Chapter 22

Ratan Rai: In the Presence of the Guru

In the previous chapter, Ratan Rai, moved by the mystery of his unique birthmark, sought answers from his mother, the queen. She recounted their past struggles, how she and King Raja Ram longed for a child, their time and youth slipping away with no heir to continue their legacy. Her narrative, revealing the miraculous intervention of Guru Tegh Bahadur, filled Ratan Rai with an overwhelming sense of devotion and love.

This chapter follows Ratan Rai's journey, accompanied by his mother, ministers, and a retinue of guards, as they embark on a pilgrimage to Anandpur Sahib. Determined to express his gratitude and reverence, Ratan Rai brings with him an array of exquisite gifts for the Guru. These aren't ordinary offerings; they are the finest artifacts, handcrafted and commissioned from distant lands, showcasing the pinnacle of craftsmanship. Among them are war-ready elephants and horses, adorned with lavish jewels and ornate saddles, exemplifying royal splendour.

Upon arrival in Anandpur, Ratan Rai is profoundly moved by the presence of Guru Gobind Singh. His entourage showcases all of the gifts, including the beasts, jewels, and various shastars (weapons). The Guru is moved by the king's genuine high character and deep devotion.

Before departing back to the Assam, the Guru graciously bestows upon him the Charan Pahul (elixir of the feet) to Raja Ratan Rai — a significant spiritual honour.
