The esteemed Satguru, omniscient and boundless, exemplifies immense patience and is aware of every act of devotion.

ਕਰਤਿ ਅਨੰਦ ਪੁਰਿ ਮਹਿਂ ਅਨਂਦ ਦਰਸਹਿਂ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਜਾਲ ॥੧॥

karat anand pur mahin anand darasahin darashan jaal ||1||

Within Anandpur, He radiates joy; the congregation feels immense contentment upon His divine sight. ||1||

ਸਹਿਜ ਸੁਭਾਇਕ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਬੱਗ੍ਯ ।

sahij subhaaeik gur sarabagay

With innate grace, the omniscient Guru sits,

ਸ਼ੋਭਤਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਹੁਤੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਤੱਗ੍ਯ ।

shobhat baitthe hute kritagay

resplendent in His aura, aware of all deeds.

ਈਖਦ ਸਿੱਖ ਪਾਸ ਪਰਵਾਰਤਿ ।

eekhad sikh paas paravaarat

A handful of Sikhs are present beside Him,

ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਚਾਮਰ ਬਰ ਢਾਰਤਿ ॥੨॥

chahoon or chaamar bar dtaarat ||2||

and from all sides, a whisk is gracefully swung over Him. ||2||

ਮਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਤਿ ਬੁੱਧਿ ਬਿਲੰਦ ।

mahaan prakaashat budh biland

[Guru Gobind Singh Ji] shines with unparalleled wisdom,

ਜਨ ਤਾਰਨਿ ਮਹਿਂ ਪੂਰਨ ਚੰਦ ।

jan taaran mahin pooran chand

standing out like the full moon amidst a sky full of stars.

ਪਦਮਪੱਤ੍ਰ ਸੀ ਆਂਖ ਬਿਸਾਲੀ ।

padamapatr see aankh bisaalee

Their eyes, expansive and radiant, resemble lotus leaves;

ਡੋਰੇ ਸਹਿਤ ਅੰਤ ਮਹਿਂ ਲਾਲੀ ॥੩॥

ddore sahit ant mahin laalee ||3||

the corners tinged with crimson, akin to the red-tipped edges [of a lotus leaf]. ||3||

ਤੀਛਨ ਹੈਂ ਕਟਾਖ੍ਯ ਬਡ ਈਛਨ ।

teechhan hain kattaakhay badd eechhan

His eyes are so sharp and enthralling,

ਚੰਚਲ ਜਨੁ ਖੰਜਨ ਦੇ ਸੀਛਨ ।

chanchal jan khanjan de seechhan

as if He instructs the wagtail bird on the allure of a captivating glance.

ਮਹਾਂ ਉਦਾਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਲੌ ਦੇਤਿ ।

mahaan udaar mukat lau det

With such a benevolent gaze, He grants profound liberation,

ਹੇਰਤਿ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਲੇਤਿ ॥੪॥

herat daasan dukh har let ||4||

looking upon His servants, He dispels all their sorrows. ||4||

ਕਿਤਿਕ ਕਾਲ ਜਬਿ ਬੈਹਿ ਬਿਤਾਯੋ ।

kitik kaal jab baihi bitaayo

For a while, Guru Ji remains seated,

ਲੇ ਇਕ ਰੀਛ ਕਲੰਦਰ ਆਯੋ ।

le ik reechh kalandar aayo

and then a bear-tamer approaches.

ਮਹਾਂਬਲੀ ਬਡ ਦੇਹ ਅਕਾਰਾ ।

mahaanbalee badd deh akaaraa

The bear he brings is immensely strong and enormous in stature,

ਕੈਧੌਂ ਜਾਮਵੰਤ ਦੇਹ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੫॥

kaidhauan jaamavant deh dhaaraa ||5||

it's as if Jāmbavanta, [the legendary king of bears from the Ramayana], has taken this form. ||5||

ਸਭਿ ਅੰਗਨਿ ਪਰ ਬਾਲ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ ।

sabh angan par baal bisaalaa

Every limb of this bear is covered in vast fur,

ਭੂਰ ਬਰਨ ਨਖ ਭੂਰ ਕਰਾਲਾ ।

bhoor baran nakh bhoor karaalaa

its hue is brownish, even the claws bear a deep shade of brown.

ਫੋਰਿ ਨਾਸਕਾ ਰੱਜੂ ਪਾਈ ।

for naasakaa rajoo paaee

Through its torn nose runs a nose ring.

ਚਰਮ ਕਲੰਦਰ ਤਨ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥੬॥

charam kalandar tan lapattaaee ||6||

The bear tamer is wrapped in a leather hide. ||6||

ਲਕੁਟੀ ਹਾਥ ਡਰਾਵਨਿ ਕਾਰਨ ।

lakuttee haath ddaraavan kaaran

To intimidate and control the bear, they have a stick in hand,

ਜਬਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਇ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਭਕਾਰਨ ।

jabeh dikhaae kareh bhabhakaaran

and when they show the bear the stick, it roars in response.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਿ ਅਗਾਰੀ ।

shree satigur kee drishatt agaaree

Before the esteemed gaze of the Satguru,

ਲਗ੍ਯੋ ਦਿਖਾਵਨਿ ਤਿਹ ਬਲ ਭਾਰੀ ॥੭॥

lagayo dikhaavan tih bal bhaaree ||7||

[the tamer] presents this mighty bear's strength. ||7||

ਕੁਸ਼ਤੀ ਲਗੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਬਲ ਧਰੇ ।

kushatee lage karan bal dhare

The bear tamer begins wrestling with the bear,

ਕਬਿ ਊਪਰ ਹੋਵਹਿਂ ਕਬਿ ਤਰੇ ।

kab aoopar hovahin kab tare

sometimes he gains the upper hand, at times he's on the defensive.

ਇਤ ਉਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਬੀਚ ਮੈਦਾਨ ।

eit ut firat beech maidaan

They move back and forth in the middle of the field,

ਬਡੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕੋ ਕਰਤਿ ਭਯਾਨ ॥੮॥

badde shabad ko karat bhayaan ||8||

the bear emits fearsome and loud cries. ||8||

ਦੁਹਿ ਪਗ ਪਰ ਭਾਲਕ ਹੁਇ ਖਰੋ ।

duhi pag par bhaalak hue kharo

The bear stands on its two hind legs,

ਆਪਸ ਬਿਖੈ ਅੰਕ ਲੈ ਭਰੋ ।

aapas bikhai ank lai bharo

and they engage in a close embrace.

ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਬਹੁ ਘੋਲ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ ।

eis prakaar bahu ghol dikhaayo

In this manner, they display their wrestling for some time,

ਸਿੱਖ੍ਯ ਬਿਲੋਕਤਿ ਕਹਤਿ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥੯॥

sikhay bilokat kehat sunaayo ||9||

and a Sikh, observing this, comments. ||9||

ਇਸ ਭਾਲਕ ਕੋ ਬਡੋ ਅਕਾਰਾ ।

eis bhaalak ko baddo akaaraa

“This bear is of such a large stature,

ਨਹਿਂ ਅਸ ਪੂਰਬ ਕਬਹਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਾ ।

nahin as poorab kabeh nihaaraa

I've never witnessed anything like this in my life before.”

ਚਮਰਦਾਰ ਕੀਰਤੀਆ ਨਾਮ ।

chamaradaar keerateea naam

There's a Sikh named Kiratia, the guard there,

ਠਾਂਢੋ ਚੌਰ ਕਰਤਿ ਅਭਿਰਾਮ ॥੧੦॥

tthaandto chauar karat abhiraam ||10||

who stands gracefully waving a whisk over the Guru's head. ||10||

ਖੋੜਸ ਬਰਸ ਆਰਬਲ ਜਾਂਹਿ ।

khorras baras aarabal jaanhi

He is sixteen years old

ਭਾਲਕ ਪਿਖਤਿ ਹਰਖ ਉਰ ਮਾਂਹਿ ।

bhaalak pikhat harakh ur maanhi

and watches the bear with immense joy.

ਕਹਤਿ ਭਯੋ ਦੀਰਘ ਇਸ ਦੇਹਿ ।

kehat bhayo deeragh is dehi

Kiratia exclaims, “Such a massive creature this bear is!

ਕਿਮ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਨਸਿ ਇਹ ਦੁਖ ਦੇਹ ॥੧੧॥

kim geh leenas ih dukh deh ||11||

How did You manage to capture this pain-inflicting beast? ||11||

ਕੋ ਅਘ ਕਰਿ ਐਸੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਈ ।

ko agh kar aisee gat hoee

What great sins did [the bear] commit to end up in this form?

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਿਨ ਲਖੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ।

shree satigur bin lakhai na koee

No one besides the Guru would know.”

ਸਭਿ ਸਿੱਖਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਸਾਗਰ ।

sabh sikhan mahin karunaa saagar

Then, the ocean of compassion, the Guru,

ਤਬਿ ਮੁਸਕਾਵਤਿ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ਉਜਾਗਰ ॥੧੨॥

tab musakaavat kehayo ujaagar ||12||

laughed and shed light on the matter, saying: ||12||

ਭੋ ਕੀਰਤੀਆ ਉਰ ਲਖਿ ਆਪ ।

bho keerateea ur lakh aap

“Oh Kiratia, realize in your heart,

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਜਨਮ ਮਹਿਂ ਇਹ ਤੁਵ ਬਾਪ ।

pratham janam mahin ih tuv baap

in his previous life, this bear was your father.

ਅਘ ਬਡ ਭਾਲਕ ਦੇਹ ਭਯੋ ਹੈ ।

agh badd bhaalak deh bhayo hai

He committed grave sins and thus became a bear.

ਗਹ੍ਯੋ ਇਨਹੁਂ ਕੇ ਬਸੀ ਥਿਯੋ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥

gehayo inahun ke basee thiyo hai ||13||

He was captured and brought to this state.” ||13||

ਕੀਰਤੀਆ ਸਮੇਤ ਸਿਖ ਤਹਾਂ ।

keerateea samet sikh tahaan

Sikhs, including Kiratia and others around,

ਮਾਨ੍ਯੋ ਸੁਨਤਿ ਅਚੰਭਾ ਮਹਾਂ ।

maanayo sunat achanbhaa mahaan

Who all hear this, are left in shock.

ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਿਨੈ ਸੁਨਾਈ ।

haath jor kar binai sunaaee

Kiratia clasps his hands together and speaks,

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਇਹ ਕਹਾਂ ਅਲਾਈ ॥੧੪॥

shree satigur ih kahaan alaaee ||14||

“Oh true Guru, what have you just said? ||14||

ਪਿਤਾ ਆਪ ਕੇ ਪਾਸ ਸਦੀਵ ।

pitaa aap ke paas sadeev

My father stayed continuously with You,

ਮਮ ਪਿਤ ਰਹ੍ਯੋ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਿ ਥੀਵ ।

mam pit rehayo sev kar theev

lived, performing devoted service by Your side.

ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰੰਤਾ ।

sangat kee aradaas karantaa

He was the one who performed the Ardaas for the congregation,

ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਦਿ ਹੁਇ ਸੋ ਬਰਤੰਤਾ ॥੧੫॥

jo prashaad hue so baratantaa ||15||

and distributed the Prashaad to them. ||15||

ਰਹਤਿ ਹਜ਼ੂਰ ਕਰਤਿ ਨਿਤ ਸੇਵਾ ।

rehat hazoor karat nit sevaa

He always stayed in the presence,

ਨੌਮੇ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਗੁਰਦੇਵਾ ।

nauame paatishaah guradevaa

of the ninth sovereign, Gurdev (Guru Tegh Bahadur).

ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਨਿ ਕੋ ਕਲ੍ਯਾਨਾ ।

karayo hazaaran ko kalayaanaa

Always serving the Guru, who was the savior for thousands,

ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਸੇਵਤਿ ਰਹ੍ਯੋ ਮਹਾਨਾ ॥੧੬॥

tin ko sevat rehayo mahaanaa ||16||

and in their company, he performed such profound service. ||16||

ਜੇ ਤਿਸ ਕੋ ਐਸੇ ਫਲ ਭਯੋ ।

je tis ko aise fal bhayo

If someone like him meets such a fate,

ਮਾਨੁਖ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਭਾਲਕ ਥਿਯੋ ।

maanukh tan te bhaalak thiyo

of being transformed from a man into a bear...

ਤਿਸ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਸਪੂਤ ਹੋ ਆਪ ।

tis gur ke sapoot ho aap

You are the offspring of that very Guru,

ਸੇਵਤਿ ਹੁਤੋ ਜਿਨਹੁਂ ਮਮ ਬਾਪ ॥੧੭॥

sevat huto jinahun mam baap ||17||

the Guru, whom my father served devotedly. ||17||

ਸੋ ਭਾਲਕ ਤਨ ਭਾ ਇਮ ਭਨ੍ਯੋ ।

so bhaalak tan bhaa im bhanayo

[And now], You're saying [my father] has taken the form of a bear?

ਮੁਝ ਕੋ ਬੰਦਰ ਚਹੀਯਤਿ ਬਨ੍ਯੋ ।

mujh ko bandar chaheeyat banayo

Then, for me... [should] I become a monkey?

ਰਾਵਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਫਲ ਐਸੇ ।

raavar kee sevaa fal aise

[If] this is the consequence of serving you,

ਮਾਨੁਖ ਲਖਹਿਂ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਤਬਿ ਕੈਸੇ ॥੧੮॥

maanukh lakhahin karahin tab kaise ||18||

then how, or why, would anyone perform service, understanding this fate? ||18||

ਉੱਤਮ ਪਦ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਲੌ ਜਾਇ ।

autam pad mukatee lau jaae

The highest state is to attain liberation!

ਚਾਹਤਿ ਨਰ ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੋਇ ।

chaahat nar so sevak hoe

And those people [who have that] desire, they become Your 'Sevaks', dedicated servants.

ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੁਇ ਫਲ ਬਿਪ੍ਰੀਤ ।

je praapat hue fal bipreet

But if one encounters such adverse outcomes,

ਨਹਿਂ ਸੇਵਹਿਂ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਡਰ ਚੀਤ ॥੧੯॥

nahin sevahin tum ko ddar cheet ||19||

out of fear, they might refrain from serving You. ||19||

ਸਿੱਖਨ ਗਨ ਤੇ ਆਸ਼੍ਰੇ ਅਹੋ ।

sikhan gan te aashre aho

You are the support of all Sikhs,

ਕੋ ਕਾਰਨ ਭਾ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕਹੋ ।

ko kaaran bhaa shree gur kaho

what's the reason for this? Oh Guru, please enlighten!

ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ ਨਾਮ ਇਸ ਕੇਰ ।

sikh guradaas naam is ker

He was a Sikh, named Gurdaas.

ਰਾਖਹੁ ਜਹਿਂ ਕਹਿਂ ਲਾਜ ਘਨੇਰ ॥੨੦॥

raakhahu jahin kahin laaj ghaner ||20||

You are known to protect the honour of your Sikhs, wherever, whenever. ||20||

ਯਾਂ ਤੇ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੁਨਾਵਹੁ ।

yaan te karunaa karahu sunaavahu

Hence, show compassion and explain this,

ਪੁਨਹਿਂ ਜੂਨਿ ਦੁਖ ਤੇ ਛੁਟਵਾਵਹੁ ।

punahin joon dukh te chhuttavaavahu

relieve my father from the suffering of this life and free him.

ਆਸ਼ੈ ਸਭਿ ਸਿੱਖਨ ਕੋ ਔਰ ਨ ।

aashai sabh sikhan ko aauar n

The Sikhs have hope and reliance solely on You,

ਤੁਮ ਬਿਨ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਯ ਪਾਇ ਕਿਤ ਠੌਰ ਨ ॥੨੧॥

tum bin shrey paae kit tthauar n ||21||

without You, there's nowhere else they can seek salvation.” ||21||

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਬਿ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਨਾਈ ।

shree satigur tab sarab sunaaee

[Hearing the words of the young Sikh, Kiratia], the True Guru explains everything:

ਤੋਹਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਇਮ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਈ ।

tohi pitaa im joonee paaee

“Your father ended up in this life because

ਪੰਚਾਂਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਆਯੋ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਾ ।

panchaamrit aayo gur paasaa

once prashad came to the Guru,

ਤੁਵ ਪਿਤ ਨੇ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਾ ॥੨੨॥

tuv pit ne kar kai aradaasaa ||22||

and he performed the ardaas... ||22||

ਬਰਤਾਵਨਿ ਲਗਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਾਂਹੀ ।

barataavan lag sangat maanhee

...while slowly distributing it amongst the congregation,

ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਦੇਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਹੀ ।

sane sane dete sabh paahee

handing it out gently to everyone present.

ਗੁੜ ਲਾਦੇ ਗਾਡੇ ਮਹਿਂ ਕੋਇ ।

gurr laade gaadde mahin koe

[Meanwhile], some Sikh was bringing gur (jaggery, traditional non-centrifugal cane sugar) in a cart,

ਤਹਿਂ ਮਾਰਗ ਆਯੋ ਚਲਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੨੩॥

tahin maarag aayo chal soe ||23||

and was coming down that path. ||23||

ਗੁਰ ਉਤਰੇ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਸਿਖ ਕਾਨ ।

gur utare sun kai sikh kaan

Upon hearing that the Guru present [in this city],

ਇਕ ਭੇਲੀ ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਜ ਪਾਨ ।

eik bhelee le kar nij paan

[the Sikh quickly] took a lump of the gur into his own hands.

ਧਰਿ ਆਗੈ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ।

dhar aagai darashan gur karayo

And placed it before Guru [Tegh Bahadur], when receiving Their darshan (divine glimpse).

ਨਮੋ ਕਰਤਿ ਅਵਨੀ ਸਿਰ ਧਰ੍ਯੋ ॥੨੪॥

namo karat avanee sir dharayo ||24||

Bowing down, placing his forehead on the ground. ||24||

ਪੁਨ ਉਠਿ ਚਲ੍ਯੋ ਸੰਭਾਰਨਿ ਗਾਡੇ ।

pun utth chalayo sanbhaaran gaadde

Then, he rose and went back to manage his cart,

ਮਾਰਗ ਚਲਿਤੇ ਆਇ ਜੁ ਛਾਡੇ ।

maarag chalite aae ju chhaadde

which he left on that busy road.

ਤੁਵ ਪਿਤ ਤਬਿ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਦ ਬਰਤਾਵੈ ।

tuv pit tab prashaad barataavai

Your father, at that time, was distributing prashad,

ਸੋ ਸਿਖ ਤਿਹ ਢਿਗ ਗਾ ਉਤਲਾਵੈ ॥੨੫॥

so sikh tih dtig gaa utalaavai ||25||

and that Sikh rushes towards your father. ||25||

ਧੂਰ ਪੰਥ ਕੀ ਜਿਸ ਪਰ ਪਰੀ ।

dhoor panth kee jis par paree

The path he was on was dusty,

ਬਦਨ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ ਧੂਸਰ ਸਭਿ ਕਰੀ ।

badan shamash dhoosar sabh karee

his entire body, even his beard, looked like it was covered in mud.

ਬਸਤ੍ਰਨਿ ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਰਜ ਛਾਈ ।

basatran par jis ke raj chhaaee

His clothes were smeared with dirt,

ਸਕਟ ਚੱਕ੍ਰ ਪਗ ਬ੍ਰਿਖਭ ਉਡਾਈ ॥੨੬॥

sakatt chakr pag brikhabh uddaaee ||26||

caused by the cart's wheels and the hooves of the bulls stirring up the dust. ||26||

ਤੋਹਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਚਨਿ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ।

tohi pitaa te jaachan karayo

Your father was approached [by that Sikh],

ਨਹੀਂ ਕਛੂ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਕਰ ਧਰ੍ਯੋ ।

naheen kachhoo tis ke kar dharayo

but, he did not offer any [prashaad] into his hands.

ਪੁਨਹਿਂ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਹੁਇ ਮਾਂਗ੍ਯੋ ਕੁਨਕਾ ।

punahin nikatt hue maangayo kunakaa

Then, coming closer, the Sikh pleaded for just a morsel.

ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਗਾਢੋ ਸਿਦਕ ਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਾ ॥੨੭॥

jis ke gaadto sidak su man kaa ||27||

[This was a Sikh] whose heart was filled with unwavering faith and devotion. ||27||

ਮੁਖ ਪਾਵਨ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਹੋਈ ।

mukh paavan te paavan hoee

By placing [the prashaad] in his mouth, he wanted to purify it.

ਉਤਕੰਠਤਿ ਯਾਂ ਤੇ ਬਹੁ ਸੋਈ ।

autakantthat yaan te bahu soee

He was quite anxious and in rush to do so.

ਤੁਵ ਪਿਤ ਨੇ ਕਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਘਨੇਰਾ ।

tuv pit ne kar krodh ghaneraa

But your father, consumed by intense anger,

ਝਿਰਕਨ ਕੀਨਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਤਿਸ ਬੇਰਾ ॥੨੮॥

jhirakan keen sikh tis beraa ||28||

was yelling at the Sikh at this point. ||28||

ਰੀਛ ਬੇਸ ਕਰਿਕੇ ਮਤਿ ਮੂੜ੍ਹਾ ।

reechh bes karike mat moorrhaa

[Saying to the devoted Sikh] — ‘You look like a giant bear, you fool!

ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਸਭਿ ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਹੋਤਿ ਅਰੂੜ੍ਹਾ ।

kayon sabh par toon hot aroorrhaa

Why are you coming close to all of us?

ਪਰੇ ਰਹੌ ਠਾਂਢੋ ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਆਵਹਿਂ ।

pare rahau tthaandto kayon aavahin

Stay still and stay away, why are you coming closer?

ਬਹੁ ਬੋਲਤਿ ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਰੌਰ ਮਚਾਵਹਿਂ ॥੨੯॥

bahu bolat kayon rauar machaavahin ||29||

Why do you keep asking over and over again, causing an uproar?’ — ||29||

ਇਮ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਸਿਖ ਹੁਇ ਮਨ ਭੰਗ ।

eim sun kai sikh hue man bhang

When that Sikh heard this, his spirit was shattered.

ਅਵਨੀ ਹੇਰਤਿ ਬ੍ਰੀੜਾ ਸੰਗ ।

avanee herat breerraa sang

He lowered his gaze, overwhelmed with shame.

ਲਘੁ ਕਨ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਉਠਾਯੋ ਛਿਤ ਤੇ ।

lagh kan parayo utthaayo chhit te

[Where he] spotted a small piece of prashad on the ground,

ਆਨਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਪਾਯੋ ਗੁਰ ਹਿਤ ਤੇ ॥੩੦॥

aanan mahin paayo gur hit te ||30||

and picked it up, cherishing it with devotion to the Guru. ||30||

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ।

vaahiguroo ko simaran kar kai

Remembering Waheguru, [he consumed the prashad],

ਤੁਵ ਪਿਤ ਕੋ ਦਿਯ ਸ੍ਰਾਪ ਉਚਰਿ ਕੈ ।

tuv pit ko diy sraap uchar kai

and then he pronounced a curse upon your father:

ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਕੋ ਲੇਸ਼ ਨ ਤੋਹਿ ।

gur sikhee ko lesh na tohi

‘You possess not a trace of Gursikhi in you,

ਅਬਹਿ ਸਰੀਰ ਰੀਛ ਕੋ ਹੋਹਿ ॥੩੧॥

abeh sareer reechh ko hohi ||31||

now, your form shall be that of a bear!’ ||31||

ਗਯੋ ਉਤਾਇਲ ਸਕਟੇ ਮਿਲ੍ਯੋ ।

gayo utaaeil sakatte milayo

In haste, [he quickly went] and joined his cart.

ਕਰੇ ਸਾਥ ਸੋ ਆਗੇ ਚਲ੍ਯੋ ।

kare saath so aage chalayo

Gathering his belongings, he then proceeded on his journey.

ਕੇਤਿਕ ਦਿਨ ਬੀਤੇ ਪਿਤ ਤੋਹਿ ।

ketik din beete pit tohi

A few days passed for your father,

ਬਯ ਪੂਰਨ ਤੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਸਿ ਹੋਹਿ ॥੩੨॥

bay pooran te mrit bas hohi ||32||

and then he met his end. ||32||

ਅਮੁਕੇ ਪਰਬਤ ਭਾਲਕ ਭਯੋ ।

amuke parabat bhaalak bhayo

[And so], in some distant mountain, he was reborn as a bear;

ਹੁਤੋ ਅਲਪ ਹੀ ਇਨ ਗਹਿ ਲਯੋ ।

huto alap hee in geh layo

still in his youth, a bear tamer ensnared him.

ਸਿਖ ਕੋ ਸ੍ਰਾਪ ਨਿਫਲ ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਜਾਏ ।

sikh ko sraap nifal kayon jaae

Why would the curse of a Sikh go unfulfilled

ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਟਿਕਾਏ‡ ॥੩੩॥

jin ke chit gur charan ttikaae ||33||

if their hearts are anchored on the Guru's lotus feet?” ||33||

ਸੁਨਤਿ ਅਚੰਭੋ ਮਾਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਸਭਿਹੂੰ ।

sunat achanbho maanayon sabhihoon

Hearing this narrative, everyone present is filled with shock and awe,

ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਤਿਹ ਸੁਤ ਕਹਿ ਤਬਿ ਹੂੰ ।

haath jor tih sut keh tab hoon

At that very moment, the son, [Kiratia], joins his hands and begins to speak:

ਰਾਵਰ ਭਨੀ ਬਾਤ ਸਭਿ ਨੀਕੀ ।

raavar bhanee baat sabh neekee

“You've recounted the entire tale in detail,

ਅਬਿ ਗਤਿ ਕਰੀਏ ਨਿਜ ਸਿਖ ਹੀ ਕੀ ॥੩੪॥

ab gat karee nij sikh hee kee ||34||

now, [please] grant salvation to [my father], who is indeed Your Sikh! ||34||

ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨੋ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ।

patit paavano naam tumaaraa

Your Name is the redeemer of the fallen,

ਦੋਸ਼ ਅਨੇਕ ਬਿਦਾਰਨਿ ਹਾਰਾ ।

dosh anek bidaaran haaraa

capable of dispelling countless sins and faults.

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਿ ਤੇ ਜੂਨ ਛੁਟਾਵੋ ।

kripaa drishatt te joon chhuttaavo

With Your compassionate gaze, free him from this life cycle,

ਅਬਿ ਉੱਤਮ ਗਤਿ ਕੋ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਵੋ ॥੩੫॥

ab utam gat ko pahunchaavo ||35||

and elevate him to the highest realm, that of liberation.” ||35||

ਤਬਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਸਿਖ ਭੇਜਾ ।

tab kripaal ne ik sikh bhejaa

At that point, the compassionate Guru sent a Sikh,

ਲੇਹੁ ਮੋਲ ਕੋ ਭਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਜਾ ।

lehu mol ko bhaalak de jaa

[instructing], “Go and offer a price to purchase the bear.”

ਸੁਨਤਿ ਕਲੰਦਰ ਨੇ ਤਬਿ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ।

sunat kalandar ne tab kehayo

Upon hearing this, the bear tamer responded,

ਇਹ ਸਮ ਰੀਛ ਅਪਰ ਨਹਿਂ ਲਹ੍ਯੋ ॥੩੬॥

eih sam reechh apar nahin lehayo ||36||

“No price will suffice for this particular bear. ||36||

ਇਸ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ਕਮਾਈ ਮੇਰੀ ।

eis ke saath kamaaee meree

With this [bear], I earn my living,

ਲੇਹੁਂ ਪੁਰਿਨਿ ਤੇ ਭਿੱਛ ਘਨੇਰੀ ।

lehun purin te bhichh ghaneree

traversing cities and receiving ample alms.

ਮੋਹਿ ਰਜਤਪਨ ਦੋ ਸੈ ਦੇਹੁ ।

mohi rajatapan do sai dehu

Grant me two hundred silver coins,

ਤੌ ਭਾਲਕ ਕੋ ਰਾਵਰ ਲੇਹੁ ॥੩੭॥

tau bhaalak ko raavar lehu ||37||

and then you can take this bear as yours.” ||37||

ਏਤੇ ਹੀ ਦਿਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਹੈਂ ।

ete hee dihu satigur kahain

“Give it to them,” the True Guru declares.

ਸੇਵਕ ਗਯੋ ਕੋਸ਼ ਜਹਿਂ ਅਹੈ ।

sevak gayo kosh jahin ahai

The servant goes to wherever the treasury is,

ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਗਯੋ ਦੇਨਿ ਤਿਸ ਪਾਹੀ ।

le kar gayo den tis paahee

and takes [the money] and gives it to them.

ਫਿਰ੍ਯੋ ਕਲੰਦਰ ਲੇ ਤਬਿ ਨਾਂਹੀ ॥੩੮॥

firayo kalandar le tab naanhee ||38||

[But], at that moment, the bear tamer backs out. ||38||

ਕਹਤਿ ਭਯੋ ਮੈ ਲੇਉਂ ਘਨੇਰੇ ।

kehat bhayo mai leaun ghanere

[The bear tamer says], “No, I want more money.”

ਹਟਿ ਸਿਖ ਭਾਖ੍ਯੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਗੇਰੇ ।

hatt sikh bhaakhayo guroo agere

The Sikh reports back, standing before the Guru,

ਨਹਿ ਅਬਿ ਲੇਤਿ ਕਹੈ ਕੁਛ ਔਰਾ ।

neh ab let kahai kuchh aauaraa

“He’s not accepting it now and is demanding more.

ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਮੋਲ ਨਹਿਂ ਮਾਨਹਿਂ ਬੌਰਾ ॥੩੯॥

karayo mol nahin maanahin bauaraa ||39||

He’s set a price, but now this fool doesn’t stand by it.” ||39||

ਤਬਿ ਗੁਰ ਭਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਲੇਹੁ ਤਿਸ ਛੀਨ ।

tab gur bhanayon lehu tis chheen

At that moment, Guru says, “Just seize the bear from him!”

ਸੁਨਿ ਸਿੱਖਨਿ ਉਠਿ ਤੈਸੇ ਕੀਨਿ ।

sun sikhan utth taise keen

Hearing this, the Sikhs rise and do exactly that.

ਆਨਿ ਹਜ਼ੂਰ ਖਰੋ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨਿ ।

aan hazoor kharo kar deen

They bring the bear before the Guru and secure it,

ਇਕ ਸਥਾਨ ਬੰਧਾਵਨ ਕੀਨਿ ॥੪੦॥

eik sathaan bandhaavan keen ||40||

And tie it up in one place. ||40||

ਦ੍ਯੋਸ ਬਿਤੀਤ੍ਯੋ ਜਾਮਨਿ ਛਾਵਾ ।

dayos biteetayo jaaman chhaavaa

The day ends and night falls.

ਭਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਤਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਫੁਰਮਾਵਾ ।

bhee praat satigur furamaavaa

In the early morning, the Guru gives a command,

ਸੌ ਕੋ ਪੰਚਾਂਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਰਿਵਾਵਹੁ ।

sau ko panchaamrit karivaavahu

“Prepare prashaad worth a hundred rupees,

ਸੁਚ ਸੋਂ ਸ਼ੀਘ੍ਰ ਕਰਹੁ ਲੈ ਆਵਹੁ ॥੪੧॥

such son sheeghr karahu lai aavahu ||41||

Ensure it [prepared with] purity and bring it to me quickly.” ||41||

ਰੁਚਿਰ ਬਨਾਯੋ ਆਨ੍ਯੋਂ ਪਾਸ ।

ruchir banaayo aanayon paas

They prepare the delicious prashaad and bring it forward.

ਖਰੇ ਹੋਇ ਕੀਨਸਿ ਅਰਦਾਸ ।

khare hoe keenas aradaas

Standing reverently, they recite the Ardaas.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਨਿਜ ਪਾਨ ।

shree satigur lai ke nij paan

The revered Satguru, with His own hand,

ਪੰਚਾਂਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਈਖਦ ਕਰਿ ਖਾਨ ॥੪੨॥

panchaamrit eekhad kar khaan ||42||

partakes a small portion of the prashaad. ||42||

ਸੀਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਰੀਛ ਕੋ ਦਯੋ ।

seet prasaad reechh ko dayo

Then, they give the remaining prashaad to the bear.

ਜਬਿ ਮੁਖ ਮਹਿਂ ਸੋ ਪਾਵਤਿ ਭਯੋ ।

jab mukh mahin so paavat bhayo

As soon as the prashaad enters its mouth,

ਗਯੋ ਉਦਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਤਤਛਿਨ ਮਰ੍ਯੋ ।

gayo udar mahin tatachhin marayo

and reaches its stomach, the bear instantly passes away.

ਸ੍ਰਾਪ ਪਾਪ ਸਭਿ ਹੀ ਪਰਹਰ੍ਯੋ ॥੪੩॥

sraap paap sabh hee paraharayo ||43||

The curse and sins are all dispelled. ||43||

ਉਤਮ ਗਤਿ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਵਾ ।

autam gat ko praapat hovaa

[And so, this being] achieves the highest state, liberation.

ਸਿੱਖਨ ਸਭਿਨਿ ਅਚੰਭੋ ਜੋਵਾ ।

sikhan sabhin achanbho jovaa

All the Sikhs observe this, astonished

ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਹਿ ਬਖਾਨਹਿਂ ।

dhan dhan satigureh bakhaanahin

They exclaim, “Blessed, blessed is the Guru of Truth!

ਅਪਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਨਹਿਂ ॥੪੪॥

apanee gat tum aape jaanahin ||44||

Only You know Your own state, Your position.” ||44||
