ਸ੍ਯਾਨੀ ਜਨਨੀ ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਕਛੁਕ ਬਾਹਨੀ ਸਾਥ ।

sayaanee jananee sang lai kachhuk baahanee saath

Accompanied by his sweet mother and a cohort of guards,

ਧਰਿ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੁਤ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਨਾਥ ॥੧॥

dhar sharadhaa maarag parayo nrip sut darashan naath ||1||

the prince sets forth on the path [to Anandpur] with great faith, seeking the divine glimpse of the Sovereign Lord (Guru Gobind Singh). ||1||

ਸ਼ੁਭ ਮਤਿ ਚਤੁਰ ਚੌਂਪ ਚਿਤ ਜਗੀ ।

shubh mat chatur chauanp chit jagee

In his heart, a beautiful thought persistently stirs

ਕਬਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸੋਂ ਪ੍ਰੀਤੀ ਲਗੀ ।

kab gur darason preetee lagee

— when will I behold the Guru, to whom my affection clings?

ਬੰਦਨ ਕਰਿ ਬੈਠੌਂ ਪਗ ਪਾਸ ।

bandan kar baitthauan pag paas

To prostrate at Their feet; I yearn to sit close.

ਸੁਨੌਂ ਕਬਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਬਾਕ ਬਿਲਾਸ ॥੨॥

sunauan kabeh gur baak bilaas ||2||

When might I hear the Guru's words of bliss? ||2||

ਸਾਰਦ ਚੰਦ ਬਦਨ ਕੀ ਓਰਾ ।

saarad chand badan kee oraa

...gazing upon Their moonlike visage...

ਲੋਚਨ ਕਰੌਂ ਚਕੋਰਨਿ ਜੋਰਾ ।

lochan karauan chakoran joraa

my eyes will fix upon Them [with the devotion] of a chakora bird [to the moon].

ਸ਼੍ਰਵਨ ਪੁਟਨ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਨੀਂ ।

shravan puttan te amrit baaneen

[When will] my ears be graced with Their ambrosial words?

ਪਾਨ ਕਰੌਂ ਮੈਂ ਅਤਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਨੀ ॥੩॥

paan karauan main at sukhadaanee ||3||

Imbibing them, a giver of immense peace — ||3||

ਚਿਤਵੈ ਬੈਠਤਿ ਉਠਤਿ ਚਲੰਤਾ ।

chitavai baitthat utthat chalantaa

Whether seated, rising, or on the move, his mind is incessantly absorbed [in those reflections].

ਸੁਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਮਹਿਮਾਂ ਉਰ ਹਰਖੰਤਾ ।

sun gur mahimaan ur harakhantaa

His heart swells with joy upon hearing of the Guru's glory.

ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਗਮਨਤਿ ਲਖਿ ਦੂਰ ।

sane sane gamanat lakh door

Gradually advancing, they cover the long distances.

ਨਿਜ ਦਲ ਨਰਨਿ ਦੇਤਿ ਸੁਖ ਭੂਰ ॥੪॥

nij dal naran det sukh bhoor ||4||

He ensures his entourage rests comfortably [along the way]. ||4||

ਜਨ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇਸ਼ ਕੋ ਮਿਲੇ ।

jan panjaab desh ko mile

Whenever he encounters someone from the land of Punjab,

ਗੁਰ ਸੁਧਿ ਤਿਸ ਕੌ ਬੂਝਤਿ ਭਲੇ ।

gur sudh tis kau boojhat bhale

he eagerly inquires for any news of the Guru.

ਥਿਤ ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰਿ ਨਗਰ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ।

thit anandapur nagar sunaavai

They inform him, “The Guru resides in the city of Anandpur.

ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦਰਸ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਹੁਂ ਆਵੈ ॥੫॥

sangat daras hazaarahun aavai ||5||

Congregations by the thousands come for His darshan.” ||5||

ਦਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਕੂਚ ਕਰਤਿ ਮਗ ਆਵਤਿ ।

din prat kooch karat mag aavat

With each passing day, they make haste along the path,

ਸਰਿਤਾ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਉਲੰਘਿ ਉਤਲਾਵਤਿ ।

saritaa brind ulangh utalaavat

traversing and fording numerous rivers.

ਪੁਨ ਗ੍ਰਾਮਨ ਕੌ ਪਿਖਿ ਪਿਖਿ ਛੋਰਾ ।

pun graaman kau pikh pikh chhoraa

Observing numerous villages in passing, they leave each behind,

ਚਲ੍ਯੋ ਆਇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਓਰਾ ॥੬॥

chalayo aae satiguroo kee oraa ||6||

[because he is] on the way to the Satguru! ||6||

ਸੁਰਸਰਿ ਤਰੀ ਉਲੰਘੀ ਜਮਨਾ ।

surasar taree ulanghee jamanaa

They cross the Sursari (Ganges River), then the Yamuna River,

ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਮੱਜਨ ਤ੍ਰਾਸਦ ਜਮ ਨਾ ।

jin ke majan traasad jam naa

[whose waters] are famed to dispel the fear of Yama (death).

ਚਲਤਿ ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰਾ ਨਿਯਾਰਯੋ ।

chalat anandapuraa niyaarayo

As he nears Anandpur,

ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਮਹੀਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਹਰਖਾਯੋ ॥੭॥

putr maheepat ko harakhaayo ||7||

the prince is filled with joy. ||7||

ਰਾਖੇ ਪੁਸ਼ਟ ਤੁਰੰਗਮ ਸਾਰੇ ।

raakhe pushatt turangam saare

Accompanied by all his robust horses,

ਤਿਮ ਕੁੰਚਰ ਭੀ ਤਨ ਬਲ ਭਾਰੇ ।

tim kunchar bhee tan bal bhaare

and the elephant, a behemoth of great strength,

ਸਾਥ ਅਸੂਦਾ ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਭਲੇ ।

saath asoodaa lashakar bhale

along with his contented and formidable troops,

ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਬਡ ਮਾਰਗ ਚਲੇ ॥੮॥

sane sane badd maarag chale ||8||

they advance slow, slowly along the lengthy route. ||8||

ਸਤੁੱਦ੍ਰਵ ਤੀਰ ਆਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਹੇਰਾ ।

satadrav teer aan kar heraa

Arriving at the bank of the Sutlej River, they gaze in wonder,

ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਤੁੰਗ ਕੋ ਸੈਲ ਬਡੇਰਾ ।

netr tung ko sail badderaa

spotting the towering Naina Devi Temple atop the grand mountain.

ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਿ ਪਿਖਿ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਥਾਨ ।

pahunche gur pur pikh shubh thaan

They reach the auspicious city of the Guru, taking in its splendid sights,

ਜਹਿਂ ਛਾਯਾ ਰਮਣੀਕ ਮਹਾਨ ॥੯॥

jahin chhaayaa ramaneek mahaan ||9||

where the serene and extensive shade captivates them. ||9||

ਸਿਵਰ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਤੰਬੂ ਲਗਵਾਏ ।

sivar karayo tanboo lagavaae

They settle and set up their tents,

ਸੁਧ ਹਿਤ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਨਰ ਤਬਹਿ ਪਠਾਏ ।

sudh hit shubh nar tabeh patthaae

[before the prince] dispatches a trustworthy individual to convey the news.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੌਰ ਜਨਾਇ ਬ੍ਰਿਤਾਂਤ ।

satigur pauar janaae britaant

[The individual] arrives at the Guru's quarters and explains:

ਦੇਸ਼ ਅਸਾਮ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਤਾਤ ॥੧੦॥

desh asaam nripat ko taat ||10||

“The son of the Assam king has just [arrived], right now! ||10||

ਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਸਿਖ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਹਿਤ ਆਯੋ ।

gur ko sikh darashan hit aayo

...He is a Sikh of the Guru who has come, seeking Their darshan,

ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਧਰੇ ਭਾਉ ਅਧਿਕਾਯੋ ।

sharadhaa dhare bhaau adhikaayo

arriving with immense love and faith.”

ਪੌਰਦਾਰ ਚਲਿ ਗਯੋ ਹਜ਼ੂਰ ।

pauaradaar chal gayo hazoor

The guard, upon hearing this, proceeds to [the Guru's] presence,

ਅਰਜ਼ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰੀ ਸਹਿਤ ਸ਼ਹੂਰ ॥੧੧॥

araz guzaaree sahit shahoor ||11||

respectfully presenting the request with discernment. ||11||

ਸੁਨਿ ਕਲਗ਼ੀਧਰ ਹੁਕਮ ਬਖਾਨਾ ।

sun kalageedhar hukam bakhaanaa

The Plume-Wearing Guru hears this and utters a command:

ਗੁਰ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਦਿਹੁ ਦੇਗ਼ ਮਹਾਨਾ ।

gur ghar te dihu deg mahaanaa

“From the Guru’s house, present him with generous offerings of food [from the langar],

ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਦਾਨਾ ਘ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਤਾ ਨਿਹਾਰੀ ।

trin daanaa ghrit sataa nihaaree

for the horses, provide grain and clarified butter in abundance,

ਦੇਹੁ ਤੁਰੰਗਮ ਜੇ ਗਜ ਭਾਰੀ ॥੧੨॥

dehu turangam je gaj bhaaree ||12||

and for the mighty elephants, ensure they are well-fed.” ||12||

ਆਇ ਮਸੰਦਨ ਕੋ ਤਿਨ ਕਹ੍ਯੋ ।

aae masandan ko tin kehayo

Once the command is issued the , the Masands immediately set out,

ਜਬਿ ਗੁਰ ਹੁਕਮ ਸਭਿਨਿ ਹੂੰ ਲਹ੍ਯੋ ।

jab gur hukam sabhin hoon lehayo

and upon receiving the Guru’s order, everyone [starts to] gather the necessary items.

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੁਤ ਨਿਕਟ ਮੇਵਰੇ ਗਏ ।

nrip sut nikatt mevare ge

The Mevra (a Sikh assistant who performs ardaas, also known as Ardaasia) approaches the prince,

ਜਥਾ ਜੋਗ ਹਿਤ ਖੈਬੇ ਦਏ ॥੧੩॥

jathaa jog hit khaibe de ||13||

offering the food and supplies in a fitting manner. ||13||

ਸਰਬ ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ਘਨੇਰਾ ।

sarab reet sukh paae ghaneraa

Engaging in all the customs, [the prince and his entourage] experience profound joy,

ਗੁਰਨਿ ਸਰਾਹਹਿ ਸਗਰੋ ਡੇਰਾ ।

guran saraaheh sagaro dderaa

as the camp resonates with everyone's praises of the Guru.

ਚਹੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਤਤਛਿਨ ਪਹੁਂਚਾਈ ।

chahee vasat tatachhin pahunchaaee

Whatever is needed is delivered without delay,

ਸੁਪਤਿ ਭਏ ਸੋ ਨਿਸਾ ਬਿਤਾਈ ॥੧੪॥

supat bhe so nisaa bitaaee ||14||

allowing a [peaceful] night's sleep! ||14||

ਸੌਚ ਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਠਾਨਿ ਸਵਧਾਨਾ ।

sauach shanaan tthaan savadhaanaa

In the morning, they wake up and perform their ablutions,

ਨ੍ਰਿਪਨੰਦਨ ਅਭਿਲਾਖ ਮਹਾਨਾ ।

nripanandan abhilaakh mahaanaa

the prince, with a profound longing in his heart,

ਪਠ੍ਯੋ ਮੁਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦ੍ਵਾਰੇ ।

patthayo musaahib satigur dvaare

sends an attendant to the Satguru's doorstep,

ਰਾਵਰਿ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਚਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਰੇ ॥੧੫॥

raavar darashan chaeh udaare ||15||

conveying [to the guard], “[The prince] earnestly seeks the Guru's darshan! ||15||

ਨੀਠ ਨੀਠ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਸਾ ਬਿਤਾਈ ।

neetth neetth kar nisaa bitaaee

He barely slept through the night,

ਮਿਲ੍ਯੋ ਚਹਤਿ ਹੌਂ ਪਰਿ ਸ਼ਰਨਾਈ ।

milayo chehat hauan par sharanaaee

with an unwavering desire to seek refuge in [the Guru's] sanctuary!”

ਸੁਧਿ ਕਲਗ਼ੀਧਰਿ ਢਿਗ ਪਹੁਂਚਾਈ ।

sudh kalageedhar dtig pahunchaaee

The news reaches the Plume-Wearing Guru, Guru Gobind Singh;

ਸੁਨਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਬਚ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ॥੧੬॥

sun shree mukh te bach furamaaee ||16||

Hearing [of the prince's devotion], They utter this message: ||16||

ਪਹਿਰ ਤੀਸਰੇ ਸਜਹਿਂ ਸੁਚੇਤਾ ।

pahir teesare sajahin suchetaa

“In the third pehar, [I will be] prepared and ready.

ਬੈਠੈਂ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੈਬੇ ਹੇਤਾ ।

baitthain darashan daibe hetaa

[In the court], I will seated to grant you My darshan.

ਮਿਲਹੁ ਆਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਪੁਰਹੁ ਭਿਲਾਖਾ ।

milahu aan kar purahu bhilaakhaa

Come, meet and fulfill your heartfelt desire!

ਸੁਧਰੈ ਜਨਮ ਭਾਉ ਅਸ ਰਾਖਾ ॥੧੭॥

sudharai janam bhaau as raakhaa ||17||

Your life will be fulfilled [if you do] this with great love.” ||17||

ਗਯੋ ਸਿਵਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ।

gayo sivar mahin nripat sunaayo

The ministers return and inform the prince of the Guru’s command,

ਹਰਖਤਿ ਮੁਖ ਪੰਕਜ ਬਿਕਸਾਯੋ ।

harakhat mukh pankaj bikasaayo

[Ratan Rai’s] face lights up with joy upon hearing this.

ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਹੁਕਮ ਹਾਥੀ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰਹੁ ।

karayo hukam haathee shingaarahu

He instructs, “Adorn the elephant splendidly,

ਜਲ ਤੇ ਮਲ ਕਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਨਿਕਾਰਹੁ ॥੧੮॥

jal te mal kar rang nikaarahu ||18||

water-rinse it's dirt thoroughly and embellish it with colors.” ||18||

ਜ਼ਰੀਦਾਰ ਬਰ ਮਖ਼ਮਲ ਝੂਲ ।

zareedaar bar makhamal jhool

[They place] a velvet mat [made of] gold threads,

ਲਗੇ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਜਾਂਬੂਨਦ ਫੂਲ ।

lage brind jaanboonad fool

[and attach] clusters of Jāmbūnad (golden ornaments of the Gods) flowers.

ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਝਾਲਰ ਝਲਕਤਿ ਜ਼ਰੀ ।

sir par jhaalar jhalakat zaree

On its head, tassels glimmer with gold,

ਕਿਤ ਕਿਤ ਲਰਕਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਨਿ ਲਰੀ ॥੧੯॥

kit kit larakat mukatan laree ||19||

strung with strings of pearls and diamonds. ||19||

ਉਘਰ੍ਯੋ ਭਾਲ ਸੁਪੈਦਾ ਭਲੇ ।

augharayo bhaal supaidaa bhale

Its face gleams with a bright, natural whiteness,

ਸ਼੍ਯਾਮ ਬਰਨ ਸਭਿ ਤਨ ਪਰ ਮਲੇ ।

shayaam baran sabh tan par male

while the rest of its body, dark in hue, is meticulously groomed.

ਜਸ ਕਦ ਤਸ ਹੀ ਦਸਨ ਸੁਹਾਏ ।

jas kad tas hee dasan suhaae

Matching its stature, its tusks appear magnificent,

ਹਾਟਕ ਚੂੜੇ ਰੂੜ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਏ ॥੨੦॥

haattak choorre roorr charrhaae ||20||

adorned with golden rings elegantly fitted. ||20||

ਚਾਂਦੀ ਕੇ ਸਿੰਖਲ ਘਰਿਵਾਏ ।

chaandee ke sinkhal gharivaae

[Ratan Rai commissioned] elegant silver chains for its legs,

ਚਾਰ ਪਗਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਰਹੇ ਸੁਹਾਏ ।

chaar pagan mahin rahe suhaae

which gleam impressively on each of its four feet.

ਤਿਮ ਹੀ ਕਰੇ ਤੁਰੰਗਮ ਤ੍ਯਾਰੇ ।

tim hee kare turangam tayaare

In a similar manner, they prepare the horses,

ਜਰੇ ਜ਼ੀਨ ਜਾਂਬੂਨਦ ਡਾਰੇ ॥੨੧॥

jare zeen jaanboonad ddaare ||21||

outfitting them with saddles adorned with gold and precious stones. ||21||

ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੰਚਕਲ ਚੌਂਕੀ ਚਾਰੂ ।

shasatr panchakal chauankee chaaroo

The Panchkala Shaster and the royal seat are prepared,

ਜਾਮ ਕਟੋਰਾ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਦੁਤਿ ਵਾਰੂ ।

jaam kattoraa shubh dut vaaroo

accompanied by ornate goblets, resplendent in their design.

ਕੰਕਨ ਕੰਚਨ ਬੱਜ੍ਰ ਜਰਾਏ ।

kankan kanchan bajr jaraae

Golden bracelets, embedded with diamonds, are readied,

ਬਹੁ ਬਨਾਵ ਕੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਨਾਏ ॥੨੨॥

bahu banaav ke basatr banaae ||22||

along with a variety of exquisitely fashioned garments. ||22||

ਤ੍ਯਾਰ ਕਰੀ ਇੱਤ੍ਯਾਦਿ ਅਕੋਰ ।

tayaar karee itayaad akor

Everything is meticulously prepared,

ਅਰਪਨਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਹਿਤ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ।

arapan shree gur hit kar jor

to offer these to the revered Guru.

ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਭੂਖਨ ਮੋਲ ਘਨੇਰੇ ।

basatr bibhookhan mol ghanere

A plethora of costly garments and ornaments are gathered,

ਪਹਿਰਨਿ ਤਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਿਸ ਬੇਰੇ ॥੨੩॥

pahiran tan satigur tis bere ||23||

to be adorned by the Satguru at this time. ||23||

ਸਚਿਵ ਸੈਨ ਸਭਿਹੂੰ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਬਨੇ ।

sachiv sain sabhihoon shubh bane

[Ratan Rai's] ministers and soldiers all dress in splendid attire,

ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਰਿ ਜੇ ਮੁਲ ਘਨੇ ।

basatr shasatr dhar je mul ghane

adorned with garments and weapons of considerable worth.

ਇਮ ਤ੍ਯਾਰੀ ਕਰਿਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਰੀਤਿ ।

eim tayaaree karite sabh reet

With such meticulous preparations completed,

ਤੀਨ ਪਹਿਰ ਗ੍ਯੋ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਬੀਤ ॥੨੪॥

teen pahir gayo baasur beet ||24||

three pehars (approximately nine hours) elapse. ||24||

ਤਿਸ ਛਿਨ ਆਇ ਮੇਵਰਾ ਗਯੋ ।

tis chhin aae mevaraa gayo

At that moment, a mevra [from the Guru’s court] arrives,

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਸਾਥ ਭਾਖਤੋ ਭਯੋ ।

bhoopat saath bhaakhato bhayo

informing the king and his company:

ਸਭਾ ਬਿਖੈ ਭਾ ਗੁਰ ਆਗਵਨੂੰ ।

sabhaa bikhai bhaa gur aagavanoo

“The Guru’s assembly is prepared,

ਸਿਖ ਉਡਗਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਸਸਿ ਗੁਨ ਭਵਨੂੰ ॥੨੫॥

sikh uddagan mahin sas gun bhavanoo ||25||

with Sikhs gathered, akin to stars around the moon. ||25||

ਬੈਠੇ ਪਾਵਨਿ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਹੇਤੁ ।

baitthe paavan darashan het

[Guru Gobind Singh] is seated, ready to bestow darshan,

ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਕਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਲੇਤਿ ।

sangat sakal manorath let

fulfilling the desires of all present in the congregation.”

ਰਤਨਰਾਇ ਸੁਨਿ ਹਰਖਤਿ ਭਯੋ ।

ratanaraae sun harakhat bhayo

Upon hearing this, Ratan Rai is filled with immense joy,

ਲੇ ਸਭਿ ਚਲਹੁ ਹੁਕਮ ਕਰਿ ਦਯੋ ॥੨੬॥

le sabh chalahu hukam kar dayo ||26||

and commands enthusiastically, “Let us all proceed.” ||26||

ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਭੂਖਨ ਗਨ ਦੀਨਾਰ ।

basatr bibhookhan gan deenaar

Garments and delicacies, along with gold coins,

ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਗਮਨੇ ਭਰਿ ਭਰਿ ਥਾਰ ।

le kar gamane bhar bhar thaar

are stacked on trays and carried forward

ਅਪਰ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਭਿ ਕਰੇ ਅਗਾਰੀ ।

apar vasat sabh kare agaaree

Other items are taken forward

ਨਗਨ ਪਗਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਚਲ੍ਯੋ ਪਿਛਾਰੀ ॥੨੭॥

nagan pagan nrip chalayo pichhaaree ||27||

while the barefooted king fllows [closely] behind! ||27||

ਸਚਿਵ ਸੁਭਟ ਨਿਜ ਸਾਥ ਮਿਲਾਏ ।

sachiv subhatt nij saath milaae

Accompanied by his members,

ਗਮਨੇ ਮਾਨਵ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਸਮੁਦਾਏ ।

gamane maanav hvai samudaae

they proceed as a unified group.

ਪੌਰ ਸਭਾ ਕੋ ਤਹਿਂ ਚਲਿ ਆਯੋ ।

pauar sabhaa ko tahin chal aayo

They arrive at the Guru's assembly,

ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਯੋ ॥੨੮॥

haath jor kar sees nivaayo ||28||

ਅੰਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਸਿਰ ਕਰਿ ਨੀਵਾ ।

antar pravishe sir kar neevaa

Entering, [Ratan Rai] lowers his head,

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਹਿ ਭਾਵ ਅਤੀਵਾ ।

vaahiguroo keh bhaav ateevaa

and utters “Waheguru” with profound devotion.

ਪਿਖੀ ਦੂਰ ਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ।

pikhee door te gur kee moorat

From a distance, they behold the Guru's form,

ਬੈਠੇ ਮਨਹੁਂ ਚੰਦ ਕੀ ਸੂਰਤ ॥੨੯॥

baitthe manahun chand kee soorat ||29||

seated majestically, like the full moon in splendor. ||29||

ਝੂਲਤਿ ਕਲਗ਼ੀ ਦਮਕਤਿ ਮੋਤੀ ।

jhoolat kalagee damakat motee

His plume quivers, adorned with gleaming pearls,

ਜਿਗਾ ਬਂਧੀ ਹੀਰਨ ਦੁਤਿ ਹੋਤੀ ।

jigaa bandhee heeran dut hotee

and his turban sparkles with diamonds and gems.

ਚਮਰ ਢੁਰਤਿ ਹੈ ਬਾਰੰਬਾਰੀ ।

chamar dturat hai baaranbaaree

Chaurs (whisks) are waved continuously above Him,

ਥਿਰੇ ਸੁਹਾਵਤਿ ਸਭਾ ਮਝਾਰੀ ॥੩੦॥

thire suhaavat sabhaa majhaaree ||30||

enhancing the court's already magnificent atmosphere. ||30||

ਜਨੁ ਦੇਵਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਬਿਸ਼ਨੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ।

jan devan mahin bishan kripaalaa

The Guru, akin to Vishnu among the gods, [radiates in the assembly];

ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਮਹਾਨ ਉਜਾਲਾ ।

gayaan nidhaan mahaan ujaalaa

a treasure of knowledge and enlightenment.

ਤੂਰਨ ਕਰਤਿ ਪਰ੍ਯੋ ਪਗ ਜਾਈ ।

tooran karat parayo pag jaaee

The king rushes to the Guru's feet and bows,

ਸਕਹਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁਨ ਸੀਸ ਉਠਾਈ ॥੩੧॥

sakeh naheen pun sees utthaaee ||31||

and is unable to lift his head. ||31||

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਿ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਲੋਕਾ ।

kripaa drishatt te guroo bilokaa

The Guru, with Their compassionate gaze, speaks [to the king],

ਉਠਹੁ ਭੂਪ ਸੁਧਰੇ ਜੁਗ ਲੋਕਾ ।

autthahu bhoop sudhare jug lokaa

“Rise, O King! Your worldly bonds are now severed.

ਮਾਨਿ ਬਾਕ ਕੋ ਸੀਸ ਉਠਾਯੋ ।

maan baak ko sees utthaayo

Acknowledging the Guru's words, the king raises his head,

ਬੈਠ੍ਯੋ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਧਾਯੋ ॥੩੨॥

baitthayo sanamukh prem vadhaayo ||32||

sitting before the Guru, his love and respect deepening. ||32||

ਕੁਸ਼ਲ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀਨੋ ।

kushal prashan shree satigur keeno

The Guru inquires about Ratan Rai's well-being,

ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਤਿਨ ਸਭਿ ਕਹਿ ਦੀਨੋ ।

haath jor tin sabh keh deeno

to which Ratan Rai, with hands joined, responds gratefully.

ਤਬਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਬਖਾਨਾ ।

tab mantree kar jor bakhaanaa

Then, the minister, folding his hands, speaks up:

ਬਡੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਹੁਂਚੇ ਤਿਸ ਥਾਨਾ ॥੩੩॥

badde guroo pahunche tis thaanaa ||33||

“The elder Guru (Guru Tegh Bahadur) visited our city… ||33||

ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮ ਮਿਲ੍ਯੋ ਮਹਿਪਾਲਾ ।

raajaa raam milayo mahipaalaa

The king, Raja Ram, met [with Guru Tegh Bahadur],

ਕੀਨਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਇਮ ਤਿਸ ਕਾਲਾ ।

keen benatee im tis kaalaa

presenting a plea [born of deep despair] at that time,

ਜਤਨ ਕਰੇ ਉਪਜ੍ਯੋ ਨਹਿਂ ਬਾਲਿਕ ।

jatan kare upajayo nahin baalik

lamenting that, despite [relentless and anguished] efforts, no child had been born,

ਬਖਸ਼ਹੁ ਆਪ ਰਾਜ ਕੋ ਮਾਲਿਕ ॥੩੪॥

bakhashahu aap raaj ko maalik ||34||

until the Guru, [recognizing their plight], blessed them and and decreed the child to be the ruler. ||34||

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਹਰ ਲਗਾਈ ।

kripaa karee gur muhar lagaaee

The merciful Guru blessed [Raja Ram] and imprinted a stamp on them,

ਦਯੋ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਇਹ ਬਜੀ ਵਧਾਈ ।

dayo putr ih bajee vadhaaee

[declaring] the birth of a son, an occasion of immense joy!

ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹਤਿ ਸਿਰ ਇਸ ਕੇਰਾ ।

tis te chinhat sir is keraa

That very mark distinctly adorns [the child's] forehead now,

ਦਰਪਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਦੇਖ੍ਯੋ ਜਿਸ ਬੇਰਾ ॥੩੫॥

darapan mahin dekhayo jis beraa ||35||

visible like a seal in a mirror ||35||

ਸਭਿ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਜਨਨੀ ਤੇ ਸੁਨ੍ਯੋਂ ।

sabh prasang jananee te sunayon

[Raja Ratan Rai] learned the entire narrative from the queen mother,

ਅਨਂਦ ਉਪਾਇ ਆਵਨੋ ਭਨ੍ਯੋ ।

anand upaae aavano bhanayo

filled with bliss, he ordered [everyone] to come [pay visits to the Guru].

ਪੁਨਹਿ ਉਪਾਇਨ ਕੀਨਿ ਜਨਾਵਨਿ ।

puneh upaaein keen janaavan

Subsequently, they presented a detailed account of the gifts,

ਪ੍ਰਥਕ ਪ੍ਰਥਕ ਸਭਿ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਬਤਾਵਨਿ ॥੩੬॥

prathak prathak sabh karayo bataavan ||36||

meticulously describing each item and its uniqueness. ||36||

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਮਤੰਗ ਅਜਬ ਦਿਖਰਾਯੋ ।

pratham matang ajab dikharaayo

First, they showcase the unique elephant,

ਜਿਹ ਸਮ ਦੁਤੀ ਨ ਜਗ ਮਹਿਂ ਜਾਯੋ ।

jih sam dutee na jag mahin jaayo

remarkable for its small size, unparalleled in the world.

ਪੰਚ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਅਗਾਰੀ ਕਰੇ ।

panch turang agaaree kare

Next, they present five horses,

ਕੰਚਨ ਜ਼ੀਨ ਜਿਨਹੁਂ ਪਰ ਪਰੇ ॥੩੭॥

kanchan zeen jinahun par pare ||37||

each splendidly adorned with golden saddles. ||37||

ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਭੂਖਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਘਨੇਰੇ ।

shasatr bibhookhan basatr ghanere

A variety of weapons, garments, and other precious ornaments are next presented.

ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਅਗੇਰੇ ।

shasatr dhare satiguroo agere

The weapons are placed before the Guru of Truth.

ਦੇਖਤਿ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਬਿਸਾਲ ਦਈ ਹੈ ।

dekhat khushee bisaal dee hai

Observing these [finely crafted blades] brings Guru Gobind Singh immense joy,

ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਭਈ ਹੈ ॥੩੮॥

sukh praapat aradaas bhee hai ||38||

leading to an Ardaas (supplication) [by the Mevra], invoking well-being and contentment [for the Assam king]. ||38||

ਭਯੋ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਕੌ ਲੇਯ ।

bhayo nihaal khushee kau ley

Ratan Rai is in a state of bliss, overwhelmed with joy,

ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੇਖਤਿ ਅਨਂਦ ਧਰੇਯ ।

darashan dekhat anand dharey

[especially] after receiving the darshan of the Guru.

ਬਹੁ ਅਸਾਮ ਦੇਸ਼ਨ ਕੀ ਗਾਥਾ ।

bahu asaam deshan kee gaathaa

[Guru Gobind Singh inquires] about the tales of the Assam region,

ਬੂਝਤਿ ਰਤਨ ਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਸਾਥਾ ॥੩੯॥

boojhat ratan raae ke saathaa ||39||

to which Ratan Rai responds accordingly. ||39||

ਸਚਿਵਨ ਸਹਿਤ ਬਖਾਨਹਿਂ ਤੈਸੇ ।

sachivan sahit bakhaanahin taise

Accompanied by their secretaries, they begin to describe everything in detail,

ਕਲਗ਼ੀਧਰ ਕੇ ਰੁਖ਼ ਹੁਇ ਜੈਸੇ ।

kalageedhar ke rukh hue jaise

as they stand before the Plume-Wearing Guru.

ਦੇਸ਼ ਰੁ ਅਪਨੋ ਸਰਬ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੰਤ ।

desh ru apano sarab britant

Describing their homeland and its many stories,

ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ਸੁਨਾਵਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੪੦॥

karayo sunaavan gur bhagavant ||40||

unfolding every detail [to] the revered Guru. ||40||

ਖਟ ਘਟਕਾ ਲਗਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਰਹੇ ।

khatt ghattakaa lag baitthe rahe

Seated closely for about two hours,

ਰਤਨ ਰਾਇ ਅਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਦ ਲਹੇ ।

ratan raae ar gur mud lahe

Ratan Rai and the Guru engage in pleasant conversations.

ਗਜ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਬਰਨਨ ਬਹੁ ਕਰੇ ।

gaj ke gun baranan bahu kare

They elaborate on the elephant’s numerous skills and capabilities:

ਸੀਛਤਿ ਬਡੋ ਕਹਿਨ ਅਨੁਸਰੇ ॥੪੧॥

seechhat baddo kahin anusare ||41||

“The elephant’s are well-trained and responsive to your command. ||41||

ਜਿਮ ਚਾਹਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜੀ ਕਰਿਵਾਵਹੁ ।

jim chaahahu prabh jee karivaavahu

As you wish, my Lord, command the elephant,” they suggest.

ਨਿਤ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਪਰਖਹੁ ਹਰਖਾਵਹੁ ।

nit dekhahu parakhahu harakhaavahu

“You may joyfully observe and test it daily, [assessing its skills].

ਪੰਚਕਲਾ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ ।

panchakalaa ih shasatr bisaalaa

This is the formidable Panchkala weapon,

ਕਰਹਿ ਕਾਜ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਰਣ ਕਾਲਾ ॥੪੨॥

kareh kaaj bahute ran kaalaa ||42||

capable of performing numerous feats during combat. ||42||

ਬਰਛੀ ਜਮਧਰ ਖੜਗ ਤਮਾਂਚਾ ।

barachhee jamadhar kharrag tamaanchaa

[It transforms into a] ਬਰਛੀ (spear), ਜਮਧਰ (jamdhar/kataar), ਖੜਗ (sword), and a ਤਮਾਂਚ (pistol),

ਚਹੌ ਸੁ ਕਰੋ ਰੋਸ ਰਣ ਰਾਚਾ ।

chahau su karo ros ran raachaa

adaptable for any form of combat you desire against the enemy.

ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨ ਹਤਹੁ ਦਾਵ ਜਸ ਹੋਇ ।

dushaman hatahu daav jas hoe

Each strike ensures the enemies are decisively defeated,

ਇਸ ਤੇ ਬਚਿ ਕੈ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੪੩॥

eis te bach kai jaae na koe ||43||

leaving no adversary capable of withstanding its force. ||43||

ਇਹ ਚੌਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਜਬ ਬਿਸਾਲੀ ।

eih chauakee prabh ajab bisaalee

This stool is uniquely crafted, my Lord,

ਸਭਿ ਕੀ ਸੈਲ ਕੀਜੀਅਹਿ ਕਾਲੀ ।

sabh kee sail keejeeeh kaalee

please test its capabilities tomorrow, if You will.

ਬਡੇ ਜਤਨ ਤੇ ਵਸਤੁ ਮੰਗਾਈ ।

badde jatan te vasat mangaaee

Much effort and expense went into its commissioning,

ਮੁਖ ਮਾਂਗ੍ਯੋ ਦਿਯੋ ਮੋਲ ਪਠਾਈ ॥੪੪॥

mukh maangayo diyo mol patthaaee ||44||

and the requested price for it was duly paid. ||44||

ਦੂਰ ਦੂਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਆਛੀ ।

door door te sun sun aachhee

[The items] were precisely chosen and sent from distant lands,

ਹੇਤੁ ਆਪ ਕੇ ਅਰਪਨਿ ਬਾਛੀ ।

het aap ke arapan baachhee

with the intent to present them to You.

ਸਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਮੈਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਘਰ ਕੋ ।

sadaa daas main satigur ghar ko

I aspire to be a lifelong servant of the house of the Satguru,

ਸਿੱਖੀ ਬਖਸ਼ਹੁ ਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਬਰ ਕੋ ॥੪੫॥

sikhee bakhashahu de kar bar ko ||45||

[Please] bless me with the boon of Sikhi! ||45||

ਸੁਨਤਿ ਮਹਾਤਮ ਉਪਜ੍ਯੋ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ।

sunat mahaatam upajayo prem

Enthralled by Your greatness, love arose within me,

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਦਾਤਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਰ ਛੇਮ ।

shree gur daataa de gur chhem

O Supreme Giving Guru, I seek khēm (liberation) from Your gracious self.

ਅਪਨੋ ਜਾਨਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਪਕਰੀਜੈ ।

apano jaan bhujaa pakareejai

Embrace me as Your own, guiding me with Your hand,

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਕੀ ਪਾਹੁਲ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪੬॥

charan kamal kee paahul deejai ||46||

and confer upon me the Charan Pahul (elixir of the Guru's feet).” ||46||

ਬਿਨਤੀ ਸੁਨਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪੂਰੇ ।

binatee sunat prasan prabh poore

The Guru, pleased by Ratan Rai's heartfelt request,

ਆਨੀ ਲਖੀ ਉਪਾਇਨ ਰੂਰੇ ।

aanee lakhee upaaein roore

recognizes the depth and sincerity of his offerings.

ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਹੇਰਿ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਬਹੁ ਕਰੀ ।

premee her khushee bahu karee

Moved by his devotion and love,

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕੀ ਅਪਦਾ ਹੇਰੀ ॥੪੭॥

janam maran kee apadaa heree ||47||

[the Guru dispels his karmic burdens] liberating him from the cycle of birth and death. ||47||

ਬੰਦਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਤਬਿ ਗਯੋ ।

bandan kar raajaa tab gayo

Following this, Ratan Rai, the king, bows and takes his leave,

ਪਿਖਿ ਸੁਸ਼ੀਲ ਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਹਰਖਯੋ ।

pikh susheel gur ko harakhayo

his heart uplifted by the Guru's kindness and compassion.

ਹਯ ਗਯ ਸੌਂਪੇ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਪਾਸ ।

hay gay sauanpe daasan paas

He assigns the care of the animals to his servants,

ਖੈਬੇ ਦੇਹੁ ਨਿਹਾਰੀ ਘਾਸ ॥੪੮॥

khaibe dehu nihaaree ghaas ||48||

instructing, “Ensure they are fed grass and properly nourished!” ||48||
