

and stabbed many enemies.

ਕਿਧੌਂ ਤਾਕਿ ਗੋਰੀ ।

kidhauan taak goree

The enemies aim their guns,

ਤਜੈਂ ਸਿੰਘ ਓਰੀ ॥੩੫॥

tajain singh oree ||35||

towards the Singhs. ||35||

ਰਹੈਂ ਦੂਰ ਠਾਢੇ ।

rahain door tthaadte

They remain standing far away,

ਨ ਹ੍ਵੈਂ ਤੀਰ ਗਾਢੇ ।

n hvain teer gaadte

instead of going near the Singhs.

ਮਹਾਂ ਤੇਜਵੰਤੇ ।

mahaan tejavante

They watch the glorious Singhs,

ਬਿਲੋਕੈਂ ਲਰੰਤੇ ॥੩੬॥

bilokain larante ||36||

fight amidst the battle. ||36||

ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਘਮਸਾਨ ਕਰਿ ਤਜਿ ਗਢ ਬਾਹਰ ਆਇ ।

eis prakaar ghamasaan kar taj gadt baahar aae

In this way, the Singhs exit the fort and fight a fierce battle.

ਲਰੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੈਂ ਤੁਰਕ ਗਨ ਮਰੈਂ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਣ ਥਾਇਂ ॥੩੭॥

larain prahaarain turak gan marain singh ran thaaein ||37||

Fighting in battle they kill countless enemies; then the Singhs themselves attain martyrdom in battle. ||37||

ਅਰਧ ਸਿੰਘ ਪਹੁਂਚੇ ਸੁਰਗ ਅਰਧ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੇ ਤੀਰ ।

Half the Singhs had departed for heavenly abode. The other half approach Guru Ji.

ਉਭੈ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਰਸ ਬੀਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਚਹੈਂ ਲਰਨ ਬਰ ਬੀਰ ॥੩੮॥

aubhai putr ras beer mahin chahain laran bar beer ||38||

The Guru's sons also remained drenched with Bir-Ras; they too wished to fight a fierce battle. ||38||
